It's rare to see a LEGO Speed Champions driver with an accessory besides a helmet, so the scarf for Land Rover Larry (unofficial name) is a lovely touch. Let's assume it's a fashion choice and not because the air-con in Larry's fancy truck has conked out.
Building the LEGO Jaguar Project 7
The techniques in the Jaguar live up to the theme's reputation for delivering engaging build experiences. Some intricate SNOT work is used for the tail with a 1x2 panel nestled behind the licence plate. Moving to the midsection, the driver's seat cleverly uses the jumped anti-stud on the underside of a 2 x 2 curved slope with 27° double wedge – see my analysis of part 7821 here.
The front of the car has the majority of the fun stuff, most notably the spindly chain of parts used to attach the 1 x 2 tiles with 45° cuts on each side of the nose.
Building the LEGO Land Rover Defender
Starting with a sizable chassis, the build for the Defender is decidedly more substantial and has some nice techniques like the pair of 3 x 6 Lattice Modules with 4 Studs (23444) for the running boards.
Progress continues steadily with fairly standard SNOT techniques until the later stages where the finer details are added like the gorgeous transparent 1 x 1 Round Plates with Vertical Bars (3661) for the headlight clusters.
Here's the completed model without stickers. Like the Jaguar, they definitely feel optional rather than essential.
With this clear view of the rear, we can appreciate the tail lights which use another masking technique. Minifigure neck brackets (42446) are employed so that just the studs of the transparent red, orange and clear plates below are visible.
The finished Land Rover Defender is monstrous compared to most other LEGO Speed Champions cars, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, a bit of variety in the line-up is welcome. Two minifigures can sit side-by-side in the front while the rear has a pretend row of seats that can't accommodate figures, but could be used for stowing accessories – Larry's scarf, perhaps?
I'm not completely convinced by the shaping of the front end. The prominent curves, depth and verticality of the centre grill don't gel with the oblongness of how I expect a Land Rover snout to look. Fortunately, the rest of the vehicle is suitably rectangular, and the brick-built roll cage goes some way to establish the rugged Land Rover look I was missing.
One final nit-pick I have are the orange highlights. The accents on the stickers appear to be regular orange, meanwhile the roof uses reddish orange bricks. However, since the two aren't directly next to each other, it's a forgivable discrepancy.
Verdict
The double pack format continues to work well for allowing an uneven distribution of parts between two vehicles that probably wouldn't be viable as standalone sets. The obvious downside is that, if you're only interested in one of these models, you can't just buy the one you like which is especially problematic for this set as it includes two different car brands, each with differing appeal. Not to mention the price that has crept up yet again for some regions: US$59.99 / £44.99 / €54.99 / AUS$79.99.
I'd like to see a more exciting colour used for the bigger vehicle next time. The Mercedes in the last "little n' large" pack (76924 Mercedes-AMG G 63 & SL 63) was also a big black 4x4, and while the Bronco in set 76905 Ford GT Heritage Edition and Bronco R has a nice pop of red, it still features a hearty dose of monochrome.
That said, not every fan of LEGO Speed Champions is a Pokémon-style 'gotta catch em all' maniac, so the extreme contrast between the vehicles in this set is likely to be perfectly sufficient for most buyers.

Thanks for this review! I liked these builds and the mix of parts they contain.
ReplyDeleteThe Land Rover appears to be a Defender 110 SVX, (which is associated with a James Bond movie so maybe there were licensing complications and that's why they don't specify?)
The Lego model does fairly accurately capture the grill brush guard and general style of it.
Personally I love the blue/black color mix! It always annoys me when cool new bricks show up in more obscure colors (that I don't have many of in my collection), but classic space blue and Blacktron black are always welcome! I know not everyone feels that way but figured I'd offer that perspective.
The blue wedges left and right have never appeared in blue unprinted, so they are in that weird category where they are also a new recolour
