A hundred years after his death, LEGO® Architecture are celebrating the extraordinary, visionary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. His masterwork, the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, has been under construction in Barcelona on and off for over 140 years. It finally received its tower this year, crowning it the tallest religious building in the world.
That's not its only record: it has now inspired the LEGO set with the biggest piece count in the world!

It's somehow appropriate this set is so big, as Gaudí's vision was audacious; he knew it would never be completed in his lifetime, and a great many people thought it never would. Without the invention of computers, that would likely have been the case. Although the exterior structure is now complete, the whole project is not due for completion until 2034.
This Catholic temple follows the basilica floor plan symbolising the Latin-cross, with 5 naves and a three-sided transept. It has a fascinating construction history, and the LEGO build process follows that.
This image shows the first three sections of the model, and shows what was achieved between 1882 and 1977.
Despite vandalism of his workshop models and the burning of crucial plans in the Civil War in 1936, construction resumed under the guidance and reinterpretations of a series of architects and sculptors. The dramatic Passion façade was created in the 1950s, which Gaudí said should be “harsh and cruel, as if made of bones” (lower part of the lefthand section).
Next comes what was built over the forty years from 1978 to 2018, which was primarily focused on the naves, columns, vaults, transepts, crossing and apse.
One of the two sacristies (see below, the smaller domes on the left) was also completed at the end of this period.
The final stage, from 2019 until now, represents an astonishing amount of construction compared to what had come before. The sacristies were completed, as was the Glory façade shown above far right, with the final 4 bell towers above it completing the 12 bell towers representing the Apostles. Finally the 2 massive towers were added – one over the apse dedicated to the Virgin Mary and one to dedicated to Christ the Saviour positioned over the crossing – pausing construction for about 6 months during the pandemic.
The completed model (here showing the Passion and the Glory façades) measures over 24 in. (62cm) high, 18.5 in. (47 cm) wide, and 15 in. (39 cm) deep. The real thing is 172.5m high, so you would need to stack 278 of these LEGO versions to reach the top of the original.
The Glory façade which is the most recent to be completed, and the Christ the Saviour tower rising above the other 17 towers.
View showing the original Nativity façade, the rounded apse in the more traditional neo-Gothic style, and the two circular sacristies in the corners.
Here's a birds-eye view! Now let's fly inside like an irritating pigeon.
With the segments detachable, you can appreciate the lavish colourful interiors as well. This is a view down the main nave to the apse.
It looks like we will get several large transparent colours of plate to bring the incredible stained glass to life.

Absolutely gorgeous! Definitely way outside my budget but if they're going to make a set this big, I'm glad they chose a subject that really needs that kind of size to do all the details justice.
ReplyDeleteOne new recolour that deserves attention:
ReplyDeleteTrans-Clear 5-point Crystals! It's hard to believe that this piece has never been produced in Trans-Clear until now. Now we just need Trans-Yellow!
