LEGO® Ghost Effect with Bar (part 5500)

Posted by Tom Loftus
Today we're playing catch-up with a quick look at the geometry and connection points of an element introduced in 2024: Design Element No.8 (5500), also known as Power Burst, Energy Claw Section Rounded with Bar End and 3 Bar Handles on BrickLink and Ghost Effect with Bar on Rebrickable.

Despite appearing on our best parts of 2024 list, we've yet to actually analyse this ghoulish element in all its ethereal glory, but now that it is available on LEGO Pick a Brick in 2 colours, its time has come.

Originally introduced for the LEGO® NINJAGO® theme, the element now appears in two colours: Trans-Red (6512330) and Trans-Dark Pink (6501313). The latter is still exclusive to LEGO® Marvel 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion where it's used to depict Gambit’s signature magenta powers. For more on that set and its parts, see Thomas' review of set 76294.

The ghost effect has just 4 legal connection points: 3 splayed bars at the wider end, and a single exposed bar at the tip – which, despite being hollow, is not compatible with accessories.

A modified 1 x 2 plate with angled handles (92692) looks to be a match for the trio of bars. However, the alignment is slightly different: note the orange clips on the modified plate don’t sit perfectly corner-to-corner like the medium azure ones do on the ghost effect element.

It’s safe to assume the overall arc is 90° but it’s tough to discern the exact distance from one end to the other because the connection points are so far apart, and so permit a tiny degree of flex. Our best guess is 5.5 modules (shown above left) with the tip of the ghost effect aligned above the orange jumper plate.

The Power Burst Energy Claw element attached at both ends to connected lego pieces. On a 2x4 plate, in one corner is a clip tile attached to one of the handles of the Power Burst Energy Claw. At the other corner is a stack of 1x1 pieces, topped by a snot brick with the bar end of the Power Burst Energy Claw inserted into the hollow of its side stud. The snot brick is positioned upon the height of 11 plates from the 2x4 plate.

However, that little bit of wriggle room does allow for some wacky configurations, like the one above.

Matching the element’s curve to other parts is very satisfying. It curves over a 1 x 3 x 2 arch brick (6005, 92903), and below a 1 x 6 x 3 ⅓ arch (6060, 30935), very nicely.

A few of the cut-outs can (illegally) accept a 3.18mm bar. Since they’re not intended for connection points, the clutch is temperamental, but sufficient for supporting light-weight builds like this two piece jellyfish:

  1. It's a shame Trans. Neon Green isn't still around for this to come in... this'd go great with the various ghost effect accessories from Hidden Side.

This part has only ever been used in sets as a minifig accessory, but some of the pictures here have me thinking of the potential to use multiples as a sort of energy cage.

  2. How has Friends not changed this color to trans-blue and made it part of a fountain?
