Parts review: 11381 Jaguar E-Type from LEGO® Icons

We've got the pedal to the metal on our review of LEGO® Icons set 11381 Jaguar E-Type, but first we're taking a quick detour to look at the parts included.

We're going green – British racing green – or rather, the closest LEGO® alternative, 141 Earth Green a.k.a. Dark Green. And you'll be green with envy too, because there's a lot of this lovely colour to covet!

LEGO Icons vehicles sets almost always introduce new moulds. These often include windscreens, wheel arches and wheel hubs, but other useful parts have made their debut too. For example, the "Porsche bows" (parts 77180 & 77182) that debuted in set 10295 Porsche 911 (see Victor's review of the LEGO 911), and then the "baby Porsche bows" (7205 & 7206) from last year's 10357 Shelby Cobra (see Zach's review of the LEGO Cobra).

These larger-scale vehicles also tend to introduce a lot of parts in one colour, and the Jaguar E-Type is no exception.

New moulds

First let's see what this year has to offer in terms of brand new shapes.

Let's examine each in turn.

Windscreen 12 x 3 x 3 (8092)

This new 12-module-wide windscreen has been introduced specially for the E-Type. Being packed in a separate protective bag is now pretty much a minimum expectation, but I am happy to see that expectation continuing to be met. 

The LEGO interpretation of the E-Type's windscreen may not be as curved as the actual windscreen, but this part fits very nicely with existing elements.

Interestingly, the anti-stud on the curved corner features the same geometry as found in the updated mould for 2x2 macaroni tiles (7836) that Elspeth noted in her review of 21366 Floating Sea Otters.

It's a lovely, clean curved taper from a 1-module radius at the open top to a 2-module radius at the foot.

Wheel arch 2 x 8 x ⅔ (8386)

I feel like this new wheel arch defies established classification conventions, because it doesn't seem like an arch in the traditional sense of a brick arch. It doesn't seem like a tile, plate or panel either, although in my opinion, a panel would seem the most appropriate category as it is quite thin-walled in cross-section.

However, a similar wheel arch sized 4x10 modules (80567) was introduced for the 10304 Chevrolet Camaro in 2022, and has since only appeared once again, in 71799 Ninjago City Markets. So despite my reservations over the classification, I have to admit that the intended usage of this part probably should dictate its taxonomy.

This new wheel arch, then, measures 2x8 modules and two plates deep. It is very thin along the whole length of the arch, like a panel. 

Even more unusually, that arch spans a 1x7 recess, creating a shallow curve that doesn't appear to have a match with curved slope elements.

Wheel 30 x 14 (8093)

The iconic wire spoked wheel hubs of the E-Type are nicely depicted here. It's a pattern that is very similar to the hub inserts (37195) that were introduced for the Aston Martin DB5 back in 2018. Ironically, that part has only subsequently been used for botanical and architectural details. 

I imagine this new wheel hub was needed for the Jaguar because of the desire for a more accurate-looking narrow depth tyre. Part 56904 is the existing 30mm D. 14mm hub, and the aforementioned 37195 spoke insert sits proud of the rim on those hubs.

The possibilities presented by that older hub piece were well explored by Sarah Beyer and Ralf Langer  in a neat feature article back in the heady days of experimentation in our fabulous Parts Festivals.

New LEGO Icons cars do seem to need new wheel hubs; this seems virtually a rule by now and I can see it does help with creating an authentic look for a car, especially as the original Dunlop 72 spoke wire wheels are fairly synonymous with the E-Type.

Not wanting to break the long held tradition here at New Elementary of "jamming things into holes to see if they fit", I tried to find things that would hold or stay in the gaps between the "wires" of the wheel hub.

Unfortunately, the pentagonal diamond shaped hole is just smaller than a 3.18mm bar. After some trial and error with minifigure swords and other utensils however, I found that the ice skate blade (93555) actually clipped into place quite nicely. Pleasingly they don't fall out either but can only be placed in each alternate hole owing to their stud placement.

Both sides of the hub can accommodate the ice skate, so you can fill each hole if you alternate the side the ice skate is pushed in (top right & bottom middle). It is possible for each hole to accept an ice skate as shown above bottom right, but the ice skates with their studs facing inward are loose and fall out when tipped. It's not possible to arrange them all on the outer side of the wheel because the moulding for the locking nut gets in the way for two of the seven holes.

A quick hunt for parts that might fill the remaining void left by those skate blades revealed that a Technic Driving Ring Extension (35186) would indeed fit and hold the whole assembly together with the aid of a Technic axle 3L with stud (6587).

This has the look of a jet engine air intake or turbine of some kind and is just awaiting the rest of an aircraft or spaceship to go with it!

The soft top convertible canopy is delivered in a Manila envelope.

An interesting final note to make; this is the first time I have seen a family mould delivered in a paper based bag.

Value and sneak peek

• Price: £129.99 ($139.99 / €139.99 / AU$249.99)

At £129 it's a great and groovy green group of elements that feels like incredible value. Like 77985 Dinosaur Fossils: Triceratops, this set certainly delivers in the parts department! (See my review of the LEGO Trike fossil set.)

Not since the 10242 MINI Cooper – another 1960s icon of British motoring history – have we been treated to so much dark green in a set. (See Tim's review of the LEGO Mini from the early years of this blog.)

It's more than just the quantity though: many of the parts are recolours, and a good group of those are newish moulds too. Others feel like basic universal legacy parts, so I'm sure there are elements here that fans have actually been waiting a long time for to complete MOCs. Quite a few of the rare parts are nice to have appearing again as well.

Conclusion

Just to whet your appetite for the upcoming build review, here's a pic of the finished set. It's a great looking set and depicts the E-Type really well. We'll be publishing the full review in the next couple of days.

However, ignoring the finished model for the purposes of concluding this parts spotlight, and judging this set on its parts alone, it's simply great value. 1673 pieces for £129.99 and a PPG of 7.4p make this an easy recommendation to justify.

There are three new moulds and there may be a limit to the uses of the windscreen and the wheel arches, but the wheel hubs surprised me, simply by offering those illegal connections for my jet engine tablescrap. Even if wheels do very, very often make a good starting point for a spaceship engine, I felt there was something unusually neat about this!

It feels a little silly to reiterate this, but there's a lot of new parts in dark green. Introducing such a healthy batch of new parts in one colour is always appealing to me in a set, and by featuring a lot of rarer parts in that same colour too, it becomes a parts pack: worth considering buying just for the parts.

That's a tipping point for me, where the volume of newer parts in a limited palette are available for a reasonable price, and the build (irrespective of the experience or the resultant model) becomes a bonus and something I will want to buy even if the subject matter isn't necessarily in my usual wheelhouse of interests.

The Jaguar E-Type is available to buy from August 1 but I think it's potentially worth a pre-order to avoid disappointment, if you're keen on green.
