Posted by Ben Davies

Released in the latest LEGO® Creator wave, 31175 Unicorn Castle is quite striking with its bright pastel color scheme and equine inhabitants. Interest piqued, we thought the set was worth a closer look to determine whether it is really as magical as it seems...

New moulds

Traditionally, LEGO Creator sets have shied away from introducing new moulds, preferring to allocate the majority of their budget towards recolours, or quantities of existing elements. The Unicorn Castle bucks this trend by introducing a new moulded foal figure that can be turned into a unicorn.

  • 1x Animal, Foal, Long Mane, Lavender Tail, Black Eyes print (6551708 | 114141)
While similar to the existing Animal, Foal (82445), the new mould features a more prominent mane and tail, as well as a 1.5mm hole in the forehead. This provides a connection point for Creature Body Part, Horn (Unicorn) with Small Pin (7199), which we examined in our review of the most recent LEGO® Friends wave.

Decorated pieces

The two "Pegasi" in the set utilize the existing Animal, Foal (82445) for their body, but have each received an updated eye print with more prominent eyelashes, in addition to a color change.

Recoloured pieces

As a result of its chaotically colorful primary model, the set introduces a surprisingly large number of recoloured elements across the LEGO color palette.

Building experience

As a part of the LEGO Creator 3in1 range, the set includes instructions for three different models; the titular castle, a ship, and a forest cabin.
the base of a castle with coloured semi circular steps and a lavender tower on the far left above a cloud formation

The castle is assembled from three numbered bags of parts. Construction begins with the base of the model which includes clouds and a rainbow staircase, and a small birdhouse.

a central colourful castle with turrets sitting atop a white base depicting clouds

The next bag of elements is used to assemble the castle gatehouse and the base of the turrets. A pair of 2 x 4 x 3 half cone (38317) are mounted upside down to achieve the tapered shaping of the turrets. To achieve the stud inversion, a  1x1 stud with bar (31561) is connected to a 1x1 plate with  vertical clip (44860).
final build is a two storey colourful tower with a smaller single tower standing apart on the left. there are three winged unicorns in position

The third and final bag is used to build the castle's central tower and two turrets. Despite its relatively small footprint, the model is able to stand out through its use of bright colors.

a flat bottomed boat with a stern that looks like a galleon stern in shape. There is a yellow unicorn on the bow

The first alternate model that can be built is a unicorn ship. While the final model is not as clean as the castle, it makes effective use of the pastel colors to differentiate sections of the ship, with a selection of gold elements interspersed for detailing.

one level small square house with three conical huts

Finally, the set can be reassembled into a forest cabin. This is arguably the least cohesive of the models in the set, and feels like an afterthought. It also lacks the restraint of the other models when it comes to the color palette, resulting in it feeling visually overwhelming.

Conclusion

While the primary model is an enjoyable and cohesive build, the secondary models lack the same sort of polish. Historically, alternate models can be hit-or-miss, but it is undeniable that the quality of LEGO Creator 3in1 models has improved significantly over the past 2 to 3 years, causing this to feel like a step backwards.

There is also the issue of value. While not as egregious as 31167 Haunted Mansion, at US$44.99/ £34.99/ 39.99€/ AU$59.99 this set feels overpriced for what it contains. While some of this may be excused by the new mould and numerous recoloured elements included, there are cheaper LEGO Creator 3in1 sets that provide more parts and arguably more polished alternate models.

Despite these issues, I would still recommend this set for those interested in what it contains, but would advise waiting for it to go on sale before doing so.
