Review: 11513 Dark Flowers Arrangement from LEGO® Botanicals

The LEGO® Botanicals theme has several frequent typologies, one of which is the classic bouquet that requires an external vase for display. Last year's 10345 Flower Arrangement (see Thomas' review of set 10345) offered an alternative with a brick-built base that makes the model straightforward to display while keeping the essential idea of arranging different flowers with varying colours and shapes. Set 11513 Dark Flowers Arrangement is a smaller version of 10345 with a Gothic twist. It is a fitting arrangement for fans of old leather-bound books, black wax candles and Tim Burton.

Recolours

• 3x +1 spare Technic Pin Connector Round 1L [Beam] in Green (6619985 | 18654) 
• 10x +1 Plate Round 1 x 1 with Hollow Stud and Underside Clip in Sand Green (6591730 | 5264) 

The round plate with underside clip is a lovely piece introduced last year. I'm happy to see any new colours for it, and sand green is an especially beautiful hue.

Dark purple bonanza. A nice, shapely selection; these pieces could define a MOC in their own right.

Three new recolours in yellowish green here, all plant-themed. They're vibrant, contrasting the brooding colour scheme of this set.

• Plant, Sunflower 2 x 2 with 16 Petals in Tan (6614145 | 6901) 
• Technic Axle and Pin Connector Angled Triple - 60° in Black (6549312 | 7329) 
• Wheel Cover / Hub Cap 28 Spokes 18mm D. in Black (6620687 | 37195) 
• Equipment Umbrella Top with No Bottom Flaps, 6 x 6 with Top Stud in Black (6635733 | 4094b, 49128) 
• 4x Tile Round 2 x 2 Half Circle in Blue Violet (6635738 | 5520) 

The black triple Technic connector will have many fans, as it is a universally useful colour for this relatively new piece. The umbrella and the wheel hub match this set's Gothic vibe. The tan sunflower is a surprising recolour: I thought it would have appeared as a bird nest in some LEGO® City or LEGO® Creator set. It's good  to see the selection of blue violet pieces growing.

 

• 24x Shield Triangular in Dark Red (6635731 | 3846) 

The dark red classic shields are beautiful, but the piece is not very easy to use due to its robust, two-bar handle. The shape and the colour would fit red brick Gothic (revival) architecture.

• 8x Wheel Arch, Mudguard 2 x 3 x 1 1/3 with 2 x 2 Plate in Dark Red (6635741 | 49097) 

I've reviewed countless sets with this mudguard piece. I review a lot of plant and creature sets, and the set designers really like this curve in such products. I like it a lot, too, although it would be so much more useful with a 1x2 plate instead of the 2x2.

Rare parts

•  9x Windscreen, Curved 4 x 5 in Black (6597398 | 7613) – previously in 11378 Douglas DC-3 PAN AM Airliner 

This lovely curved piece was introduced in January in 11501 Tulip Bouquet, and Thomas analysed its beautiful curves in his review. I'm really happy getting a bunch in a cheaper set. Black is not the most exciting of colours, but I'm sure I'll find some enticing uses for them.

• 8x Large Figure Shoulder Cover, Armor, Round, Smooth with Bar in Dark Red (6593279 | 1686) – in 2 other sets

Another piece I really like. Look at the smooth, bulbous shape, cast in dark red – which might just be my favourite LEGO colour. 

The model

The lower part is dominated by two large blossoms, a dark purple anemone and a dark red dahlia. Three black tulips crown the arrangement, which is flanked by two beautiful dark red roses. A lone but fun black petunia, using the umbrella piece, sticks out from the bottom right. The whole is supported by lavender mistflowers and – apparently – bright yellowish green pimpernels, plus some green leaves. There are additional connection points for extra flowers on the base.

The arrangement of the flowers is well-balanced. Dark purple and dark red look great; almost velvety in the subdued colour scheme. 

However, I don't like the bright green leaves here. There are only a few of them, and so the bright spots of colour they create feel too severed, and distracting – especially as they're just ordinary leaves and not some heartstopping blossoms.

Furthermore, the base looks too short, making the blossoms very close to the surface below, which makes the flowers look silly – as if the stems were cut too close to the blossom. However, it would have been a bad idea to raise the price by adding extra bricks on the bottom of the base. In short, I think that bouquets look better than this kind of stick-them-to-a-block arrangement sets.

The back is rather sparse, so this is not optimal as a dining table centrepiece.

The flower designs are mostly recycled from earlier sets. The anemone is new, though, and looks great. From the parts viewpoint this isn't an issue, as all the larger flowers have plenty of recolours and rare pieces. Nonetheless, it makes the set slightly less interesting for the fans of the theme.

Conclusion

11513 Dark Flowers Arrangement has a great selection of recolours and rare parts. The price of US$59.99/ £54.99/ 59.99€/ AU$99.99 for 562 pieces and no minifigures is relatively average; probably a bit on the expensive side for LEGO Botanicals. I suppose that the impressive popularity of the theme among fresh adult collectors has enabled higher price tags and, concurrently, better revenue. This is natural, but makes the theme a bit less stellar for MOC builders. 

As a set design, it's not my cup of tea; I simply prefer the bouquets. Nonetheless, it's a decent deal as a parts pack, and it averts any serious shortcomings so will definitely find its fans.
