Parts

Exclusive recolours

It's little wonder that the majority of the exclusive recolours are lime.

  • 4 x Slope Curved 3 x 1 x 2/3 in Lime (6561718 | 7302)
  • 4 x Plate 1 x 1 x 2/3 with Open Stud in Lime (6561722 | 86996)
  • 2 x Slope 18° 2 x 1 x 2/3 in  Lime (6561723 | 5404)
  • 1 x Slope Curved 2 x 2 with Stud Notch in Lime Left (6561719 | 5095) and Right (6561720 | 5093)
  • 2 x Bracket 1 x 2 - 2 x 6 in Lime (6561725 | 6970)
  • 2 x Sports Ski 6L in Black (6561717 | 28922)

Decorated parts

No stickers here – a first for the LEGO Speed Champions theme. Instead, the conservative number of decorations are achieved with prints:

Black

  • 1 x Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Silver 'SRT' print (6554263 | 114262)
  • 1 x Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Silver 'DODGE' print (6548228 | 113635)
  • 1 x Plate Special 1 x 3 with 2 Studs with Groove and Inside Stud Holder (Jumper) with Silver Dodge print (6548225 | 113632)

Lime Green

  • 1 x Slope Curved 2 x 2 x 2/3 with Silver Graffiti print Left (6548226 | 113633) and Right (6548227 | 113634)
I find the 1x3 jumper the most exciting of the bunch because it's the first time we've seen a 1-plate high element with groove receive a print. Other sets in this wave feature similar 'groovy prints' as well, but we'll get to those in due course.

Rare parts

Each appears in 1 other set, some not seen for some time:

  • 1 x Bracket 2 x 4 - 1 x 4 in Black (6491823 | 5175) – Found in 1 other set, 60420 Yellow Construction Excavator which is retiring soon
  • 4 x Panel 1 x 1 x 1 Corner in Lime (6561721 | 6231) – Last seen in 41327 Mia's Bedroom from 2018
  • 1 x Bracket 1 x 2 - 1 x 4 [Rounded Corners at Bottom, Square Corners at Top] in Lime (6561724 | 28802) – Last seen in 70838 Queen Watevra's 'So-Not-Evil' Space Palace from 2019
  • 4 x Wheel Rim 24 x 13.4 with Black Slick Tyre in Black (6458183 | 105162) – Note that this is the unprinted version, also found in 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8 Race Cars (retiring soon) but appears numerous times with print in LEGO Speed Champions F1 car sets.

Techniques

The largest standard brick in the set is a singular 1x2. Those familiar with LEGO Speed Champions sets will know the model is, therefore, dense with small elements, arranged in mind-boggling ways.

Minifigure skis are surprisingly common in LEGO Speed Champion sets. Usually they're buried deep in the tail of an F1 car to capture some aerodynamic nubbin but here they're buried even deeper just to fill some tiny gaps either side of the printed "DODGE" double cheese slope. Only the back edge of each ski is visible once the model is complete.

Also note the 1x2 panels that partially obscure some trans-red grill tiles, an ingenuous solution for the tail lights.

Nearby is this nifty sub-assembly that is mirrored on each side of the car. With just a few parts, it:
  • Covers the studs of the wheel arches using a pair of opposed 1x1 panels
  • Positions a cheese slope and a 1x2 curved slope to form the C pillar
  • Maintains the unusual height offset the rear of the car has.

Moving forward, we find yet more satisfying sub-assemblies. The seats and rear window clip onto bars embedded in just the right spots to leave no gaps once the model is complete.

A similar technique is used to fix the dashboard and steering column.

The front of the car has so much going on, it is tough to distinguish where one technique ends and another begins. Highlights include:
  • Headlights made with transparent 1x1 horizontal clips
  • The printed 1x3 jumper plate angled downwards to capture the subtle taper of the bonnet
  • 1x1 vertical clips offset laterally with inkwells to hold the 2x2 square road signs above

Minifigure

Oh right, there's a driver too!

I feel a bit sorry for this guy, he's wearing his best (and exclusive) torso with on-brand prints front and back (6562792) but all anyone talks about is how awesome his car is to build - he isn't even shown on the box art!

Completed set

All those intricate techniques come together to create.. a lime green oblong on wheels. Okay, that's putting it far too bluntly, but the unassuming end result does feel at odds with the rich build we just experienced.

A slight snag accuracy-wise is the 6-wide windscreen feeling too narrow for the 8-wide car. It's a shortcoming shared by many LEGO Speed Champions sets but the plainer-than-usual exterior unfortunately exacerbates the issue here.

Nevertheless, it remains a fine LEGO version of the real-life car. Any potential gap or exposed stud has been meticulously minimised, and the sprinkling of prints add visual interest.

The tail-lights, rear window and bonnet are prime examples of areas that appear simple but actually required some serious engineering. Each is just so deceptively clean once the model is complete.

I plan to keep the set separate from my collection for a while just to repeat the build experience a few more times – assuming I can refrain from cherry-picking its offering of many new and useful parts that is!
