LEGO® VIDIYO Review: 43113 K-Pawp Concert & 43114 Punk Pirate Ship

Posted by Admin

Caz Mockett (@cazmockett) continues our LEGO® VIDIYO analysis today with a rundown on sets 43113 K-Pawp Concert & 43114 Punk Pirate Ship. Products in this article were provided by LEGO; the author's opinions are their own.

In this review I am exploring two of the larger sets in the LEGO® VIDIYO buildable stages range. The K-Pawp Concert retails for £44.99 / US$49.99 / €49.99 and contains 514 pieces, while the Pirate Ship costs £59.99 / US$59.99 / €69.99 with 615 pieces.

New Moulds and Recolours in 43113 K-Pawp Concert

The first set gives us an exclusive new mould for the flying unicorn’s wings:

  • 1x Minifig Neckwear, Wings, Angel in Transparent with Opalescence/Satin Trans-Clear (6336756 | 77183) - unique to this set with a lovely pearly sheen

And it also offers us three new recoloured pieces:

  • 4x Slope 45° 2 x 1 with 2/3 Cutout [New Version] in Aqua/Light Aqua (6344198 | 15672) - found exclusively here
  • 3x Plate 1 x 4 in Vibrant Coral/Coral (6258095 | 3710) - new for 2021, and only in a handful of other sets, 41445 Vet Clinic Ambulance, 41936 Pencil Holder and 43114 Punk Pirate Ship
  • 8x Tile 1 x 4 with Groove in Coral (6258570 | 2431) - again new for 2021, additionally appearing in 41446 Heartlake City Vet Clinic with just one example

Printed Pieces including new VIDIYO BeatBits

We are treated to seven printed elements in the set:

  • 1x 2 x 4 tile in Black with two minifigs scene (6347437 | 87079) - in 2 other of the current VIDIYO wave, 43112 Robo HipHop Car and 43115 The Boombox
  • 1x Tile Round 2 x 2 with Bottom Stud Holder with Record with Azure Shooting Star Print in Medium Lilac/Dark Purple (6333994 | 76330) - previously seen just once in 43106 Unicorn DJ BeatBox
  • 1x Musical Instrument Guitar Electric 'ML' Type with Pick Guard and Silver Strings and Knobs, Grey Decorations Print in Black (6346057) - in this set, Robo HipHop Car and The Boombox

As well as a small selection from the random pool of BeatBits which appear in many other sets, the three exclusive character BeatBits which are included here are:

  • 1x Tile 2 x 2 with VIDIYO print (43113-1) in Bright Reddish Violet/Magenta (6341642)
  • 1x Tile 2 x 2 with VIDIYO print (43113-1) in Black (6341644)
  • 1x Tile 2 x 2 with VIDIYO print (43113-1) in Bright Yellow/Yellow (6341643)

Rare & Returning Elements in 43113 K-Pawp Concert

I have covered the first three elements shown here in my full review of BeatBoxes, which you can read for more info, but a summary is below:

  • 2 x Hinge Plate 4 x 6 with Two 1 x 4 Studs and Recessed 2 x 4 Middle in Light Aqua (6317534 | 65133) - also in Unicorn DJ and Candy Mermaid DJ BeatBoxes from March 2021
  • 1 x Hinge Bracket 4 x 5 x 5 Locking with 2 Fingers, Two on Each Side, 7 Teeth in Bright Bluish Green/Dark Turquoise (6317525 | 65132) - also seen in Unicorn DJ and 43110  Folk Fairy BeatBoxes
  • 1x Plate Rounded Corners 8 x 8 (6317513 | 65140) - the only other occurrence is in Unicorn DJ BeatBox

The other elements are rarely seen, as follows:

  • 8x Plate Round 1 x 1 with Solid Stud in Bright Light Yellow (6319958 | 6141) - previously seen in just three sets, 31200 The Sith, 60281 Fire Rescue Helicopter and 41671 Andrea's Swimming Cube
  • 2x Slope 30° 1 x 1 x 2/3 (Cheese Slope) - Light Aqua (6176737 | 54200) - debuted in a small number of CARS releases in 2011, and was in a handful of Mixels in 2015, but hasn't been seen since then; it gets a new Element ID this time around
  • 2 x Plate Special 1 x 1 with Clip Horizontal [Thick Open O Clip] in Medium Lavender (6347299 | 52738) - made its only other appearance and debut as a recolour in 10278 Police Station
  • 2x Brick 1 x 2 x 5 without Side Supports in Trans-Dark Pink (6252586 | 46212) - previously seen in 4 sets from 2019 with a different EID (6252586) but I suspect the change for this set is due to possibly using the new transparent ABS plastic rather than the older polycarbonate material
  • 2x Brick Round, Half 1 x 2 in Medium Azure (6308034 | 68013) - only in 1 set previously, 70434 Supernatural Race Car, but it also now occurs additionally in 43111, 43112 and 43114 from this VIDIYO release wave
  • 2x Dish 3 x 3 Inverted [Radar] in Dark Turquoise (6333162 | 43898) - previously just in 3 sets, 70820 Movie Maker, Sweet Mayhem's Systar Starship! make and take model from 2019 and 71746 Jungle Dragon, now also in the Punk Pirate Ship

Minifigures in 43113 K-Pawp Concert

Once again, the colourful VIDIYO characters included in the set have wonderful unique printed elements and a nice selection of new moulds and recolours.

Kitten Keytarist:

  • 1x Minifig Head Special, Cat with White Hair, Gold Decorations, White Face print in Bright Purple/Dark Pink (6338695) - the same new mould as seen in The Boombox but a new, unique colour combination here
  • 1x Torso, Jacket with Bright Light Yellow/Dark Turquoise Trim, Pendant, Coral/Dark Pink Shirt with Dark Turquoise Arms, Dark Pink Hands in Dark Purple (6347538)
  • 1x Minifig Hipwear Tail Raccoon / Cat / Fox Costume [Plain] in Dark Pink (6347649 | 18277) - unique to this minifigure in this colour
  • 1x Legs and Hips, Dark Turquoise Belt, Gold/Magenta Stripes print in Black (6338661)

Flying Unicorn Singer:

  • 1x Minifig Head Special, Unicorn with Gold Horn, Dark Purple Mane, Dark Turquoise/Coral Lightning Bolt Print in Medium Lavender (6338694 | 70751) - a recolour/print of the Unicorn DJ BeatBox figure head (6331245)
  • The wings are mentioned in the New Moulds section above
  • 1x Torso, Dark Purple/Coral/Gold Jacket print Medium Lavender Arms and Hands in Dark Turquoise (6352079) - really lovely graphics and printing quality
  • 1x Minifig Hipwear Tail Unicorn Costume [Plain] in Dark Purple (6331790 | 18832)
  • 1x Legs and Hips, Dark Turquoise/Gold/Coral Decorations print in Dark Purple (6338659)

Bunny Guitarist:

  • 1x Minifig Head Special, Bunny Dancer, Dark Pink Nose, Dark Turquoise Hair Print in Light Aqua (6338693), a recolour and reprint of the new head mould from 43101-11 Bunny Dancer Series 1 Bandmate
  • 1x Torso, Jacket, Dark Turquoise Trim, Lavender Shirt print with Coral Arms, Light Aqua Hands in Coral (6344244) - the whole torso and arms now available in Coral for the first time
  • 1x Legs and Hips, Black Belt, Silver Diamond, Dark Turquoise Stripes, Coral Toes print in Dark Purple (6338657)

This rear view shows what the new head moulds, tails and wings look like, but they do obscure the back torso printing a little bit.

Removing the Kitten’s head and Unicorn’s wings reveals the printing on their backs, which is just as precise as the front sides.

K-Pawp Concert - The Build

I really love the colours and design of this set. The build itself is pretty straightforward, with just a little bit of SNOT required for the revolving speaker stacks at either side of the main stage in the middle. The characters have complimentary colours to the overall stage design which really gives the whole thing a sense of cohesion. With seven stage positions here, and only three minifigures, there is plenty of room for co-opting some of your other Band Mates into the act, or moving the original trio around for more interactive play.

Backstage, the band members can relax with a drink or partake in a game of dance-karaoke to get their adrenaline pumping before heading out to entertain the crowds out front. The head on top can rotate to either display the kitten or the unicorn, and the speaker stacks each side can also show a different pattern, which may provide more unique experiences within the app, but I have not tested this aspect of the set.

As we have seen from other VIDIYO sets, there are no stickers at all and all the graphics are printed onto their elements with care and attention to detail.

This Pirate Ship contains three unique re-coloured elements:

  • 2x Brick Curved 1 x 2 x 1 No Studs in Black (6275732 | 37352) - another element where I was surprised it did not previously exist in this colour for this mould

We have just one new mould:

  • 1x Musical Instrument Guitar, Anchor, with Dark Azure Strings and Coral Lightning Bolt Print in Medium Stone Grey/Light Bluish Gray (6331793 | 75649) - which appears in 43103 Punk Pirate BeatBox from the March 2021 releases, although this was not covered in depth at the time

Minifigures in 43114 Punk Pirate Ship

Once again we have three really nice designs for the minifigures, all with an aquatic theme. Their colourful costumes are printed with high spec patterns front and back for the torsos, and on the front for the legs, all of which are unique to this set. Two of the figures also feature arm prints.

Mermaid Violinist:

  • 1x MINI WIG, NO. 325 in Coral (6336757 | 77184) - a wonderful new mould which also appears in Pearl Gold (6347610) in Robo HipHop Car
  • 1x Minifig Head Dark Turquoise Lips, Coral Eye Shadow, Smirk print in Yellow (6338667)
  • 1x Torso, Jacket, White Shirt with Dark Turquoise Shark, Tattoos print with Yellow Arms and Hands in Black (6347697)
  • 1x Tail, Mermaid Curved Right with Coral/Medium Azure Sash, Safety Pin, Chain Print in Dark Turquoise (6338698 | 75648) - the same shape as first appeared in the Candy Mermaid BeatBox, but in a new colour here and with different printing

Squid Drummer:

  • 1 x Minifig Head Special Squid with Dark Turquoise Skull, Dots print in Magenta (6338697) - made with a more pliable rubbery plastic than regular bricks, I love this new mould!
  • 1 x Torso, Jacket, White Shirt with Coral Curse Words, Silver Trim print with Magenta Arms and Hands in Black (6350708) - for those with an interest in assembling monochrome minifigures, the magenta hands are quite rare
  • 1 x Legs and Hips, Dark Turquoise/Coral Plaid, Safety Pins, Belt print in Black (6338666)

Shark Guitarist:

  • 1 x Minifig Head Special, Shark with Dark Turquoise Stripes, Open Mouth with Teeth, Tongue, Yellow Spiked Fin Print in Black (6338696) -  a recolour of the same mould from 43101 Shark Singer Bandmate
  • 1 x Torso, Jacket with Gold Trim, White Shirt, Handkerchief, Anchor on Chain print in Dark Turquoise (6347786)
  • 1 x Legs and Hips, Coral/Black Belt, Safety Pin, Chain, Silver Shoes, Patches print in Earth Blue/Dark Blue (6347787)

This rear view shows what each of their unique head pieces looks like from the back.

And with those removed, we get a better look at the printing on the rear of each torso.

Punk Pirate Ship - The Build

The ship has a very low profile to the water level but I like the sweeping curves in Dark Turquoise which help outline the boughs and sides of the vessel. Six different mini stage positions are available for you to pose your minifigures, with three of these able to rotate. The mast is decorated with two iconic heads, one a shark bearing its pointy teeth and the other side is a skull. These were built with SNOT techniques and were probably the most complicated part of the build process, although aligning and clicking in the bent arms holding up the ladders in the rigging was also a bit fiddly.

Behind the scenes, the ship features a galley of sorts, containing some food and drink and a chest for treasure. The two hinged side panels open wide giving better access for play activities. As with the K-Pawp stage, the main speaker stacks and the head icons rotate into two different positions to give you alternate effects within the app, should you choose to use it. I feel the rear section of the mast is a little bit bland here, and the lime green surfboard is really jarring as it doesn’t match the rest of the ship’s distinctive colour scheme.

Conclusion

The K-Pawp Concert contains a trio of vibrant characters who have an appealing stage on which to perform. The overall colours are well coordinated with some interesting shapes and angles to the final build. Printing quality is top-notch, as we have come to expect with the VIDIYO lineup. I feel the set is reasonably good value for money, for what you get once the whole thing is built, even without taking the interactive AR elements in the app into consideration. Of all the current buildable stages, this would have been top of my personal shopping list, if I had not been lucky enough to receive a copy to review.

Personally I find the Punk Pirate Ship to be a little less interesting than the K-Pawp stage, but I do like the minifigures with their aquatic theme and excellent graphics. The set provides AFOLs with some interesting new pieces for MOC purposes, and the ship could lend itself quite well to modification into a wreck or sea-going ship for any watery diorama.

In a future article, I will be adapting both of these sets, along with the largest of the wave, The Boombox, so you will have to wait until that is published to see what I made with the pieces.

  1. I'm just a casual fan of this theme but these stage sets are so cool! The aesthetics and subject matter are so distinctive despite having to integrate similar sorts of app features across the various sets. I love that despite the sets mostly being meant to view from one angle (as you'd expect from a stage), they all feature various sorts of "backstage" areas to keep things interesting from all sides. And of course, the minifigures are top-notch—that new squid head in particular looks amazing!
