Review & MOCs: 77239 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Super Car from LEGO® Speed Champions

Posted by Tom Loftus

What does a frog, a beetle and Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van all have in common? Set 77239 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Super Car from LEGO® Speed Champions, apparently! Read on for my review of the set and MOCs inspired by some of its parts.

The parts

Baby Porsche bows

The two new moulds in the set come as a pair, and are printed:
  • 1 x Slope Curved 3 x 2 Bevelled with Stud Notch Left with Black Headlight print in Bright Light Orange (6548305 | 6822)
  • 1 x Slope Curved 3 x 2 Bevelled with Stud Notch Right with Black Headlight print in Bright Light Orange (6548306 | 6823)
Considering they were swiftly reused for Gizmo's lower lip, these bows definitely aren't too specialised – see Eero's review of set 21361 Gremlins - Gizmo for proof. They are, however, one of many recent shapely moulds that seem to be coming thick and fast.

Their geometry fits seamlessly with existing parts, without a stud in sight.

The stepped underside is reminiscent of other recent-ish additions in the curved slope family such as this 3 x 2 curved slope with stud notch (80177 & 80178).

As our nickname suggests, these baby bows are clear descedents of a New E favourite, the "Porsche bow" (77180 & 77182, shown above in lime green). That also makes them a sibling of the "Shelby bow" (7205 & 7206, shown in dark blue) – for more, see Zach's review of 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C.

And since we're assigning arbitrary family titles, here are some cousins! Each has the common trait of a 2-module radius curved edge with stud notch.

Now for a sillier comparison:

Placing the two slopes directly side-by-side transforms them from headlights into a cute pair of eyes which reminded me of the printed shoulder cover (6434231 | 21560) from 71456 Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van, reviewed back in 2023 by Eero.

I had planned to play off that similarity and make a turtle or a lizard, but the eyes were looking more amphibious than reptilian to me...

MOCs using LEGO parts 6822 and 6823

...so naturally I had to use them for a frog!

I thought I'd have to source a 4x4 dome in bright light orange but I'm glad I opted to stick with the yellow placeholder, I think it captures the transparency of a frog's inflated vocal sac better. (Oh, if only there was a prize for the most random sentence in a blog post).

Thomas Jenkins was kind enough to supply images of his delightful use of the printed slopes too: a beetle with intricate shell markings – too cute!

Recolours

Thanks to 77239 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Super Car, three elements appear in bright light orange for the first time:

  • 2 x Panel 1 x 2 x 1 [Rounded Corners] (6553404 | 26169)
  • 2 x Plate Special 1 x 1 with Clip Vertical [Thick Open O Clip] (6559509 | 44860)
  • 2 x Wheel Arch, Mudguard 4 x 2 1/2 x 1 (6551419 | 28579)

Rare parts

Released simultaneously in 77238 Lamborghini Revuelto & Huracan STO, these intricate hub-caps are new in black:

  • 4 x Wheel Covers 5 Spoke, No Rim in Black (6825a | 6508995)
  • 4 x Wheel Covers 9 Spoke, No Rim in Black (6825b | 6508995)
They were initially introduced in flat silver, in 77241 2 Fast 2 Furious Honda S2000.

Here's a few more lesser-seen elements, each appearing in 2 other sets or less:

  • 2 x Wheel Arch, Mudguard 4 x 2 x 2 1/2 (6513762 | 3387) - 1 other set
  • 2 x Tile 1 x 2 with Stud Notch Left (6510136 | 5091) and Right (6510149 | 5092) - 2 other sets
  • 4 x Slope Curved 2 x 1 No Studs [1/2 Bow] in Trans-Black (6542245 | 3593) - In 1 other set

Decorations

An eclectic range of printed parts join the new 2 x 3 bows we met earlier. In fact, there's only one standard tile among them:

  • 2 x Slope Curved 1 x 6 with Black Oval on both sides print in Bright Light Orange (6563949 | 114478)
  • 1 x Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Porsche Shield print in Bright Light Orange (6548307 | 113661)
  • 1 x Tile 2 x 4 with Black Air Vent print in Bright Light Orange (6554268 | 114265)
  • 1 x Plate Special 1 x 3 with 2 Studs with Groove and Inside Stud Holder (Jumper) with Silver 'PORSCHE' print in Dark Red (6548308 | 113662)
  • 1 x Windscreen 6 x 6 x 1 2/3 with Bright Light Orange Stripes print in Trans-Black (6554267 | 114264)

The registration of my headlights and the ovals on my 1x6 slopes are slightly off but thankfully, the difference is negligible on the finished model for the most part. Plus, because the 1x6 slopes are printed on both sides, I was able to select the best print available for the left and right sides of the car.

The remaining decorations are achieved with a surprisingly small sheet of stickers; just 15.

Minifigure

An exclusive Porsche-branded torso print (6565011) and a rarely-seen hair piece in tan (6551879 | 2631) can be found on the driver.

The build

Most of the car is built in sub-assemblies that feel unusually large compared to the LEGO Speed Champions norm. We've noticed upcoming sets from the line (77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future and 77255 Lightning McQueen) are marketed as 'Build Together' sets, meaning 2 people can build the model at a time with the app. Perhaps the design team had that format in mind when they took this more modular approach?

The C-pillar / rear window assembly is the most satisfying sub-model to add to the main build. It's locked in place at an angle, and partially covered by two sets of panel and clip combinations.

Towards the front there's a bit of 'bracket gymnastics' to cover some upside-down construction. Also note the clever use of a 1x4½ mudguard (28960, 50947) for the dashboard.

Completed model

In terms of shaping, the only area that feels like it suffered from compromise is the nose; that 1-module thick band of bright light orange above the grill has a sense of verticality that's tough to ignore. Overall though, it's about as accurate as you could expect from a LEGO Speed Champions set and was a joy to see come together step by step.

Off-setting the front and rear wheels by a plate allows the car to be exceptionally low-riding, with scarcely a half plate between the rear bumper and the ground. LEGO Speed Champions cars with a forward rake tend to look a little awkward to my eyes, but the difference in fender style front and back really sells the illusion here.

The side windows are the highlight of the set for me. Up close, the fractionally misaligned prints can detract from the effect, but from even a short distance away, it's seamless.

While I enjoyed the build of 77237 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Sports Car more, I find this set more interesting to look at once complete.

  1. Isn't the "beetle" supposed to be a ladybird/ ladybug?

  2. Why not using the black leftovers from the stickers to fill the gaps on the slope? Shouldn't it be even legal?
