NEXOGON: Hive

Today, Li Li from MOC Recipes returns with another creation and beautiful geometric ideas using the new hexagonal LEGO® piece 27255 (Plate, Modified 6 x 6 Hexagonal with Pin Hole).

The Nexogon really reminds me of some sort of sci-fi beehive, so I created a large sci-fi colony.

The genesis of this model was that I wanted to explore ways to make tight beehive shapes with Nexogons. With the hinge plate piece (Design ID 73983), we can connect two Nexogons on their long sides.

Then expanding on this, we can create a large hexagon.

We can also expand this hexagon out a bit with this trick...

...and then expand again.

This expansion can be continued, but the result will become more and more fragile.

Here are a couple of other things that I came up with using these large hexagons.

  1. Great work on this! I love the futuristic look of the city you've created!

  2. Great job! I really like the idea of connecting the nexogons on the long side with hinge plates instead of clips.

Incidentally, I just noticed that Lego used at least one nexogon (probably two or more) to build the triangular structure of the upcoming Star Wars Freemakers ship "Tracker I" (http://brickset.com/sets/75185-1/Tracker-I). It certainly looks like they had non-Nexo Knights uses for this part (just like the 2x3 pentagonal shield) in mind from the beginning!

Wouldn't it be great to get it in multiple colors at some point... ;)

    1. Definitely exciting to see it appear in sets. The name TLG gave the nexogon - "Rotor" - is perhaps another indication they have other intentions for it.
