The new LEGO® Jurassic World Rebirth sets bring with them a whole group of new dinosaurs. I have already covered some of the bigger beasts in my reviews, and today I'm investigating a set with a cuter critter in it.
A new velociraptor and the minifigure-scale interpretation of Dolores the baby aquilops (a protoceratopsian) are available in 76972 Raptor Off-Road Escape. Will the cuteness of the moulded form exceed that of the buildable baby dino Dolores from set 76970? All the details follow, and let us know what you think in the comments.

New dinosaurs
- 1x Raptor with print in Dark Tan (6551205 | 110242), also in 76973 Raptor & Titanosaurus Tracking Mission
- 1x Animal Body Part, Dinosaur, Dilophosaurus / Gallimimus Lower Jaw with Teeth [Plain] in Dark Tan (6560177 | 49418) is a recolour
The new raptor is over-moulded (one colour component is moulded before another is moulded over it) and all the joints are fixed except the mandible. The raptor has a bar connection clip on its left hand claw and one stud on its back.
The previously available moulds that have ably depicted our raptors (37407, 98065, 98068, 98069, 98071, 98072 & 98165) have survived a total of 14 recolours since 2012, and some of those parts have been used for other dinosaurs too.
The new raptor is a better size in relationship to the minifigures, but is still a little too big. Furthermore, it has lost a lot of articulation.
- 1x - Aquilops (Baby Dolores) in Medium Nougat (6551196 | 7296)
Dolores is bigger than the baby dinosaur mould (37829) but it is smaller than the juvenile raptor mould (77862) that was introduced for Beta from Jurassic World Dominion. In comparative terms, this dinosaur is also a little bit big. I think I actually prefer slightly oversized dinosaurs, especially if it allows for greater detail and, where appropriate or possible, articulation.
This little dinosaur is really cute, I don't think it quite has the appeal of the brick-built interpretation of Dolores, but it's definitely one of the highlights of the set.
Recoloured and rare pieces
Recolour

I happen to think this is a really cool recolour and works well as a flare gun. It is also available in 76976 Spinosaurus & Quetzalcoatlus Air Mission, so it is nice to have another (and cheaper) source for the part.

The build
Raptor Off-Road Escape is a small set with only 3 bags. The first is given over to some scenic foliage.
A very simple technique creates the mechanism - peek a boo!
Conclusion
This is an appealing little set and there is much to like, particularly the new baby dinosaur that is exclusive to this set. The vehicle, another dino, some scenery and an action feature add quite a lot of value too. I'm just not sure it quite justifies the price.
This has 285 pieces including the two dinosaurs and two minifigures, and the price is US$39.99/ £29.99/ 34.99€/ AU$59.99. Overall, I feel like this set is slightly overpriced. In this case, it's not by all that much but it's a trend that many licensed sets suffer from, in varying degrees.
It's always nice to have more dinosaurs and two new ones do make this seem like an attractive smaller set. While the old velociraptor might have been oversized, changing to this new raptor feels like an unnecessary additional cost, especially as it has lost much of the articulation. The aquilops is really great, but even when it's exclusive and unlikely to appear on Pick-a-Brick, that's not quite enough.
Unfortunately, the new parts here are fairly limited too and that makes me less inclined to recommend the set, despite the good things it has to offer.
Ultimately this is likely to be one of those sets you might see in a sale and end up picking up on a whim. It's LEGO, it's Jurassic World, it's dinosaurs! If you're a fan of those things, as I suspect you are if you read this far, you probably won't even be all that unhappy having to pay full price for it.
