Today we take a look at the honey-loving children's favourite, Winnie The Pooh from LEGO® Disney™ set 43300. The happy bear comes with a large pot dripping with the nectar and buzzing with bees. Let's dive in and examine all the tasty new parts which are included.

New moulds

There are two new moulds included in the set:

• 2x Brick Arch 1x4x2⅓ Curved Top in White (6575545 | 5844)
• 2x Technic Brick Special 1x2 with Ball Socket in Red (6553183 | 7510)

Analysis of Brick Arch 1x4x2⅓ Curved Top

The new arch fills a hole in the LEGO® System between the 1x5 (5845, shown in red above) and 1x3 (5843, green) cousins. My green 1x3 is an older mould variant (6005) which leaves a bit of a gap between its top side radius and the 1x4's underside radius, but if you have the newer 92903 version then they match much better.

The outer radius of the new arch is also a good fit for the curve of Brick Round Corner, Curved 3x3x1 Quarter Circle (76797) when mounted sideways (righthand image above). 

However, it once again leaves a rather unsightly gap if placed over the curve of Brick Round Corner 3x3x2 Dome Top (88293, above left).

Another good fit is the inner radius of the much larger Brick Round Corner 6x6x2 (87559, above right).

At time of writing the new arch is now available in two other sets in two other colours: medium nougat in 43301 Toy Story Slinky Dog Bookends, and blue in 40921 Scaled-Up Blue Astronaut Minifigure (see Tim's review of the big blue LEGO spaceman).

Analysis of Technic Brick Special 1x2 with Ball Socket

Let's compare the new addition to some other sockets for ø10.2mm ball connectors.

At first glance, it looks like the new ball joint (7510, in red) has a longer reach for the ball joint side – but this is an optical illusion due to the fact that there is less material on the ball joint side of the studs than on the pinhole side. 

The position of the final socket it exactly the same as its 2x2 counterpart, the snappily-titled Technic Brick Special 2x2 with Ball Socket Wide and Axle Hole, No Arm Holes (67696, white). 

The 1x2 version's advantage over its 2x2 sibling is of course that it takes up half the width at the brick end – but character-building MOC experts tell me it's also a huge advantage that the new mould has a Technic pin hole on the side of the brick, 180° horizontally from the socket. As can be seen from the comparisons above, part 47326 (shown in black) has an axle hole at the same angle but the 2x2 brick version only has an axle hole set at 90° vertically to the socket. 

Recoloured elements

The vast majority of the hefty quantity of recolours here are in Flame Yellowish Orange/ Bright Light Orange, with just a handful in other colours.

The finished model

The large Pooh figure is constrained to a sitting position, with fixed shoulders and hips, and minimal articulation in the wrists and ankles. He comes with bees but has no knees! 

He's dressed in his characteristic red T-shirt and, ahem, no trousers. But fortunately, his modesty can be saved by strategic placement of the honeypot, as you can see in the introductory image for this article.

The eyebrows make for an expressive face which looks quite good head on, but I feel the sharp edges of some underlying bricks, which can be seen from a side view just behind the eyebrows, rather spoil his forehead's overall appearance. However, unlike his friend Piglet, it's nowhere near as bad as the abrupt shelf above the pig's nose, as the inclusion of some 2x2 curved corner slopes gives Pooh's nose a much smoother transition on the top side of his snout.

The honeypot has some nice details around the top, with oozing honey dripping out over the rim, and two brick-built bees buzzing about the sticky sweet goo. 

In a lovely surprise, the pot opens up to reveal another little scene where the Pooh and Eeyore minifigures can be stored. 

There aren't many details inside, with the main effect being achieved with two large stickers placed on top of panel pieces. It certainly isn't much of a play piece, but looks decent enough as a display model, which is its primary purpose. 

Pooh does appear to be in scale with his friend from 43305 Piglet's Birthday Fun and they make a pleasant pair of models to display together on your shelf.

Conclusion

At US$149.99/ £139.99/ 149.99€/ AU$229.99, the price is a little on the high side with a price per part of around 10-11p/¢ depending on currency. How much of that is due to "Disney tax" versus the inclusion of some quite large elements is not clear. 

The model feels like quite a substantial build once finished and I'm sure die-hard fans of A. A. Milne's beloved characters will enjoy having this piece to display on their shelves, but it offers limited poseability and play features. It's clever that all facial features are brick-built, but all the exclusive decorations are stickers.

There is a good variety of interesting new and rare parts in the set, most of them in bright light orange if that's what you're after. The potential offered by the new brick/ball joint mould will be interesting to see in MOCs – and I'm sure it will appear in other colours in due course, which widens its scope even further, but at time of writing it is limited to red.
