About the real Disney Main Street, U.S.A.

When you enter a Disney theme park, the first area you come across is a pastiche of an early 20th Century small-town American road lined with grand shops. Walt Disney included it in the original Disneyland in California and all subsequent Disneyland resorts include a version of it.

The first Main Street was constructed in the first Disneyland, in Anaheim, California which had opened in 1955. This was the only park designed by Walt Disney, and is the one this set appears to be based upon. Above you can see a 1990s photo of many of the shops featured in the set.

All worldwide versions of Main Street lead to the primary castle of the park, and include the main station of the internal railway system, but these features are not included in this model.

It's all about the length! The impressive frontage is more than 30 inches (78cm) wide.

To the left of the model is the rather fine Fire Station with its smart wagon and, within the upper floor, is a representation of the "secret" Disney Family apartment that Walt Disney included in the original construction of Disneyland California so he had somewhere practical to stay. The public cannot visit this, but there are some guided tours.

On a separate base is a long row of shops: the Disneyland Emporium, Souvenir Shop, Crystal Arcade and Jewellery Shop. It feels like a simpler series of Modular Buildings.

The interiors are well-appointed, although as they are mostly shops, the contents are perhaps not terribly variegated. They're accurate, though – there's certainly always a lot to buy at Disneyland!

They also provide ample opportunity for the inclusion of Disney references, to please the fans...

The aforementioned castle and train are available as models in the shop – LEGO models, maybe?

What gift shop is complete without Baby Grogu?

Another LEGO WALL-E!

No doubt by now you have also spotted the excellent range of minifigure torsos, so let's take a look at who is at Disney World today...

Minifigures

The set includes 16 minifigures!

There are 7 family members visiting, each wearing a wonderful T-shirt of a Disney IP. Of course, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are here too.

My favourites are the Dapper Dans, the Disney World barbershop quartet! There are more Main Street cast members too.

New moulds

It's all about the mouse ears!

Similar to the cat ears in LEGO® Gabby's Dollhouse, Mickey's iconic lugs get the 2x2 dome brick treatment in a new mould used to create balloons. They come in magenta, medium azure and lime green and it looks like you get two of each colour. I suppose these will be IP-locked, meaning they are unlikely to go on Pick a Brick?

Who wants to hold balloon mouse ears when you could be wearing them? Not one but two styles are provided: the classic all-black Mickey cap, and a smaller Minnie style with a bow which is an accessory with pin. The latter comes in three dual-toned colours: to me they look like bright pink with opalescent trans-pink bow, flat silver with opalescent trans-clear bow, and Minnie's classic black with red bow.

Strangely, no-one is wearing the Mickey ears cap in any of the official pictures. You can see above top left I overexposed one of the blurry pictures and there does seem to be an antistud in there for the head. However Elspeth made the good point that minifigures wearing the cap might look bald – perhaps only suitable for the Dapper Dans, but they have something much better to wear...

The barbershop quartet sport a new straw boater hat in tan. I can see these being popular as an architectural detail, although the imperfect circle may be a limitation.

Recolours

Let's start with three that I imagine will be quite popular: sand blue slopes.

  • Slope 75° 2 x 2 x 3 Double Convex (3685) in Sand Blue
  • Slope 75° 2 x 1 x 3 with Hollow Stud (4460b) in Sand Blue – the 30th colour of this piece
  • Slope 18° 2 x 1 x 2/3 (5404) in Sand Blue

The three upper floor canopies of the Fire Station provide us with dark red quarter domes in two sizes!
  • Brick Round Curved 1 x 1 x 1 Quarter Dome in Dark Red (5848)
  • Brick Round Corner, Curved 2 x 2 x 1 2/3 Quarter Dome with 1 Cutout in Dark Red (5906)

The wagon's mudguards are Wheel Arch 4 x 3 x 1⅔ (1846) recoloured to red.

I'm surprised that Container Box 2 x 2 x 2 - Top Opening (61780) has never appeared in white until now, given that the mould is 18 years old. Here they are used as recycling bins, with a sticker which is good news so these can be repurposed elsewhere.

Those are all the recoloured elements we have spotted so far – can you see any more? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Those Sand Green Lamp Posts are new recolors, I think. I expect that those will be popular in MOCs too, as they look like oxidized copper. And you get 3 of them, it seems.

  2. Nice analysis! As a non-parkgoer I'm kind of whatever about this set's subject matter and most of the mouse-ear molds it introduces. The straw boater hat is very nice, but I feel like it'd look even better if it had gotten a printed or dual-molded band instead of being uniformly tan.

Not a new recolor but I love the use of the broom end piece in clear for the large light/chandelier in the arcade. Between that and its use upside-down for a vase in the Friends flower shop set, that recolor from the aquarium set keeps getting cool and creative uses!

    1. Another feature I like (again, without requiring new recolors) is the hobby horse head on a horse hitching post outside the arcade! Less creative of a technique, but a perfect one for historic builds.

  3. the red mudguards aren't strictly new as they did show up in last years inside tour set but considering the rarity it might as well be new
