LEGO® 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System: The Reveal

Posted by Admin
Following a teaser posted to social media yesterday, The LEGO Group has now unveiled the latest product resulting from their partnership with Nintendo. Ben Davies (Professor Brickkeeper) reports.

71374 Nintendo Entertainment System will be launching on 1 August 2020 alongside the LEGO® Super Mario product range. While the kit will initially be exclusive to LEGO Brand Retail Stores and LEGO.com, it will be available at third party retailers starting in 2021. It will cost US$229.99/ £209.99.

We will be reviewing the set shortly but based on the initial reveal there will be no shortage of things to examine, so why not start now?

The LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System Set

The set includes 2646 elements and is comprised of three main components: the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which measures 20.8cm (8.1”) wide and 12.6cm (2.8”) tall, the NES Controller, which measures 12.6cm (4.9”) wide and 5.1cm (2”) deep, and a 1980s television set which measures 23.9cm (9.4”) wide and 22.6cm (8.9”) tall. A brick-built Super Mario Bros. Game Pak is also included.

Interestingly, the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System isn’t just a pretty set. When a crank on the side of the TV set is turned, the level stage scrolls and Mario moves up and down. In addition, the set is compatible with the LEGO Super Mario electronic figure, who can be mounted to the top of the television set to provide classic Super Mario Bros. sound effects and music.

The press release states “This highly collectible NES building set is part of a range of inspirational LEGO models designed for discerning hobbyists, as they look for their next immersive challenge.”

Just because the set is being marketed a collectable doesn’t mean there aren’t also a number of interesting new pieces included.

NEW ELEMENTS

The most notable of these is of course the Mario element, based on the plumber’s classic 8-bit appearance in 1985’s Super Mario Bros. Printing in Light Nougat and Dark Red is used to add additional pixelated detail to the Sand Yellow/ Dark Tan figure.

While not as obvious as the other new elements, this set also shows off a new 2x6 Tile, in Medium Stone Grey/ Light Bluish Gray, which is used for the Super Mario Bros. cartridge and NES controller. This element will simultaneously debut in 71369 Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle.

In addition to the new moulds, a number of new decorated elements have been introduced.

The NES controller alone features:

  3. I think even with all the decorated elements you listed you left a few out!

-Bright Green 1x3 tile with Bright Yellowish Green pixelated gradient (Warp Pipe top)
-Bright Green 2x2 tile with Bright Yellowish Green pixelated gradient (Warp Pipe bottom)

Love this set concept, especially given the potential for customization. Not all games would necessarily be suited to the wraparound screen-scroll this set comes standard with, but side-scrolling platformers like Kirby, Metroid, or Mega Man could certainly work.

  5. You missed the printed parts for the Mario Bros cart itself.

  6. @Jonathan Wilson: They're not printed but stickers, just like on the real thing.

  7. Hmmm, I wondered how that jumping function worked, but I assume it's just the plastic dome part being pushed up and down, depending on if it'll be hitting any bricks on the way...

Primitive, in that case, but it seems to work in context. (Although I don't understand how it's connected to the electronic Mariofig.)

    1. From some of the alternate pictures it appears that there are just SNOT brackets attached to the top of the scrolling screen with scannable tiles like the ones in the other sets. So you position those in line with the objects on the screen to activate the sound effects.

    2. I guess it's a dish, rather than a dome, when I think about it...

  8. Another recolor spotted: 27448 (2x2 tile with hole) in black, at the back of the TV

  9. Watching the speed build videos out now, I saw a 1 x 4 modified plate with pins on the bottom,I used to attach 1x plates to the chain links. Is this to this set?
