Review: 21363 The Goonies from LEGO® Ideas

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

Set 21363 The Goonies originated from a challenge on the LEGO® Ideas platform to recreate some iconic 1980s memories in LEGO form.

With 12 minifigures included, there's a perfect number for a whole team (well, at least a women's lacrosse team).  The characters and the fun, swashbuckling escapade storyline made The Goonies a cult classic, so let's see what the set has to offer.

The If We Could Turn Back Time challenge on the LEGO Ideas platform had 10 finalists selected, who then went through to a fan vote resulting in two winners.  The first winning set to be released as an actual LEGO set was 21361 Gremlins – Gizmo (see Eero's review of set 21361 Gizmo). The Goonies (1985), designed by Vaggelis Ntezes aka Delusion Brick, is the second winning entry.

The Goonies movie was based on a story by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. It tells the story of a group of misfit children who live in the Goon Docks area of Astoria, Oregon – hence their nickname. One Goonie, Mickey, comes across a treasure map in his attic and they all decide to find the treasure as a way of saving Mickey's home which is under foreclosure. The movie is a comedy adventure, and they encounter fun moments and close calls when trying to find One-Eyed Willie's treasure, all while being pursued by a criminal family known as the Fratellis.

New moulds

There are five new 'moulds' introduced in the set.  Two are fabric sails, two minifigure headgear elements and one is a new arch element.

Brick Arch 1 x 3 x 2 (part 5850)

  • 20x Brick Arch 1 x 3 x 2 in Light Bluish Gray (6575102 | 5850)

The most similar mould is Brick Arch 1 x 3 x 2 (88292), shown in medium nougat above. It has a rounded tip with an S-shaped inner curve. Compare 88292 to the new mould 5850 and the difference is shaping immediately becomes clear. The parts databases will now need to come up with a more descriptive name, to distinguish the two!

The shaping of 88292 results in an ogee arch, when two are placed in a reflecting position. When two 5850 arches are placed in the same position, you get a traditional round arch. I hope that this is not a replacement mould, as I am fond of the ogee arch.

With its 1x1x1 cutout, the new Arch 1 x 3 x 2 (5850) belongs in a similar family to its big brother Arch 1 x 4 x 3 (80543, shown in white above). While we already have the complete Arch 1 x 6 x 2 (15254, shown in light aqua), the half-arch is still a welcome addition for tight situations.

The arc has a perfect 2-module radius, and so the space under the arch can be filled very neatly by a few different elements attached via the studs below, for example:
  • Curved 2 x 2 x 1 2/3 Quarter Dome with 1 Cutout (5906, shown in pearl gold),
  • Brick Curved 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 with 1 Cutout (5907, shown in bright light orange),
  • Brick Arch 1 x 3 x 1 2/3 Curved Top (5843, shown in blue),
  • 1 x 1 diameter Tube with 90 Degree Elbow 2 x 2 x 1 (25214, shown in medium azure),
  • and maybe we can also include Slope, Curved 3 x 1 x 2 with Hollow Stud (33243, shown in lime) although it's not quite perfect.

Let's move on from studs-up to sideway connections. If you consider that the area under the arch is actually a quarter of a 4x4 circle, there's obviously many more elements that fit the space beneath, including:
  • Round Corner 2 x 2 without Studs (5924, shown in black below),
  • Slope 2 x 2 x 2/3 Corner Round (5852, shown in tan),
  • Brick, Round Corner 2 x 2 Macaroni (85080),
  • Tile Round 2 x 2 Macaroni (27925),
  • and 2 x 2 x 5  Quarter Circle Wall (30987).

You can then extrapolate when using two arches to give a semi-circular area, or even four to give a 4x4 round area to fill, as shown above with the 4x4 round plate (60474, in orange).

Window 1 x 4 x 3, Rounded Top with 4 Panes and Sill (5260, from LEGO® Animal Crossing sets) is compatible with the new arch, offering amore compact alternative to using the 1 x 6 x 2 arch variants.

Sails

The galleon in the movie has been abandoned for some time so it is no surprise to see that the sails are in poor shape.

  • Ragged Big Sail in Tan (6572650)
  • Ragged Small Sail in Tan (6572670)
The two ragged sails are both 19 modules wide across their connection points.  There is a central 'tear' in the larger sail that facilitates a play feature; more on that later. This tear limits the re-use of the larger sail in other sets and your mocs though.

Minifigure headgear

There are two new headgear moulds used to represent characters from the movie; they are all a pretty good match for their onscreen characters.

  • 1x Beret with Hair in Black (6551829)  worn by Mama Fratelli

  • 1x Tricorn Hat with Bandana in Black (6551526)  worn by Sloth
These should all prove popular on the secondary market, especially if they do not get added to LEGO Pick a Brick next year.

New prints

There are two new printed tiles included, representing two key artefacts in the movie.

  • Tile 1 x 2 with 'Copper Bones' print in Trans-Clear (6551523)
  • Tile 2 x 3 with One-Eyed Willie's map in Tan (6551522)
"Copper Bones" is Chester Copperpot's copper medallion that is used as a key later in the Goonies' adventure to find the treasure. Mickey finds One-Eyed Willy's map in his attic and uses it to try and find the treasure.

Recolours

There are only three recolours in the set; surprisingly few given the size of the model.

  • Vehicle Base, Trailer Half 6 x 16 x 2 2/3 in Reddish Brown (6579921 | 64954, 3362)
  • Brick Arch 1 x 5 x 3 1/3 Curved Top in Reddish Brown (6568559 | 5845)
  • Fist in Red (6576281 | 1753)

The fist element has only been used in two previous sets, both from gaming themes: 71407 Cat Peach Suit and Frozen Tower in 2022 and 76998 Knuckles and the Master Emerald Shrine in 2024. It's used to create a bigger hand element for characters in those sets; both the left (1753) and right (1752) fists are only found in 71407.

In 21363, only the left fist is supplied, in red to depict Data's comedy pop-out boxing glove invention that he wears on a chest rig.

Back from the past

  • Hair Long Wavy with Center Part in Reddish Brown (6535028 | 95225, 33461)
One final element of interest is a long wavy hair element, used for the figurehead on the bow of the ship, which has only been seen in reddish brown in sets twice before. It first appeared in 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle released in 2016 for the Scarlet Witch, and then for Carina Smyth in 71042 Silent Mary released in 2017. The piece has a new element ID in 21363 The Goonies since it has been out of production for a while.

Stickers

There is one small sticker sheet with four stickers.

  1. Outline version of One-Eyed Willie's minifigure head design.
  2. Inferno is the name of One-Eyed Willie's ship.
  3. Sloth's only source of entertainment while locked up in the basement are black and white pirate movies.
  4. The "wanted" newspaper clipping, following the Franelli's prison breakout. The date 4/6/82 may relate to the fan designer of the original LEGO Ideas submission.

Minifigures

There are 12 minifigures included in the set. Top row, left to right we have  Stef, Brand, Andy, Chunk, Mouth, Mikey and Data.  Bottom row, left to right we have Mama Fratelli and her two sons Jake and Francis Fratelli, Sloth and One-Eyed Willie. All the new elements are detailed for each character below.

Michael "Mikey" Walsh

  • Torso with print in Dark Blue (6578727)
Mikey is quite a plain character but his denim jacket is a nice new print. I'm not sure his face matches his movie character, due to the freckles.

Brandon "Brand" Walsh

  • 1x Hair with Bandana in Medium Nougat (6576907 | 69558) - new recolour
  • 1x Torso with print in Light Bluish Gray (6578750)
  • Legs with print in Light Bluish Gray (6551510)
  • 1x Hair with Bandana in Medium Nougat (6576907 | 69558)  worn by Brand is a recolour of the one worn by Jay in six different sets between 2021-2022.

Brand is the jacked older brother of Mickey and his minifigure version looks great. The printing of his shorts looks like an apron here as only the front is printed, duel-moulded legs might have been better.

Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen

  • 1x Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551507)
  • 1x Torso with print in Red (6578735)
The LEGO Graphic Design team really got Chunk's face and mouth spot on! If you contrast Chunk's face with Mikey's, you can see why having a new specific face design really makes the minifigure a much closer depiction of a movie character.

Clark "Mouth" Devereaux

  • 1x Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551501)
  • 1x Torso with print in Light Bluish Gray (6578734)
Mouth has another great torso print and I think they have captured his facial features. The reverse view recreates a moment in the movie when Mouth places an extravagant joke meal order then blows a kiss to Mama Fratelli, which results in her grabbing his chin and threatening to cut off his tongue!

Andrea "Andy" Theresa Carmichael

  • Torso with print in Yellow (6578803)
  • Legs with print in White (6551514)
Andy's face is another generic female face that could be anyone, but her new printed torso and legs look great, well from the front at least in the case of her legs.

Stephanie "Stef" Steinbrenner

  • 1x Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551511)
  • 1x Torso with print in Dark Red (6578801)

I really like how accurate Stef's torso is; full of detail, front and back.  Her face printing is perfect, with the large glasses and her penchant for chewing and blowing bubbles with gum.

Richard "Data" Wang

  • 1x Minifig Head with print in Warm Tan (6551505)
  • 1x Torso with print in Olive Green  (6578736)
Data is a source of many a comedy moment in the movie.  His torso printing is detailed at the front but he actually wears more of a long trench coat in the movie rather than the short jacket depicted here.

Minifigure Data comes with a couple of his inventions and accessories used during the treasure hunt.  His pop out boxing glove, dynamite 'candle' and chattering teeth grappling hook are fun additions to his arsenal.

Lotney "Sloth" Fratelli

  • 1x Tricorn Hat with Bandana in Black (6551526)
  • 1x Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551503)
  • 1x Torso with print in Dark Blue (6578726)
Sloth has a perfect torso print and his distinctive features clearly necessitated a new face print.

Just for comparison, a previous Sloth minifigure was released in 2017 with 71267 The Goonies Level Pack, part of the LEGO® Dimensions theme. You can see there are a few differences to the new face print: the eyes are slightly more even, the presence of eyebrows, and a red tongue rather than pink. In addition, there are a few small differences to the red braces/suspenders and the light nougat(ish) curve of skin has gone from the neck area. Sloth wears his tricorn hat, so sadly the unique LEGO Dimensions head/hair piece has not been remade for this version.

One-Eyed Willie

  • 1x Minifig Head with skull and eye patch print in White (6551520)
  • 1x Torso with print in Dark Red (6578804)
Pirate fans will rejoice in the fabulously detailed new torso print for One-Eyed Willie. This definitely has wider use in mocs. His new face print, too, is generic enough to be used more widely.

Mama Fratelli

Mama Fratelli is the matriarch of the criminal family of baddies in the movie.  She is small in stature but big in attitude.

  • Beret with Hair in Black (6551829) - new mould
  • Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551518)
  • Torso with print in Black (6582563)
Her likeness has been well captured in LEGO form with the new mould for her beret and bobbed hair,  and although she wears a black dress in the movie, the use of black minifigure legs gives greater posing options. The only little detail missing that would have brought me joy would be the anchor tattoo reading 'son' that's on her forearm in the movie.

Jake Fratelli

  • Minifig Head Jacob Black, Black Eyebrows, Mean Grin/Smirk in Warm Tan (6523160 | 110798) has only appeared once before in  21354 Twilight The Cullen House
  • Torso with print in Black (6578752)
While Jake reuses a face print, its actually a good match for his character in the movie and his torso print is a good recreation of his movie outfit.

Francis Fratelli

  • Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6551516)
  • Torso with print in Dark Bluish Gray (65787530)
Francis Fratelli spends a lot of the movie wearing his flat cap (which is included in the set) while being in denial about wearing a toupee.  His minifigure facial features are great, and I particularly love his torso as its one I would use for mocs involving a detective, criminal or a police officer wearing a shoulder holster.

© 2017 TT Games Ltd.

Francis Fratelli was a non-playing character in the LEGO Dimensions game. I prefer the colouring used for his hair and eyebrows in the game. It's not hugely important that his hair isn't quite the right shade for the character, as he has a flat cap to wear; I'm not sure about the ginger eyebrows though!

The minifigures come with a variety of accessories, including Data's gadgets, Stef's bubble gum, Francis' hat, pistols, swords, knifes and one massive inhaler!

  • 3 x Tile Round 1 x 2 in Dark Bluish Grey (6531562 | 1126)

Build

With 21 bags of elements and two instruction booklets, there's a fair bit of building to be done.

The set is a hybrid of two main aspects of the movie; the Inferno (One-Eyed Willie's ship) and the treasure hunt through a network of booby-trapped tunnels. The two sides are built concurrently, with the ship's starboard hull on one side and the network of tunnels and caves on the other.

Section one

The first section to be built is the bow of the ship with Sloth's basement cell on the other side. There are lots of little details, like the leaking pipes with water pools that the Goonies bang and pull on to try and get the attention of folks above.  Plus, who can forget the money-printing press and Data's famous fifty dolla' bill shouts of joy.

When we first meet Sloth in the movie, he is watching an old swashbuckling pirate movie on a black and white television while chained up in the basement.  All these details are captured in the LEGO version, although he has a bar of LEGO chocolate rather than the Baby Ruth bar in the movie.

The upper section is the Fratelli's diner; this is within the disused lighthouse in the film of course. There's a few fun little movie references like the blender that Mrs Fratelli threatens the children with, and the four glasses of 'water' she serves them – suspiciously orange and murky, just like in the movie.

The ship's hull sections are all attached via bars and clips; a very effective method to achieve the slight slope of the upper section. The cannons with their hinged doors and the galleon's black trim are nice  details that continue along the length of the hull.

Section two

The next section is the first tunnel that our explorers find in the movie.  It contains a booby-trap play feature along with the skeletal remains of Chester Copperpot, a previous treasure hunter who died when crushed by one of the huge boulders.  The "Copper Bones" printed tile depicts the copper medallion that is used as a key later in the search.

The two boulders are brick-built rather than using two of the half-rock elements; an added building technique that I liked.

The weight of the brick-built rocks helps to ensure the play mechanism is effective when they fall from the ceiling. In the film, the series of chained boulders are released via a trip wire. Here, there is a different mechanism, using a lever with a damper, but the play feature is still cute.

The two sections unite and the ragged main sail is placed into position on the deck.  There are some other repeating features that get added to every section: the cannons, the black strips between the reddish brown hull, the railing on the deck and the rockwork at the base, with hints of medium azure sea. The bow has a bit of a bath tub shape at the bow when compared to the original model, so doesn't quite hit the mark there.

Section three

The third section includes the pool of water next to the waterfall with the hanging bucket, the skull in the rock and the key to access the lower tunnel. The floor has a flap that opens via a series of gears when the key is turned.

Just like in the movie, the Copper Bones key is placed in the mechanism and turned. In the set, the turning of the key operates the gears to lower (and raise) the floor opening.

As mentioned, all of the hull sides are built and attached in the same manner.  There are two sets of bar attachments on the hull facade which click into position using the clips on the main build side. It's a neat solution which allows the nice angle of the ship's hull to be achieved.

With three sections built, both the ship and the diorama are both taking shape. The rockwork on the outside of the hull adds to the impression that this is a shipwreck. Although admittedly, the Inferno does sail away in the final scene of the movie!

Section four

Section four covers the stern of the ship and is the largest and most complex section of the set.

The final section of the build adds the slide from the ship into the water using the dark orange  4 x 4 x 3 quarter cylinder panel (4041).  It was also nice to see the three 1 x 1 curved brick in trans-clear (6554492 | 7126) used as the cascading water here. They have only been used once before, as the headlights on a truck in one LEGO® City set this year, 60467 Heavy-Duty Recovery Tow Truck with Crane.

The nice angle for the branch is achieved using 1x2 round half bricks (60813) to permit the 1x1 brick with Technic axle hole to be angled. The same method is used for both sides.

One of the classic scenes from the movie's climax is when the children must play the correct keys on the piano to escape. Pressing the wrong keys makes the escape route collapse while pressing the correct keys opens the escape route.

The LEGO version has been cleverly designed so that pressing certain keys allows the doorway to be accessed. The use of the click hinges attaching to clip hinges means that the floor portions are easy to ping off when pressing down on the grille tiles that represent piano keys.

The rear shows the clever mechanism: pressing the piano key to raise the damper (indicated by the orange arrow above) allows the mechanism to slide to the right, which pulls the Technic beam (green arrow), and the shifting beam turns the axle to lower the bridge (teal arrow).

As a side note, the giant octopus seen in the image above is a nod to a deleted scene from the original movie. In some screenings, the giant octopus scene remained but it had gone by the time the movie was in theatres more widely. The giant octopus is dark red with yellow eyes and attacks Stef and Mouth as they are wading through the water after escaping the Inferno.  Data saves the day by shoving his Walkman into the octopus' mouth and it sidles off, dancing to some funky '80s music... nothing was lost by removing this scene, to be honest! It's funny to see it randomly included here though.

The top floor of the final section takes us back into the hull of the galleon, where One-Eyed Willie's treasure hides. This part was not actually in the original submission but was added to complete the storyline. His little scales are cute, just  make sure no one touches One-Eyed Willie's share of the treasure!

While one section of the stern of the ship is attached with bars and clips, there's a different method used for the other.  Two 2-module bars with ring (78258) are inserted into 1x1 brick with stud on one side and the rear of 1x1 headlight bricks on the other – an ingenious solution.

With the hull in position, the last part of the build add the second ragged sail and a broken mast to complete the Inferno.

Play features

To summarise, the main play features are:
  1. Hidden entry to the secret passageways in the fireplace
  2. Lever to make boulder on chains fall
  3. Turning key to open trapdoor
  4. Slippery branch
  5. Piano keys to open doorway and allow exit
  6. Slide into the water
  7. Ripped sail to slide down
There's a lot going on in the set to make this all happen, and its a credit to both the fan designer, Vaggelis Ntezes and then LEGO designer Marina Stampoli and her colleagues including Markus Rollbühler and Tom Gerardin for bringing so many features from the original model to retail standard. The compromise with the smaller set size is that the play features are rather cramped and the minifigures can't really fit in with the mechanisms when activated.

Final thoughts

The set is neither a ship nor a diorama; it is both.

It's a large model – 62 cm (24.5 in.) long, 36 cm (14 in.) high,  and 18 cm (7 in.) deep – so you may have to think about where to display it before you spend your hard-earned cash. On that note, the set's recommended retail price of US$329.99/ £269.99/ 299.99€ for 2912 pieces gives a price per piece of 11c/10c/9p.

There's quite a few interesting elements in the set with five new moulds and a lot of rarer elements included (although sadly few recolours). There's also a lot of larger elements used for the hull sections, plus lets not forget the 12 minifigures – all these factors may help to justify the cost.

It was an enjoyable build, with some clever techniques for the play features and for the hull shaping in particular.  The play features are well-integrated and as true to the movie as possible given the limitations of this being a LEGO model.  For fans of the movie there's a lot to love, the minifigures have captured the main features of the cast, and most the movies key scenes are included but will they actually want to buy this model and play with it?

The Goonies was released in 1985, and time will tell if those who remember its initial release and time in theatres may be as interested in buying a play set. Having said that, the movie has achieved cult status and I imagine it will have a wider appeal among younger fans.  The movie knew what it was doing, what with a pirate ship, adventure, booby traps and treasure – as all those things are appealing to LEGO fans irrespective of their knowledge of the movie!

  1. Wow, I hadn't even noticed that new half arch piece until this review! A piece like that had been on my wanted list for a long time—not only is a pair of them more compact than the 1x6x2 arch, but being able to use only a half of one opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities. Interestingly, that piece could've potentially been used in the recent Game Boy set, which instead had to opt for the 1x3x2 inverted half arch flipped around compared to the other nearby parts.
