Review: 76785 Thing's Apartment from LEGO® Wednesday

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

Three more LEGO® Wednesday sets were announced earlier this year, so let's take a look at one of these October releases: 76785 Thing's Apartment.

Various items from Lego Wednesday set 76785 Thing's Apartment

The sets are all tie-ins related to the Wednesday Netflix TV series, a spin-off of The Addams Family focusing on the teenage daughter's adventures at school. 76785 Thing's Apartment is based on a scene where Wednesday's roommate Enid Sinclair makes Thing its own home.

Lego Wednesday 76785

Background

Thing is a sentient, disembodied hand in The Addams Family franchise, known for serving the family in a variety of ways. In the Netflix series, Thing is tasked with watching over Wednesday at Nevermore Academy by her parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams.

In the Tim Burton-directed season 2 opening episode, Wednesday's roommate Enid creates a home for Thing, to help it feel like it has a place to belong at Nevermore Academy.  This home has been transformed into LEGO form for 76785 Thing's Apartment, and a new mould has been included.

New mould: Plate 1 x 2 with Handle (7508)

1x2 lego plate that is rounded at one end and has a handle at the other
  • 5x Plate 1 x 2 with Handle in Tan (6551994 | 7508)

This is the big brother to Plate Special 1 x 1 Rounded with Handle (26047) – amazingly, the one-stud version has been around since 2016. We first used it in The New Black parts festival and I took a look at the geometry of LEGO part 26047 back then. Let's compare them, as well as some other pieces:

6 lego plates sharing similar features
  • Plate Special 1 x 1 Rounded with Handle (26047)
  • Plate Special 1 x 2 Rounded with 2 Open Studs (35480)
  • Plate 1 x 2 with Handle (7508)
  • Plate Special 1 x 2 with Handle on End (60478)
  • Plate Special 1 x 1 with Handle on 2 Ends (78257)
  • Plate Special 1 x 2 with Handles on 2 Ends (18649)

Plate 1 x 2 with handle most obviously joins the family of plates with handles, although only the 1 x 1 rounded plate with handle, shown in blue, has the same rounded edge at one end of the plate. I've added plate 1 x 2 rounded to highlight that increasing number of rounded plates: perhaps plates with handles are the next element family to see this trend> Kevin's article about parts 77845 & 77850: rounded plates is an excellent read about the rounded plate family.
animation of the lego plate with curved end and bar end. The rounded end is placed on one corner of a 2x2 brick, yet can still rotate 90 degrees.
The rounded edge makes a simple stud connection into a viable, working joint! With the added bar, the piece allows a large range of motion in a small space. The benefit of having a 1x2 plate portion is the extra stud connection point plus, in the case of Thing, it makes the fingers longer without adding another joint.

New prints

lego tiles with one curved end, with 2 styles of printing representing fingernails

  • 5x Tile Round 1 x 1 Half Circle with print in Tan (6551177)
  • 5x Tile Round 1 x 1 Half Circle with print in Tan (6551176)
These new prints represent Thing's fingernails; the two options of au naturale or with black nail varnish applied. These could be very useful for decorative or architectural purposes in your creations.

Recolours

There are 4 recoloured elements in the set.

Sticker sheet

sticker sheet from 76785 Thing's Apartment, with 12 decals
There’s a sticker sheet with a few useful decals: a couple of large wallpaper stickers for the 6x5 panels, a couple more for the patterned bedspread, a mirror and a clock. Other details are more specific, such as a painting of Thing with Uncle Fester.

Unfortunately the two stickers (1 and 2) for Thing's scars had not been cut at all on our kiss-cut sticker sheet, and it seems a few other early reviewers had similar issues, to varying degrees. I got my scissors and managed to cut them out without any mishaps.

If you experience this issue, contact Customer Services for a replacement, but hopefully they've caught it now.

The build

Thing

I was pleased to see that the first thing to be built was Thing, as it seemed like a fun thing to play with.

The new tan plate 1 x 2 with handle (6551994 | 7508) is used to represent the fingers with the bar/clip joint at the knuckle.

The picture above is before adding the stickers. I was in two minds as I liked having a play with the hand sans scars, but for the purposes of the review I thought it best to also add the stickers.

Once its scars are added, there's a closer resemblance to Thing – although Thing in the series actually has a different scar pattern.

Thing's digits only bend at the knuckle joint, sadly limiting poseability and making Thing unable to grasp objects. I won't go into too much depth but LEGO Thing only has metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) due to its digits being represented by the new plate 1 x 2 with handle (7508).

3 views of the Lego Thing hand posing in different ways

Thing can play Rock, Paper, Scissors but would struggle to play the piano!

a mockup of a correctly jointed lego finger, requiring parts that dont exist: a 1x1 plate with a clip either end, and a 1x1 plate with 1 rounded end and one clip end

The problem with adding finger joints is that the hand would then need to be larger to accommodate the longer fingers. More importantly, different clip elements would be required, not all of which exist as yet. I think the balance is okay but one more joint to allow grasping would have been a bonus.

Lego Thing and nail varnish bottle with brush extracted. One nail has been 'painted' by swapping the piece for a black printed one

The nail varnish is cute and there’s a nice little play function with the applicator being removable, revealing the brush. The fact that the brush is dark brown while the nail varnish is black is irritating to me – it seems to make no sense as the broom (90826) appeared in black just last year. Perhaps there was some other mysterious restriction about using this element.

The same setup but now the brush is lime green as is the nail

There's nothing to stop you changing the broom or simply using unprinted 1x1 half circle tiles (35399)  in any other colour, for messily varnished nails. I'm sure Enid prefers Thing in lime.

Thing's apartment

early stages of construction of base frame and sides

The apartment itself is a two-story chest that neatly opens up. The chest itself is a straightforward, yet robust build with side walls that hinge open on the upper level to allow better access.

The curved sides of the lid are built with some nice SNOT  techniques using brackets and then held in position with 1 x 3 x 2 arch (88292).

4 lego items for thing's room

There are four small builds, making Thing's chair, ring box with ring, table and hand-sized bed.  The first three can be rearranged as they have the same connection point: a 2x2 macaroni tile and a 2x2 plate. Some are more accurate than others when compared to the source material, for example the bath is a tan dog bowl in the series, but the hexagonal ring box with mirror and the bed are a good likeness.

All the accessories from Things lego apartment chest, and enid minifig

The other accessories are simple builds, but recognisable items for Thing to play with. There's a notebook, pen, handheld game with LEGO Tetris sticker, and what I think is a fidget spinner.

The lid of the chest uses the six reddish brown 6 x 5 x 3⅓ curved panels (6568558 | 5065) and can be removed to allow storage of Thing's... er... things inside.

When closed up, the whole apartment forms a neat chest with handles, and ample room for everything inside. I love this aspect of the set. The fastening is a simple 1x2 slope which attaches to a stud on the bottom.  A small detail I particularly liked was the door, as the 1 x 1 quarter tiles in trans-clear (6404363 | 84411) on a black background look like either broken windows or cobwebs – suitably eerie.

Conclusion

For fans of the Netflix series, this is a fun set that represents a heartwarming moment in the thrilling first episode of season 2. Thing is a popular character and offers some fun ways to play, but its poseability is limited by his lack of finger joints.

There's some cute little builds and I can imagine younger fans enjoying the play features. The set does rely on the stickers for decoration rather than detailed build techniques.

In terms of value, with a price of £74.99/ US$89.99/ 79.99€ it comes in at 9.1p/ 10.9c/ 9.7c so it's actually reasonably priced as there's a lot of black and various browns in there, if you are looking at a parts pack. When I compare the price tag and the completed set though, for some reason it feels expensive.

With the new minifigure and some unique prints, this set should prove popular with fans of Thing and the successful Netflix series.
