Review and mod: 21371 Wallace & Gromit from LEGO® Ideas

LEGO® Ideas set 21371 Wallace & Gromit from is the 80th release to come from the fan-designed theme. As a long-time fan of Aardman's characters, and these two in particular, I was excited to get the opportunity to take a closer look at the set and its new contents.

The black tyres from Bugatti Type 35 are a nice surprise – this is a very rare set that was only issued to members of the Bugatti Club Denmark at their meet up at LEGO House in June 2026. The mould was originally introduced in white for set 11376 Ford Model T - see our review by Elspeth.

There are just two exclusive printed elements in the set; the remaining decorations are achieved with stickers:

The build

There are 10 bags of parts in the box along with two instruction booklets, each building independent sections. This lets you build with a friend if you want to. 

Bag 1 starts to put together the internal structure of Gromit's sidecar. There's a little Easter egg hidden in the middle, and I won't spoil the surprise, but it certainly raised a smile. There are plenty of multi-directional studs going on, and the whole assembly is 9 modules wide, which requires a few 1x3 jumpers in places, in order to centre parts of the assembly.

The aerodynamic shape of the sidecar, along with its controls, are constructed with the contents bags 2 and 3. At this stage, it has a couple of closely spaced wheels on the underside, but they are not far enough apart to let it balance on its own. (Hence the pose on its side above!)

The long-suffering Gromit – the true brains behind the duo, and more often than not, the hero who saves the day – is built from the parts in bag 4. Although there's only the top half of him, he's quite posable, with articulation at the wrists, shoulders and neck. More importantly, for expressing himself, his ears also swivel in two directions. They are quite under control here though, as our favourite pooch gives us a wave. They are a recolour of the fin element (7511) introduced last year for set 10366 Tropical Aquarium – read more in our interview with its designers.

This bag also finishes off the top and bottom side's central curved panels, and adds the rigid hose trim around the edge of the sidecar. 

It's now time to move to the other instruction boolket and make the motorbike.

I got quite engrossed in the construction of the bike and didn't take any intermediate shots! The finished article is a stylish representation of Wallace's motorised steed, made from the parts in bags 5, 6 and 7.

Now that the motorbike is complete, it attaches to the sidecar, giving both much more stability. As you can see, Gromit is patiently waiting for his partner... so let's get building Wallace!

Bag 8 makes his torso, with the beginnings of his white shirt and sand blue dungarees, set off nicely by his red tie made of a 2x2 tile with quadrant cutouts (3396). There is plenty of studs-in-all-directions building here, and a fun surprise lurks inside, which again I won't spoil for anyone. 

Bag 9 deals with Wallace's limbs. The new "maxaronis", a mould that premiered in 21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, come into their own here to shape the arms and legs, enabling him to sit astride the motorbike. There is articulation at ankles and hips (but the poor chap has no knee joints). The shoulders, elbows and wrists also rotate. 

The pre-bent thumbs look a bit awkward but do provide a practical solution to enable him to clutch the handlebars. The light nougat recolour of the 90° macaronis make great fingers to create his iconic plasticine look.

The final bag finishes off his head, complete with that familiar cheesy grin and big teeth. Safety first, of course: he is also wearing a white crash helmet. 

The finished model is pretty sturdy and can be picked up while supporting the join between motorcycle and sidecar. It is fun to pose Gromit's goggles over his eyes, and ears to flap behind him as if they are travelling at high speed.

While the front and side views present themselves very well, the rear is a little less polished - most notably the back of Wallace's head. The poor chap has some awkward anti-studs showing below the rear of the crash helmet. I think the inclusion of a light nougat 2x2 inverted tile would have helped a lot. Ideally it would have been nice to also have some inverted 1x2 semicircular tiles to cover the rear of his cheeks - but sadly they do not exist.

I've been a massive fan of Wallace & Gromit's antics ever since I first saw A Grand Day Out. I've had this promotional poster of A Close Shave framed on my wall for many years... it was a freebie when you bought the VHS tape! 

As you can see, the final model is pretty faithful to the reference material. However, I noticed one important omission: our model does not have a ladder! How are the boys going to clean any windows (their speciality) without one?

Adding the missing ladder to LEGO Wallace & Gromit

With a bit of experimentation, I came up with a design for a 7-rung ladder which was a reasonable representation of the vital missing item. It hangs on two red hooks, which simply clip onto the rigid hose decoration around the middle of the sidecar. 

The choice of LEGO® Technic parts in a suitable colour for wood was a little bit limited, but I managed to make it work in medium nougat. Here is a full parts list if you would like to build one yourself:

There, that's better! Now the chaps can get on with the important business of cleaning all those grubby windows. 

It's a nice quick mod to improve the model, but if you want the sidecar to transform into Gromit's little plane, I think it will require considerably more time!

Conclusion

Beloved characters such as Wallace & Gromit can be difficult to implement accurately in brick form, but I think this LEGO® Ideas set has definitely done them justice, as well as the original fan design by Sébastien Esnault. It is an engaging model to build with some delightful Easter eggs hidden in various places. 

The complexity of the building techniques is one reason for the 18+ age range but I am sure there are plenty of capable, much younger folk out there who would be able to tackle this build if they have had some help at hand if needed.

The finished model is strong and sturdy, and makes an excellent display piece of our favourite plasticine pals for fans of all ages. At US$99.99/ £89.99/ 99.99€/AU$149.99, the price feels about right for a model of this size and complexity. I'm sure this will be a popular set not just with LEGO fans, but also with fans of Wallace & Gromit's many adventures.
