Posted by Elspeth De Montes

In Season 2 of the popular Netflix series Wednesday, her parents Morticia and Gomez Addams move into Rotwood Cottage which is situated within the grounds of her school, Nevermore Academy.

The Gothic-style cottage in the series was redecorated by Morticia in her unique style, so let's see if the designers have managed to capture some of the fun details, in LEGO® Wednesday set 76786 Morticia's Cottage.

Rotwood Cottage is a Nevermore Academy staff residence; a fictional structure that was created in miniature for the external views in the series.

Recolours

There are six recolours in the set.

  • 15x Plant, Plate 1 x 1 Round with 3 Leaves in Sand Green (6570775 | 32607)

Amazingly this is the 26th colour of this element, and probably an overdue colour as sand green is a useful muted green, suitable for landscapes, trees and flowers.

  • 2x Panel 1 x 6 x 7 with 2 Columns and Arch in Sand Blue (6570751 | 40066)
  • 1x Wedge 2 x 2 Facet in Sand Blue (6570754 | 87620)
  • 1x Plate Special Round 2 x 2 with Melting Drops on Sides in Red (6539361 | 65700)

  • 4x Brick Special 1 x 2 with Masonry Brick Profile in Dark Blue (6570773 | 98283)

  • 1x Windscreen 2 x 6 x 2 Train without Glass in Black (6564586 | 13760, 31592)

This is a great recolour, for folks who like to build vehicles of course. While this is a new recolour for this particular mould, there was a similar 2 x 6 x 2 train windscreen in black with glass (656730 | 6567c01) in 4564 Freight Rail Runner, back in 1994. The older mould had the glass fixed in place whereas this newer mould has a separate windscreen glass element (13756, 35168).

Mini-dolls

There are four mini-dolls included in the set: Lurch, Morticia Addams, Wednesday Addams and Bianca Barclay. Each of the new elements for each character are noted below.

Lurch

  • 1x Minidoll Head Male with print in Light Nougat (6551187)
  • 1x Minidoll Torso Boy with print in Light Nougat (65731180)
  • 1x Minidoll Hips and Trousers with Back Pockets  in Black (6566578)

Lurch gets a bit of extra height from his shoe-lifts, aka mini-doll shoes in black (6563326 | 5107) which also appeared in one of the other new LEGO Wednesday sets, 76784 Black Dahlia Flower.

Morticia Addams

  • 1x Hair Long and Straight, Center Parted in Black (6574305)
  • 1x Minidoll Torso Woman with print in Light Nougat (6573085)
  • 1x Minidoll Head with print in Light Nougat (6551179)
  • 1x Minidoll Hips and Full Length Skirt with print in Black (6551181)
This is a wonderful depiction of the character, who is played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Wednesday

This particular Wednesday mini-doll has appeared once before in 76781 Wednesday & Enid's Dorm Room (read Toby's review of set 76781).

Bianca Barclay

  • 1x Minidoll Head, Narrow Jawline [Plain] in Reddish Brown (6551182)
  • 1x Minidoll Torso with print in Reddish Brown (6573096)
  • 1x Minidoll Hips and Wide Pants with print in Black (6551186)

This popular student at the Academy is a siren, meaning she can use her powers to persuade others to obey her will. She is relevant for inclusion here, as she is blackmailed into using her power on Morticia.

Rare elements

In one set:

In two sets:

  • 6x Plant, with Bar and Off-shoot with Stud in Black (6530043 | 1566) we first noticed these in last years Modular Building 10350 Tudor Corner (read our review of set 10350).
  • 14x Plant, Flower, Plate Round 1 x 1 with 5 Petals in Dark Blue (6495167 | 24866)
  • 2x Technic Plate 1 x 5 with Smooth Ends, 4 Studs and Centre Axle Hole in  Light Bluish Gray (6549304 | 50029)

Special mention also goes to the solitary light bluish gray gargoyle (6492553 | 5785). It appears in three other sets and is available on Pick a Brick, but is worth highlighting as it's such an awesome element. In fact, the Pick a Brick team mentioned that it is the most popular animal on their site this year! (Yes, LEGO categorise it as an animal.)

Returning element

The dark blue rounded window was last seen in 2019, so it is nice to see this element return.
  • 7x Window 1 x 2 x 2 2/3 with Rounded Top in Dark Blue (6570774 | 30044)

Stickers

There are two sticker sheets.

I'm going to be honest here, I genuinely thought the arched window was a printed element when I first saw the product image, but the three stained glass windows are all stickers. It was a little disappointing for me when I first opened the set, but to be fair they look pretty good in position.

The second sticker sheet mainly adds some details for the interior of the house. Spot the registration plate ADD 4MS that is used for the family car in the Netflix series.

The build

Car

The four mini-dolls will all fit inside this 6-module wide vehicle, but at the expense of a steering wheel as Lurch’s added height takes up space.

The wheels are built up using black saucers (3576) and 1x1 round tiles to add hub detailing.

The front radiator is made using a stack of four 2x2 dishes, while the gargoyle is placed as the hood ornament on the end of the bonnet.

The LEGO Addams family car really is great, although it is shorter than the car in the TV show. The car in the series was built especially for filming, and is a hybrid of a stretched 38 Pontiac on a Mercedes-Benz G Wagon chassis. This meant the vehicle was robust enough for filming while also retaining the feel of the 1938 Pontiac Silver Streak on which it is based.

Cottage

The cottage has three separate sections that are connected with hinges to allow the internal areas to be viewed and played with.

The sections are also easily detached for play, something that is needed to allow fingers to fit inside the cramped interiors.

The first section to be built is the main door with an entrance hall downstairs and the bedroom upstairs. There's a few nods to the Gothic architectural style with a couple of large stained glass windows, pointed arches over the front door and the steep pitched roof.  The image above shows the nice techniques used here; the angled LEGO® Technic connectors hold the two roof plates in position at the correct angle to form the triangular shape.

The next section on the right has Morticia's sitting room on the ground floor and then the bathroom on the first floor. The black toilet and the crossed swords are a nice touch in the bathroom. The large red couch seen in the series becomes an armchair in the LEGO version.

There's  a small play feature in Morticia's sitting room as the back of the fireplace can be removed.  I'm not sure if this relates to a moment later in the series (no spoilers for Season 2), but it's a little odd.  I'm not sure it achieves much unless you want to cook the hotdog, it's hidden in the kitchen, over the flames.

It's really very tricky to get Morticia to sit nicely in the armchair.  The combination of her hair and the mini-doll extended legs means Morticia spends most of her time sprawled in front of the fire in a most unladylike fashion.

Both of the side builds use the same combination of  three curved slopes for the eaves; 3 x 3 corner with 1/3 inverted cutout (73682), 2 x 6 inverted slope in Black (6806) and the  3 x 1 slope with 1/3 inverted cutout (70681).

The lefthand side of the cottage houses the seance room of the cottage's original inhabitant, Rosaline Rotwood (played by Lady Gaga) – with some sort of crystal ball with dark figure inside on the table, plus a couple of tall candlesticks. If only the characters could all fit in there!

Downstairs is the meagre kitchen area. There's a table in the kitchen with a hotdog hidden inside but no space to sit in there.

On the plus side, Morticia can fit into the gap between the table and the kitchen sink to get those dirty dishes cleaned!

The main play feature are the hinged sections that open to allow access. Having said that, the mini-dolls are not a great fit for the small rooms and lack of connections when sitting.

Nor is there much space for decoration, in fact most of the decorations can be left off, leaving a few wall details and stickers in place. There's a four poster bed, table with crystal ball, a couple of candlesticks, the table with hotdog hiding inside, an armchair and the telephone on a table.

Conclusion

The set is a simple but cute build – the angled roof is particularly nice – with a good mechanism to open the set for play. Both the cottage and the car have a good resemblance to the source material given the limits of the size and details in a LEGO set this size.

With an RRP $109.99, £89.99, €99.99, the price per piece (PPP) is 11.0c, 9.0p, 10.0c but there are quite a few smaller parts in there.

One small niggle I had related specifically to the double arched windows and the arch above, again this might just be me. The large gap with the top studs of the rounded windows visible was not pretty and I felt that there may have been a nicer way to create the Gothic window arches here .

The set does have a few other issues; the cramped interiors and mini-dolls don't really allow much play inside. I realise mini-dolls are a choice here but I personally prefer minifigures and find them more able to deal with the smaller confines of play in houses and vehicles. In terms of a set with some nice recolours and a 'haunted house' feel, I think there's enough to enjoy and MOC with, but it's a lot to spend if you are not a fan of the TV series, and mini-dolls are not as collectible as minifigures in general.

The removable fireplace wall is so you can place a book back there, judging by the promotional images. I imagine it's important to the story of Season 2 but I haven't watched the show at all to know.
I'll probably end up picking this up when it goes on sale later, like I did with the first wave of Wednesday sets (a lot of useful parts in those two sets!).

At some point there needs to be better arched windows, it's really odd that there aren't even any panes for the 1x2 arched windows.
