LEGO® Minifigures 71051 Series 28 fully embraces the joy of animal costumes. There are 12 different ones to collect, adding to the host of minifigures dressed as animals from previous years. Since this is a theme-based collection, I imagine it will be a "Marmite" series: love it or hate it, depending on whether minifigure costumes are your thing or not!

Accessories
New moulds and fabrics
Flotation ring with bar handle (7649)
- Flotation ring with bar handle in White and Trans Dark Pink (6563236 | 7649)

The smaller bar area is a typical 3.18mm bar in size, compatible with minifigure hands and any clip. The rest of the ring is 5mm, the size of a LEGO® Technic pin or a LEGO stud, and so it's a perfect fit for a LEGO Technic figure hand, or a spanner (4006).
The flotation ring fits into the ever-growing family of rings with bars. Some examples are shown above. Like the chakram (35485), the flotation ring only has a single section of 3.18mm bar but the rest is 5mm in diameter. The most recent example 3x3 Ring (7610) is not shown here but Tom will cover this new element in detail this week, in his upcoming article analysing new moulds in LEGO® Botanicals sets 11501 Tulip Bouquet and 11509 Flowering Cactus.
Parrot Tails (6578668)
.jpeg)
There are two new fabric elements that come in a single small box with element ID 6578668. The blue is larger than the red so that they sit together as the staggered tail feather of the parrot.

Is the monkey tail new? I could have sworn I had that from some monkie kid sets.
ReplyDeleteAh apologies you are correct. It is a recolour in Reddish Brown
DeleteNice review!
ReplyDeleteThe molded flotation ring seems like a nice piece. I doubt it will fully replace the classic life ring piece, but I do think it might very effectively replace the use of printed or stickered 2x2 round tiles for a striped ring of this nature, which have often been used decoratively on coastal or beach-themed sets. Because it only has one connection point and relies on expensive dual molding I doubt we'll see it used much for anything other than its intended purpose, but I figure that intended purpose is widespread enough that it could see plenty of use regardless.
I also love the printed bubble can and use of an opalescent 1x1 round dome and 1x1 round plate with bar as a bubble wand! Really clever accessory that doesn't require any new molds, and the opalescent color is perfect for the slight iridescence of bubble solution.
I'm somewhat ambivalent about the figures themselves—I've never been outright opposed to costumed figs but I don't find them as useful as other types of figs. My favorite would have to be the frog due to their clever accessory and great face print.
The printed monkey tail (which you initially mistook for a new mold) is definitely a nice piece—one thing I especially like about it is that since it's somewhat flat and extends up and to the side instead of down or straight out from the tail, it makes it easier to have a character using it sit down in a seat or cockpit than many other animal tail pieces.
One last note—we sadly haven't seen any news about the Animal Crossing theme this year (leading to worries it might be ending or going on hiatus to make way for the sure-to-be-larger Pokémon theme), but if they do return to that theme then that lion tail with the tufted end would be useful for lion and rhino villagers. My favorite character, Merengue, is a rhino, so I'm hoping we might see her in a future set!
The monkey tail isn’t printed…but thanks for the reminder that I made an error 😉
DeleteD'oh I didn't mean to write printed there, don't know what my brain was doing.
DeleteSome other rabbit heads are Bunnie and Sasha from the Animal Crossing theme. Apart from them, there are mostly variations of the heads already shown.
ReplyDeleteCan’t wait to mash up koala Minifig with elements fron the radio station turntable (2) to allow Kid Koala to hang with my DJ Vadim. Next, we need Q Bert.
