Lego GwP 5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Compass

Exclusive print

The set comes with one decorated element designed especially for this model.

  • 1 x Dish 6 x 6 Inverted (Radar) with Solid Studs in Brick Yellow/ Tan with Compass print in Black, Dark Red, Medium Nougat and Pearl Gold (6600548)

This rather fine dial for the compass has been printed with four colours, although my copy suffers from a slight misalignment on the print which is disappointing, pun intended.

Rare pieces

It's nice to get two pieces only seen in one or two other sets to date.

Finished model

This is a largely symmetrical, studs-up, basic build and really quite pleasing to construct. The interlacing of basic and angled elements builds up in an interesting way and the final effect of the lined casing is effective.

I thought it was a downside that the trans-black colour of the dome makes it somewhat difficult to see inside, but having checked the source material, the dome should actually be opaque. So I actually prefer this slight transparency; it's more visually interesting while still being faithful enough to the movie version.

The golden clasp design is also successful, using just three pearl gold pieces. It is not a functioning clasp, however; the compass is not held shut.

The medium nougat lining is perhaps more of a case of creative license; I assumed it represented leather but the movie version looks more like inlaid mother of pearl: nearly white. Satin-trans clear would therefore have been a better match and an exciting prospect, but of course the necessary pieces don't exist in that colour. Medium nougat was a great choice; it feels opulent and earthy.

At the rear there is a string used as the thin leather strap of the original.

The string is sandwiched between plates and tiles.

And that is all I really have to say about this construction! It's basic, but rather pretty, and a nice life-size object. I think it is a successful GwP, and has many useful medium nougat and black pieces.

Naturally, given the price of the Black Pearl, many may have hoped for a more inspiring or exclusive GwP but I think the thrill of the big ship will be enough to sell itself. In other words, I wouldn't feel compelled to buy Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship in week 1 of sale just to get this compass... however, you will also receive the more desirable 40769 SEGA® Genesis™ Controller GwP – read my review.
