Review: 71052 Series 29 from LEGO® Minifigures

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

I'm excited to collaborate today with a new guest, Four Bricks Tall (@fourbrickstall on Instagram) – a wonderful photographer of minifigures (and even humans). She is also the community manager of Stud Shooters, a toy photography community on Reddit, and has regularly had her photographs published by The LEGO Group.

LEGO® Minifigures Series 29 has been dubbed a "classic" series and brings back a non-IP, non-all-costume lineup of 12 characters to collect. But within that classic moniker, we do get throwbacks to at least three beloved themes: LEGO® BIONICLE®, LEGO® NINJAGO® and LEGO® Monster Fighters! It's also worth noting the anniversaries behind two of those nods: 2026 marks 25 years of LEGO Bionicle and 15 years of LEGO Ninjago, which gives this series an extra layer of significance for longtime fans.

New moulds

The minifigures might be the stars, but some of these accessories are standouts in their own right, particularly the fish skeleton, clownfish, and sword bayonet.

  • Fish with Clownfish print in Orange (Design ID unknown)
  • Fish skeleton in White (8043)
That fish skeleton is going to find its way into many a build, for sure. Unfortunately, you only get one, with the Trash Monster.

  • Sword bayonet in Pearl Gold (8040)

  • Ball in White with print (Design ID unknown)
This new mould is a smooth version of the Minifigure Basketball head that Thomas examined in his review of 43008 Nike Dunk x LEGO® Set.

  • Tuba in Pearl Gold (8039)
The first LEGO tuba since the beloved LEGO® FABULAND® tuba (4434) of 1984! Similarly, the rear side of this instrument is hollow.

  • Cat, Sitting with print in Light Bluish Gray (8037)

  • Tahu mask in Red (8041)

  • Hair with tiara in Pearl Gold (96725)

  • Hair in Dark Orange with diving mask in Trans-Light Blue (116166)

  • Hair in Tan with hood in Black (116543)

New prints

We’ve also got a selection of printed tiles and round bricks, the most iconic being the LEGO Bionicle canister featuring Tahu.

These tiles are pretty fly.

Four Bricks Tall presents the minifigures of Series 29

Unicorn Elf

  • Unicorn in White with Mane and Tail in Pearl Gold (112958)
The unicorn is a new recolour of the mould first seen in LEGO® Creator 3-in-1 31175 Unicorn Castle with a lavender mane and tail, and fans will be glad to have access to it in a cheaper set. (On Pick a Brick, the original was listed for a hefty €5.69.). You can read more in Ben's review of the LEGO Unicorn Castle.

The Unicorn Elf is sure to be a chase figure for medieval fantasy fans. However, it’s a little disappointing since this is yet another character The LEGO Group has dubbed an "elf" without the characteristic pointed ears, the other being the Forest Elf from Series 22, who wore the acorn hat.

The new hair and tiara element is a fantastic piece that will level up any royal character. The colour combination of silver and gold against light green gives the figure an unmistakably regal quality.

Monster Hunter

A nod to one of the more recent classic themes, the Monster Hunter fits right in with the LEGO Monster Fighters franchise, which wrapped up with 13 sets back in 2012. She comes with cloth coattails and a striking new weapon: a flaming sword bayonet in pearl gold (8040).

The Monster Hunter's hair-and-hat piece appears to be a recolor of a LEGO® Friends part available in sand green, sand blue, and dark pink (79989).

The vampire on the Wanted poster she carries looks a lot like a character from the LEGO Monster Fighters set 31167 Haunted Mansion.

Mysterious Ronin

The second classic-theme nod in this series is the Mysterious Ronin, who is, not-so-mysteriously, Lloyd from LEGO Ninjago. He comes with an impressive new hair-and-hood element, along with a recolour of the Minifig Neckwear Shoulder Guard (41162) previously seen in pearl gold and pearl dark gray in multiple sets.

 Football Goalkeeper

With the World Cup just around the corner and the recent reveals of LEGO® Editions football sets, it’s fitting to see a goalkeeper in this lineup. We previously got a football referee with yellow and red cards in Series 24, so the goalkeeper is a natural companion.

Marine Biologist

Lots of underwater minifigures have come before, but the Marine Biologist is the first with a dual-moulded hair and diving mask combination. She comes with an outstanding new clownfish element and a printed tile.

NOTE: this minifigure doesn’t come with the white jumper tiles or the transparent angled bar in the photo. Those are there for posing and stability purposes only.

Tuba Player

An army builder of sorts, this Tuba Player will fit right in with the marching band twins in 11371 Shopping Street (although they don’t wear the same colours, sadly). The main attraction here is that gigantic new tuba element.

Robot T. rex

We've seen dinosaurs in past series of LEGO Minifigures, but none quite like this one. Rather than using the T. rex mask as a costume as in Series 24, this time it's been repurposed to create an actual robot dinosaur with some Horizon Zero Dawn vibes. The battery accessory adds a bit of colour contrast and matches the orange details on the minifigure.

Interestingly, the head piece is printed on both sides; one with an open aperture and the other with a closed aperture.

Chocolatier

A minifigure that's bound to show up in modular city layouts, the Chocolatier stands out with a recoloured chef's hat with hair (31895) in the new ochre yellow colour, and a dragon accessory in reddish brown that medieval builders will find useful as a wooden detail.

  • Baby Dragon with Folded Wings [PLAIN] in Reddish Brown (108202)
The baby dragon is a recolour of the red dragon with print (6483337)  that came with the Tiefling Sorcerer minifigure from the LEGO Minifigures 71047 Dungeons and Dragons Series in 2024.

  • Angled bar with 1 x 1 stud in White (65578
The piping bag is a mini-build consisting of a wand, a cone, and an angled bar with 1 x 1 stud recoloured in white. Luckily, we get two of those white angled bars.

Boba Cup Fan

LEGO has made a number of boba-related elements over the years, starting with the boba accessory from The LEGO Ninjago Movie minifigure that came with Shark General. That bright pink cup accessory with its dome lid would have been a perfect match here: instead, we get a cherry element.

Without the boba cup costume, a plain bright pink torso and legs form the body of the character.

LEGO Bionicle Cosplayer

The last of the classic theme figures is the ultimate throwback: a LEGO Bionicle Cosplayer wearing Tahu's mask. It's not Tahu himself, but just a costume.

The cosplayer has the iconic mask and container.

Cute Witch

This cat-obsessed Cute Witch comes with a new hair and hat element as well as a new cat element. She’s got little cat boots on thanks to dual-molded legs and a cat head print.

Her torso is the first minifigure body part in the new 2026 colour, blue violet (read more about 431 Blue Violet).

Trash Monster

The Trash Monster is probably the wackiest figure in the series.

If you're experiencing déjà vu, it's likely because its slime mask (77181) in lime appeared previously in the LEGO® VIDIYO™ and LEGO® DREAMZzz™ themes, but in translucent green. The Trash Monster's is the mould's first recolour.

He’s loaded with printing, including on both sides of the head underneath the mask. The rotting Jack-o'-lantern head will be excellent for Halloween MOCs, and that fish skeleton is likely to be the most-wanted accessory of the whole series. A second fish skeleton would have been preferable to the printed pizza tile that also comes with this minifigure.

Wrap-up

Series 29 is a solid lineup of minifigures and a welcome return to the classic formula where there is something for everyone. LEGO Bionicle and LEGO Ninjago fans have their chase minifigure, as do LEGO® Castle fans in a way, with the Unicorn Elf. The Monster Hunter will be a hit with fans who love the LEGO Monster Fighters theme, steampunk, or medieval fantasy like DnD.

Series 29 will be available from 1 May 2026 priced at US$4.99/ £3.49/ 3.99€/ AU$5.99 per blind box. A box of 12 will yield a complete set.

  1. Great review, but I did have one small question, is the Unicorn Elf's hair a new piece? It seems really similar to the Wonder Woman hairpiece Lego used for the character for quite a while.

    1. Oh huh, it does seem like it might be that same hairpiece.

  2. Nice review!

The fish skeleton piece is amazing and I hope it sees a lot of use. It's perfect for all sorts of settings and scenarios. The clown fish is very cute but not sure how likely it is to get recolors/new prints for other types of fish.

Tahu's mask is amazing and exceeds my expectations. I would love to see figs of other Toa with their own masks, but I'm somewhat doubtful of the likelihood of that—since each mask would need it's own mold it'd be harder to do as an easter egg in an unrelated set than something like different colors of classic space figs. Maybe we could at least see similar printed canisters appear elsewhere—and even if Lego doesn't make other masks, I wouldn't be surprised to see fans pick up the slack with things like 3D printing.

As for the figs themselves, I'm very impressed. Highlights for me are the Ninjago and Bionicle figs of course, as well as the monster hunter and trash monster. The Robot T-Rex also feels like it could pave the way for similar robot dinosaur figs in future series (what with all the dinosaur minifigure costumes there have been). But really the whole series looks solid, and I might try to pick them all up.

  3. The Hau looks like it's probably smaller than the pen bead version from back in the day, so that would be a new smallest entry on the list of all Hau pieces released. Would be fun to see the whole lineup, from this to the giant Lhikan version from the 2005 playset.

Also that guy needs to fix his costume, he's got the gear on the central axle off by 45 degrees!
