The next LEGO® Ideas set takes us back to nature: 21366 Floating Sea Otters is available to pre-order now and releases from 1 March 2026.
With a mother otter floating on her back, and the option to cradle her baby or prioritise a snack over being maternal. Yes that is a otter pup and not a chunky otter with a large belly. Let's see if this set otters something for New Elementary readers...

| by Maximilian Lambrecht (HisBrickMaterials) |
The original submission on the LEGO® Ideas platform was created by fan designer Maximilian Lambrecht, a visual effects artist from Germany.
Nature is my single most surprising, spectacular and grounding source of inspiration! I particularly love otters, and for this model I watched documentaries and went to the local zoo, drawing outlines and sketches for the LEGO version.
– Maximilian Lambrecht
There have been a few changes made to the original submission, as noted in the instruction booklet:
We decided to enhance its realistic appearance while keeping the cute factor, of course, so we included a sleeping otter pup that lies on its mother's belly [...] The wet body fur is often a very dark brown and the head a bit lighter, so we have abstracted the colours to enhance the building experience.

Updated mould
- 18x Tile 2 x 2 Curved, Macaroni, Center Anti-Stud in Trans-Light Blue (6573821 | 7836)
The updated 2 x 2 curved macaroni tile (7836, in trans-light blue) differs from the original 2x2 curved macaroni tile (27925, shown in light aqua) as it has a central anti-stud on the underside. This allows the macaroni tile to be positioned centrally using a single stud connection; the new mould can be aligned on the 2x2 jumper plates as shown in the image above.
Comparing the updated mould shows that there are no negatives as it still connects across a 2x2 stud area, and the 1x1 quarter tile can be placed in the inner curve without issue. It simply has the traditional tube, just like any regular 2x2 piece.
The updated mould has only appeared in trans-light blue so far, and this is the first unprinted instance. The tiles were printed in LEGO® Speed Champions set 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future earlier this year, and no other colours have been found in sets as yet.

That final image is cruel but hilarious.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thoughtful review.
I will want to build this at some point, but I will wait for a bargain (as with the kingfisher bird).
According to a review elsewhere, the compass "is a reference to the fan designer’s handle – His Brick Materials, which is in turn a reference to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials books, which features The Golden Compass."
