Set 40893, the Lego Grond GwP The Lord of the Rings

Upon its 1 June 2026 release, set 11377 Minas Tirith will face a dual siege: hoards of eager LEGO® fans, and the dark forces of Mordor, in the form of the 40893 Grond Gift with Purchase (GwP).

While falling somewhat short of Tolkien's described scale of a hundred feet, I was nevertheless excited to take a look at the set, and see whether it would manage to batter its way into my heart.

Minifigures

Despite the model being microscale, it is still includes two Orc minifigures. Both minifigures reuse elements from 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr (see Jonas' review of the LEGO Barad-Dûr set).

The sole exclusive element in the set is a new printed head for the orc in Olive Green (6609123). Indeed, aside from the minifigure elements, all parts in the set are relatively common and available in at least three other sets. Most pieces from set 40893 are available on LEGO® Pick a Brick.

Building experience

The build is divided across three numbered bags of elements. The wooden frame is assembled first. Notably, it features only four struts, rather than the six present in the film.

The battering ram is built next. While significantly compressed, the distinctive wolf head remains intact. The nose is constructed using the recently introduced Slope 30° 1 x 1 x 2/3 Double Corner (7826).

Finally, the battering ram is attached to the frame. Extra details are added to Grond, including fire spewing from its jaws, a curved tail, and decorative claws.

Completed model

The finished model compares favorably to its on-screen counterpart, though a number of compromises have been made as a result of the reduced scale. This is most obvious in the length of the battering ram and number of supporting struts.

Grond is scaled appropriately to the exterior gates of Minas Tirith, making it a fine companion set for display.

Although oriented towards adults, the set does feature a hidden play function. When the handles on the side of the frame are turned, the battering ram will move forward and back.

Conclusion

While a nice bonus if one already intends to purchase 11377 Minas Tirith at launch, I would caution against buying early specifically to get this companion set.

The sole exclusive element is a largely unremarkable minifigure head, for a figure that is out of scale when displayed with the rest of the set. If one intends on adding Grond to their display, I would just as soon suggest ordering the individual elements for the ram, rather than attempting to purchase the set on the aftermarket. Furthermore, by buying excess elements for the frame and ram, you could design a longer version.
