Review: 42661 Costume Party & 42674 Comic Book Game Store from LEGO® Friends

The LEGO® Friends June 2025 wave (August in North America) brings us two sets with a common theme: elaborate outfits. Set 42661 Costume Party with Unicorn & Fairy has the friends partying in fairytale costumes, while in 42674 Comic Book and Game Store they cosplay as their favorite comic book characters.

New molds

Both sets share the same new molds, so I’ll show these first before investigating the individual sets.

Headwear Accessory Antenna (6899)

• Headwear Accessory Antenna in Black (6546170 | 6899), found 1x + 2 spare in set 42661 Unicorn and Fairy Costume Party

A great way to add icicles to a winter scene!

In my overview of all new elements found in the LEGO Friends June 2025 wave, I incorrectly listed this tiny part as a recolor of Creature Body Part, Horn Unicorn (89522), seen above center. 

Unlike the bar connection of the unicorn horn, the new horn has a small pin at the underside. While the swirl in both horns is similar, the new version is shorter; more closely matching the height of Creature Body Part, Horn / Snowman Carrot Nose (1756) seen above left, found in LEGO® Minifigures 71034 Series 23 – see more details on the carrot in our review of Series 23.

Decorated elements

Periwinkle has painted their mane, resulting in Animal, Horse with Raised Leg with Dark Pink Mane, Tale, Dark Azure Eyes print in White (6543255 | 113162). 

Meanwhile, Churro the cat is dressed up as a magician: Animal, Cat, Chubby with Olive Green Eyes, Orange Fur, Black Mustache print in White (6537804 | 112381).

The other decorations are handled by a tiny sticker sheet on reflective silver foil.

Mini-dolls

The main attraction in this set are the mini-dolls, showing off their great outfits.

Paisley looks magical dressed up as a fairy:

The model

With all these great mini-dolls, the accompanying model feels a bit like it's only there to justify the figures. Still, with an eye-popping color scheme, the scene looks great. Periwinkle is dressed as a unicorn, there's a photobooth with accessories, a table with a slushie dispenser, and another table with some sweet snacks.

In the center, Bunny Leo lays down some beats from his groovy decks.

Overall, this is a cute set where the mini-dolls steal the spotlight, with the model itself as a sort of filler, similar to LEGO® Star Wars battle packs. The antenna and horn are useful as new molds, and this is the cheapest set so far to contain them.

42674 Comic Book and Game Store

The thing I like the most about comic-cons are the visitors. They can spend ages crafting their costumes and turn themselves into their favorite characters, be it from comics, movies, games or any other media. I’m always amazed by the artistry and love they put into their work, and I am as envious of their skills as I am of great MOC designers. 

In 42674 Comic Book and Game Store, four friends come together in their cosplay for a meeting at their favorite location: a comic book store with a gaming room, next door to a slushie shop.

• 1 x Shield Triangular with Spiked Top with print in Pearl Gold (6537800 | 112377). This shield, first seen in 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1, shows Moon Pegasus from Liann and Nova’s favorite comic, according to the show
• 1 x Costume / Mask, Robot with Chest Plate with print in Dark Turquoise (6543136 | 112973) is the second appearance of this mold since its introduction in LEGO Minifigures Series 23.

Two characters from the comic books come in plushie form:

• 1 x Pillow Plush Toy with print in Lime (6523518 | 111012)
• 1 x Pillow Plush Toy with print in White (6543142 | 112976)

The other decorations are handled by an extensive sticker sheet. It is pretty big, but it adds a lot of storytelling to the set. 

Stickers 1, 2, 10 and 31 are comic books, including Moon Pegasus. Stickers 19, 20, 21 and 22 are a full series of comics, seemingly revolving around an alien invasion, perhaps showing the lime plushie as either a baddie or a Stitch type of character?

Sticker 13 appears to be a box of 5974 Galactic Enforcer, while sticker 15 shows 41178 The Dragon Sanctuary. 

I’m sure the tabletop games seen in stickers 24 and 25 also hide some references, but I was unable to decode them. And might the 1985 in sticker 35 be a reference to one of the designers?

Mini-dolls

Like in the other set in this article, the mini-dolls are amazing.

Nova is crossing the final frontier in a Classic Space suit!

The model

We start with the slushie shop, where we find a functioning token dispenser. The interior is a bit bare, with just a slushie wall and a small counter. On top of the shop the friends can enjoy their cold beverage with a view.

The token dispenser has a simple yet effective design. Five of the six holes on the pulley wheel are blocked by a fixed round tile, leaving one space free for a token to fall into and travel around to fall into the bin underneath. 

On to the store, where on the ground floor we find the comic book section, packed with comics and other merchandise. The recently introduced tile 1x2 with cut corner is put to great use alongside triangle tiles to create a clever floor decoration of a comic-style KAPOW!

Above is a gaming area, with 2 computers and an arcade game. The stickers on the curved wall show stacks of tabletop games, but there isn’t a table to put them on top of.

As true gamers, the floor is littered with cans, and some crushed ones can be found in the bin. Since this is a set aimed at children, there is no sign of a Scarlet Bovine – I'll assume they contain healthy freshly squeezed fruit juice. 

There is a wad of gum stuck underneath the table. Even the gas pedals for the racing game are included.

The angled door features a purple sign above it, secured by a white shield clipped to a brick. One floor higher, the facade is held in place by a tan plate with bar stuck into the hole of a white inverted 1x3 tile. 

Underneath the dome at the top, a treasure map is hidden. 

Over the years, we’ve seen many brick-built mascots and store signs, and in this set the lineup is extended with cute game controller signage.

The finished build looks great, with a popping color scheme that feels all over the place, but does work. It might be my geek side talking, but this set clicks just right. The slushie store is a bit bare, but still looks good, and the token dispenser makes up for the lack of details in the store. 

The set comes with a nice amount of recolors and minifigure/mini-doll accessories, making it an interesting parts pack.

Meanwhile, the comic book store is brimming with items, and the gaming floor has great builds with little details befitting the subject matter. The stickers are plentiful, but add to the look. All in all, this is probably my favorite set in this wave of LEGO Friends.
