Review: 11382 Hubble Space Telescope from LEGO® Icons

The Hubble Space Telescope is almost as cool as LEGO® sets, so combining the two is a brilliant idea. On Saturday 1 August 2026, LEGO® Icons set 11382 Hubble Space Telescope is available: a detailed, realistic model both inside and out, and it's minifigure-scale! Let's take a peep.

New foil

There are no new moulds in the set, but there is a new decorated plastic film.

  • Foil Sheet, Reflective, 2 Solar Arrays in Dark Blue (6594450)
The perforated silver film includes two identical solar arrays, each measuring 180 x 67 mm (7.1 x 2.6 inches). There are 100 solar panels and a central support printed on each. That dark blue grille pattern could be useful in architectural models.



The reverse side is unprinted, which will be visible from some angles when displayed, but you can rotate the panels as you wish to minimise this for display.

Recolours

Although the craft is predominantly grey, there's only one piece that has been recoloured in that shade.

Well I wasn't expecting guns and bucket handles in a flying telescope, and I'm surprised that neither of these pieces has come in these colours before! Both come with a spare (not pictured).

The large grey curve gets a NASA / ESA sticker applied to it, although I found a way around that to keep my piece pristine.

I am already seeing excitement online for the white neck bracket and black shield. This is only the second opaque colouring of the shield; the first being the light bluish grey one in 10356 Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D (see Kevin's review of the LEGO TNG Enterprise).

Decorations

The set has a mixture of printed and stickered parts.


Panel 1 x 4 x 3 [Side Supports / Hollow Studs] in Trans-Clear with:
  • The Butterfly Nebula print (6660657)
  • Whirlpool Galaxy print (6660655)
  • Pillars of Creation print (6660656)
What Hubble Telescope set would be complete without some Hubble Telescope Deep Field images? These three beautiful panels are incorporated into the stand, but I might steal them to place into a Classic Space set like 6970 Beta I Command Base, or the contemporary 40786 Micro Command Centre.

The other printed piece is attached to the white neck bracket to form the astronaut's portable life support system.



The sticker sheet includes the plaque for the stand, and various details for the craft.

Minifigure

All parts comprising the astronaut minifigure are new, with the exception of the metallic gold visor (89159, 53391).

  • 1x Minifig Head in White with Smiling Astronaut In Spacesuit print (6594611)
  • 1x Torso in White with (6618623)
  • 1x Legs with print in White (6594613)
This version of the helmet introduced in 2019 can be considered new because this is the first time it has come in a single colour. Most previous examples have colour on the back, while the Space Police Guy from LEGO Minifigures 71029 Series 21 had a star printed on the front.

Parts of interest

Only one other piece in the set could be considered rare.

I was surprised this mould was introduced in 2015 and has only appeared in 5 sets since then, in any colour.


Several pieces come in high quantities, and I was especially taken by the beauty of all these clear SNOT bricks:

  • 20x Brick Special 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 with 8 Studs on 3 Sides in Black (6308883 | 67329) which is the highest in a LEGO product, although there are 24 in 910058 Sequoia Tree Trail, a BrickLink Designer Program product
  • 12x Brick Special 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 with 8 Studs on 2 Sides in Trans-Clear (6411394 | 80796), which is also the highest yet
 Other notably high quantities, not pictured because they are not records, include:
  • 102x Slope Curved 3 x 2 No Studs in Light Bluish Gray (6132207 | 24309), almost reaching the 117 in set 75331 The Razor Crest (see Thomas review of the 2022 UCS LEGO Razor Crest)
  • 32x Plate Special 1 x 2 [Side Handle Closed Ends] in Pearl Gold (4585493 | 48336); there were 37 in 70810 MetalBeard's Sea Cow

The build


The instructions begin with beautiful spreads discussing the real telescope and its imagery, including a brief timeline and this cool exploded view of its components. The designers have gone to some lengths to recreate the real innards in LEGO bricks!
 


We commence with a handsome stand that includes the stickered plaque and the three printed windows. The knob below the Whirlpool Galaxy is a handle to remove the whole side containing the windows so you can inspect the Deep Field images more closely, and hold them up to the light.

I don't like the grey plates though and will swap these out to black. I can't imagine what they are meant to represent, if anything?




The reverse is even worse with a glaring yellow plate visible. This is only a problem if you display the model in the middle of a room, I guess. It does make sense that the back is open though, to allow light in to make the Deep Field images look good.



Building the vessel commences at the aft section, and pretty soon you construct these four fellas who initially reminded me of those air dancers you see advertising car-related businesses, but then the idea took hold that they are spooky ghosts 👻


The ghosts in the machine seem to be the support structures surrounding the axial scientific instrument module, neatly represented by medium nougat angled panels. 

As far as I can gather, all of that black, red and yellow brick is just the necessary LEGO structure to support construction, rather than representing the actual craft interior structure.

Surprisingly, the layer on top (above right) is attached piece by piece, rather than being a sub-model attached as a whole. I suspected this might be because it would be cumbersome to attach as a whole, and pulled it off to prove my point. Unfortunately, I was right.

Construction continues with the gyroscopes (white bucket handles), fine guidance sensors (perfectly represented by white 'telephone' bows), the primary mirror (a transparent satellite dish) and the central baffle (a stack of small dark grey dishes).

I was really impressed by the strength of this right-angled sub-build, used twice to create an internal cubic structure that supports the model on its stand. It relies not only on SNOT bricks and LEGO Technic axles for strength but also 2L dark grey bars, held in place by those green 'D-SNOT' bricks. This thing ain't buckling in the vacuum of space.


As we work towards the fore, sections of the exterior baffle are applied. There certainly is repetition and these are not the most thrilling sections to build, but there was actually less repetition here than I expected, as sometimes these sections are part of the main build and sometimes sub-models to be applied to the sides. It's not a simple case of "build four identical curved sides and stick them on".

You can also see the secondary mirror in the above picture; seemingly floating in the centre thanks to some gold ring pop pieces (5264), a delightfully delicate connection.


We literally cap off the build with the aperture door; a deeply satisfying task if you love curved tiles as much as me, which of course you do. 



At this point we are invited to place the model on the stand, but in the reverse position with the aft raised, in order to add all the various appendages and the greebling. I employed the services of the astronaut for this task, with his trusty Space Tool. Gotta secure those ghosts inside.

With a flip on the stand, the model is complete.

 

Completed model


This is a fine, large beast of a model, measuring 15 in. (38 cm) long with the aperture door open like so, and weighing over 2 pounds (925g) without the stand. 




You can see the secondary mirror by peering in the aperture door.




All of the hard work you put into creating the internal instrumentation is not wasted: two panels can be removed to reveal the secondary mirror in one, and the larger shows the primary mirror/central baffle and the axial module (and ghosts).

The smaller panel comes off all too easily. It seems every time I take the model off the stand, either the panel goes flying away into space, or I knock off a piece of essential scientific equipment. 
 



The larger panel is snug, though, cleverly nestling the ovoid shields by the projecting wedge plates. And upside down, it looks like a surprised cartoon character.
 


With a little LED, you can make this a fantastic night light!

Conclusion

Obviously it would be quite dull to just build a big grey tube with some greebles, so I am glad this model includes representations of all the major internal instrumentation, and that you can still show off the insides once the model is complete. It feels educational and entertaining to construct.


I would have appreciated callout explanations in the instructions of what each item does, as you complete it. There are a few callouts, but they are more general explanations of Hubble's functions.

In terms of new elements, the Deep Field image windows and the minifigure are absolutely wonderful. For general building parts, there isn't much to recommend it, though. The foils are cool, and what few recolours there are certainly are excellent... but naturally all we wanted was for the whole thing to be cast in metallic silver, not light bluish grey. That's completely unrealistic, of course.

It leads us neatly onto value though. US$139.99/ £119.99/ 129.99€ for 1252 pieces and a weight of 1.553 kg gives us:
  • a price per piece of 11.2¢/ 9.6 pence/ 10.4¢
  • a price per gram of 9.0¢/ 7.7p/ 8.4¢

That's a whole lot better than 11389 Project Hail Mary (see Kev's review of the LEGO Hail Mary spaceship) for example but it feels a tad higher than I'd like for a LEGO Icons set. Presumably there was a licence to pay with NASA/ESA, but the same is true of 11381 Jaguar E-Type, which is another LEGO Icons set releasing on the same day for the same price (in US dollars; other currencies vary). The Jag works out at US 7.9¢ per gram, and a much lower 8.4¢ per piece, but I expected it would be pricier than the telescope. Read more in Kev's review of the LEGO Icons Jaguar.


If you are not interested in giant space telescopes, this will be a dull and mysterious build. The joy is in seeing all the instruments slowly pile up; if you don't care what those all are and what they do, it just seems like a very strangely built, dense model!

For real space fans however, it looks super cool once completed, and being minifigure scale gives the craft's size a real purpose. Visitors will enjoy seeing the model; just remember to remove the small panel before you take the model off the stand.

The whole thing in drum-lacquered silver isn't a reasonable expectation, but like the UCS Mandalorian N-1 I think they could have made certain parts of it silver without having it look bad or impacting the price too much. Maybe even just the aperture door. In any case I'll probably wait for a sale.

  2. The helmet is dual-molded so in this case they have just put white into both steps instead of multiple colors.

  3. This is actually the third opaque recoloring of the Shield Ovoid with Grip (92747, 30947, 5728) as it also appears in light aqua in 31220 Claude Monet - Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies. I know this because I built that stunningly lovely set myself. :-)
