Parts review + MOCs: 43017 Oscar Piastri Helmet & 43023 Lando Norris Helmet from LEGO® Editions

Posted by Eero

In May 2026, two Formula 1® Scuderia Ferrari HP helmet models were released by the LEGO® Editions theme: 43022 Lewis Hamilton & 43014 Charles Leclerc, which were reviewed by Elspeth. She paid attention to both the mind-boggling construction and some really weird new pieces. I was a bit torn on these sets: on one hand, their MOC-like structure and use of various curved pieces was really interesting; on the other, they were covered with brand prints, and I have no interest in making MOCs "sponsored" by Unicredit, IBM and Shell.

When two more helmets were released in June with (almost) no sponsor prints but still covered in unique patterns and made in rare colours, I was surprised and excited. My main focus in the LEGO hobby is building MOCs, and the two sets, 43017 McLaren Mastercard F1 Team Oscar Piastri Helmet and 43023 McLaren Mastercard F1 Team Lando Norris Helmet looked really inspiring for MOCs. Today, I'll review the interesting parts of these sets – and there are lots of them – and then present three new MOCs inspired by their printed pieces.

I'm skipping the set builds, given the earlier duo were very similar. Although these look almost identical in structure, there are some changes within: about 30% of the moulds, and thus the total part count, are different. It is interesting to note that the design developed between the two pairs of helmets, which have only one month in between their release dates.

If you want to skip the new pieces and just see my MOCs, click here.

Another curious detail is that these helmets are not faithful replications of the real helmet designs. These drivers usually wear symmetrical helmets that have Monster Energy drink sponsor logos, but I suppose The LEGO Group did not want to advertise energy drinks. Furthermore, I could not find a real helmet design with asymmetrical orange parts, except ones that were actually inspired by these very LEGO sets and had their stud pattern printed on. LEGO mimics reality and reality mimics LEGO. Does it ever end?

Interesting parts in both sets

Unique recolours

  • Brick Round Corner 4 x 4 x 1 in Orange (6609847 | 5651)
  • 2x Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout in Orange (6612460 | 8008)

It's good that the macaroni slope is in both sets, as it is a lot more useful in pairs.

New prints

  • Windscreen 10 x 2 x 4 1/3 U Shape with intake print in Black (6606700) – Printed on a recolour
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Red 'BELL', Black 'HELMETS' in Black Oval, White Field print in Black (6611345)
  • Tile 2 x 6 with McLaren print in Black (6611344)
  • Tile 2 x 3 with 1.000 GP print in Black (660671)
  • 2x Slope Curved 3 x 1 x 2/3 with Black Triangle print in Orange (6611326)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 2 No Studs with 00 print in Black (6606706)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 2 No Studs with 1.0 print in Black (6606707)
  • 2x Dish 2 x 2 Inverted [Radar] with Golden Circle print in Black (6611330)

Unsurprisingly, most of the unique pieces appearing in both sets are used to build the black and orange section: in the sets, this section is mirrored, appearing in the left side of Lando Norris helmet and the right side of Oscar Piastri helmet (from viewer's point of view). As these sections are mirrored and not identical, there are still plenty of black and orange printed pieces unique to either set.

Rare parts in both sets

  • 2x Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout in Black (6612462 | 8008)
  • 2x Plate Round Corner 2 x 2 in Black (6610143 | 7904)
  • Slope 18° 2 x 1 x 2/3 in Orange (6594220 | 5404)

When the sets were released, these pieces only appeared in 1 or 2 other sets. While I was building the MOCs, they appeared in more sets. I'm not complaining.

Interesting parts in 43017 Oscar Piastri Helmet

Recolours

  • Visor 13 x 9 x 4 in Trans-Orange (6612580 | 8023)

Elspeth analysed this unusual LEGO visor piece in her review of the earlier sets. I don't recall seeing it in any MOCs yet. Spoiler alert - I did not use it in my MOCs, either. So as far I know, the vanity points are still up for grabs.

New prints

First, in black, two rather specific but stylish pieces:

  • Brick Curved 4 x 6 Double, 2 x 4 Cutout with Orange 1963 print in Black (6611256)
  • Tile 2 x 6 with "81" and Signature print in Black (6650332)

In orange:

  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Black Triangle print (6611254)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Black Trapezoid print (6611253)
  • Panel 5 x 5 x 3 1/3 Corner, Curved Top with Black Shapes print (6611255)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Left with Black Shapes print (6611252)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Right with Black Shapes print (6611251)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1 ⅔ with No Studs 2026 and Black Shapes print (6611320)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 3 x 2/3 No Studs with Black Shape print (6611319)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 No Studs with 8 print (6611245)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 No Studs with 1 print (6650331)

Pleasingly, for some of these pieces – including the neat quarter dome panel – the mirrored pair is available in the other set. We'll get into them.

In dark azure:

  • Panel 5 x 5 x 3 1/3 Corner, Curved Top with Dark Blue Stripes print (6611244)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Right with Dark Blue Stripes print (6611241)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Left with Oscar print (6611240)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 3 x 2/3 No Studs with Six Dark Blue Stripes print (6611317)
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Dark Blue Shapes print (6611243)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 No Studs with Four Dark Blue Stripes print (6611236)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Three Dark Blue Shapes, Dense, print (6611261)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Two Dark Blue Trapedzoids print (6611242)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Three Dark Blue Shapes, Loose, print (6611262)

The large number of colourful parts printed with abstract patterns is what makes these two helmets inspiring sources of pieces. The quarter panel looks especially sweet. I wish the wedge piece didn't have the Oscar text, but I have to live with it.

Still in dark azure:

  • Windscreen, Curved 6 x 2 x 2 with OKX print (6611237)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 Double with Orange Triangle and Dark Blue Curves print (6611235)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 Double with Quad Lock print (6615970)
  • Tile 2 x 3 with Two Dark Blue Shapes print (6611259)
  • Tile 2 x 2 with 81 print (6611258)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 No Studs with GP print (6611318)
  • Brick Curved 4 x 6 Double, 2 x 4 with Cutout, with Minifig Head and Southern Cross Constellation print (6611247)

The 2x3 tile aside, these are a bit more specific. The orange details are a bit distracting, but I like the classic smiley in the 4x6 curved slope.

Rare parts

  • Brick Round Corner 4 x 4 x 1 in Dark Azure (6620798 | 5651) - also in 72537 Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 x 2/3 in Dark Azure (6598398 | 7302) – also in 72153 Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise
  • 2x Bracket 1 x 1 - 1 x 1 in Dark Azure (6609913 | 36841) - also in 77977 Baby Dinosaur: Pteranodon

Useful pieces, although the macaroni slope would be more useful in pairs.

Oscar Piastri minifigure

  • Minifig Head Oscar Piastri in Warm Tan (6611276)
  • Torso, Dual Molded Arms with Dark Blue Sleeves Pattern, Warm Tan Arms and Hands with Pock and Kangaroo print in Dark Blue (6618316)
  • Hips with Dark Red Legs and Warm Tan Legs with Thongs Pattern in Dark Red (6611278)

Oscar doesn't don any traditional Formula 1 attire: instead, he looks like he's having a day off.

Sticker sheets

The smaller of these two sheets appears in both sets, and the brand logo part of the larger is identical to the one in the Lando Norris helmet.

Interesting parts in 43023 Lando Norris Helmet

Unique recolours

In vibrant yellow:

  • Brick Round Corner 4 x 4 x 1 (6614043 | 5651)
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 (6609854 | 85984)
  • 2x Bracket 1 x 1 - 1 x 1 (6612519 | 36841)
  • Bracket 1 x 2 - 2 x 2 (6612465 | 21712)
  • Plate Special 2 x 2 x 2/3 with Two Studs On Side and Two Raised [Half Hollow Anti-stud] - Updated Version (6612463 | 4304)
  • 3x Slope 18° 2 x 1 x 2/3 (6609857 | 5404)

Vibrant yellow is one of the coolest colours in the current palette, and has remained relatively rare. Despite the small quantities, these useful pieces are very welcome.

Still in vibrant yellow:

  • Plate 6 x 6 (6612544 | 3958)
  • Plate 3 x 3 (6612541 | 11212)
  • Plate 2 x 2 Corner (6619993 | 2420)
  • 4x Plate 2 x 2 (6613273 | 3022)

Due to the rarity of this colour, even universal pieces like these plates are actually recolours.

New prints

  • Brick Curved 4 x 6 Double, 2 x 4 Cutout with Never Stop Building print in Black (6611329)
  • Tile 2 x 6 with Signature and 1 print in Black (6649780)

The large curved slope is a mirrored pair from Oscar Piastri helmet, except for the text, which naturally is not mirrored. The signature is pretty cool, but would be more useful if printed on a separate tile from the orange numeral. Printing them on the same piece decreases the number of unique prints (of which there are lots) and makes the set cheaper to make.

Again in vibrant yellow:
  • Panel 5 x 5 x 3 1/3 Corner, Curved Top with Black Squiggles print (6662185, 6611339)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Left with Black Squiggles print (6662184, 6611335)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Right with Black Squiggles print (666218, 6611334)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 Double with Black Spots print (6606701)
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Black Wave print (6611338
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Black Curve print (6606705)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Black Hook print (6611337)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Vertical Black Squiggle print (6611341)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Black Shapes print (6611342)

Look at these gorgeous pieces! I don't recall seeing prints that good in any set. The brilliant vibrant yellow background, the abstract yet simple prints, and plenty of contrast and character. I'm inspired.

  • Windscreen, Curved 6 x 2 x 2 with OKX print (6606704)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 3 x 2/3 No Studs with Black LN kart Squiggle print (6611323)
  • Brick Curved 4 x 6 Double, 2 x 4 Cutout with Black Squiggle and Minifigure Head print (6611340)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 No Studs with Black Squiggles print (6625151)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 Double with Black Squiggle and Orange Triangle print (6606702)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 No Studs with "Pure Electric" Black Hoop print (6606703)

This second batch has some additional design elements on them. Again, I'm not fan of the orange additions, but the minifigure head,  LN kart logo and "Pure electric" are actually pretty cool.

In orange:

  • Panel 5 x 5 x 3 1/3 Corner, Curved Top with Black Shapes print  (6611325, 6662182)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 2 No Studs with 1 PAP print (6649779)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 1 No Studs [Stud Holder with Symmetric Ridges] with "we are grip" print (6611327)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 1 No Studs [Stud Holder with Symmetric Ridges] with Black Emblem print (6611350)
  • Slope Curved 3 x 1 No Studs with Black Trapezoid print (6606714)
  • Slope 30° 1 x 2 x 2/3 with Black Triangle print (6615977)

As mentioned earlier, the quarter dome and the 1x3 curved slope are mirrored versions of pieces available in the Oscar Piastri helmet, while the others are not.

I wonder what kind of MOC would be a natural home for "we are grip"? A kind of crab?

More in orange:

  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Left with 748495 print (6662180, 6606712)
  • Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Right with Black Shapes  (6662181, 6606713)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 3 x 2/3 No Studs with Black Shape print (6611321)
  • Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 No Studs with Never Stop Racing print (6611322)

The numbers and letter aside, these are mirrored pairs from Oscar Piastri pieces. Sounds like a good point of departure for a MOC.

Rare parts

  • Visor 13 x 9 x 4 in Trans-Black (6612577 | 8023) – also in 43014 Scuderia Ferrari HP Charles Leclerc Helmet
  • Tile 1 x 2 with Stud Notch Right in Metallic Silver (6606726 | 117536 | 5092) - also in 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss

Lando Norris minifigure

  • Minifig Head Lando Norris in Warm Tan (6611366)
  • Hips with Black Legs and White Boots Pattern with print in Black (6611368)
  • Torso, Black Arms, Warm Tan Hands with Jacket and Grey Shirt print in Black (6650388

Lando Norris looks smug and youthful. He has his initials printed on his shirt so he can be easily identified.

Sticker sheets

Again, the smaller sheet is identical to the Oscar Piastri helmet and has spare stickers. I'm happy that these sponsor logos are not printed – this way, they are easy to ignore.

MOCs: The Formula Helmet Collection

Sweet Sulphur Dress

The vibrant yellow pieces inspired me the most, so I began with them. I focused on the larger parts as they had the interplay of colour and the pattern in the clearest form. I was especially keen to use the large quarter dome panel. Naturally, it allows more leeway than the older full brick variants did.

I formed a loose top with it. Connecting it under the neck forced me to make an unusual neck joint that is not that clean, especially on the back. However, I needed some kind of joint to get the quarter panel at the correct angle.

The bottom part of the dress had similar challenges. The 3x8x2 windscreen halves have a wonderful shape, but they lack sturdy connection points like bars or pin holes. As such, they are connected with only two antistuds at the tip, which is not optimal. They are connected to 1x2 round plates, which connect to hinged bars near the waist. This allows some freedom of movement to the side panel. Likewise, the middle panel is connected on a 2x2 turntable.

This dress was a bit punk so I combined it with heavy boots. Vibrant yellow rim – probably a sock – helps to balance the colour scheme. Later during the process I added dark purple as another layer underneath the vibrant yellow.

Finally, the donut coiffure is made of modern skeleton arms in black. It is a tablescrap I have had around for years, waiting for the perfect opportunity.

Sapphire Sky Dress

The pattern on the medium azure parts was more fragmented than on the vibrant yellow ones, so I didn't have to lean so much on the few large pieces. Furthermore, I had a pretty good collection of this colour beforehand, so I was less reliant on the pieces from the sets. Nonetheless, I'm really happy that I managed to integrate the large quarter dome here, too, without breaking the flow of the dress.

If the Sweet Sulphur Dress was more punk, the blue one was to be super glamorous. I made a pair of high-heel shoes with sparkling metallic silver pieces, fastened with strings from the set 21329 Fender® Stratocaster™ that I reviewed 5 years ago.

The many medium nougat recolours introduced over the last 2 years helped a lot with the limbs. However, I still need some crucial SNOT bricks in that hue for the arms, to make them sturdier.

To add a touch of colour, I made a handbag using the leftover prints from the Lando Norris helmet – and to complete the exchange, I built a medium azure bag for the Sweet Sulphur Dress.

Finally, I'm very happy with the bow behind the head, which uses the 4x4 macaroni slope. The metallic silver earrings balance the shine on the shoes.

Orange-Cola Trip Dress

I built this with the leftovers of both helmets, inspired by their symmetrical and almost-symmetrical prints.

I began with the top, which uses the 2x3 curves slopes printed with digital numbers. They distantly reminded me of some traditional fastening systems or ornamental ruffs on the bodices. With this idea in mind, the overall costume evolved into a more Victorian vibe, like a governess or similar. It has the contrast of very graphical prints of orange and black with simple, rounded shapes.

The quarter domes are used here as a sort of shoulder cloak, reminiscent of something Sherlock Holmes could wear.

Again, I was troubled by their mundane antistud connections that lack the sturdiness needed in action figures. Thus, the shoulder cloak doesn't follow the movement of the arm but is simply connected on the shoulder. The D-SNOT connection allows circumforaneous movement but cannot be lifted sideways.

Originally, this figure was to have dark red stockings, but they were too dark with the dominating black of the colour scheme. I switched them to white, which I also used on the puffed sleeves, and ultimately on the hair ribbon. The white trousers display the shaping rather nicely, achieved with the 2x2 corner round curved slopes introduced two years ago. However, the hem, made of the printed 3x6x2 windscreen halves, limits all but the tiniest movement of the legs, making the model less interesting to pose and photograph. In contrast, the more free-form design of the Sweet Sulphur Dress enabled me to overcome this issue by connecting these pieces to adjustable joints.

Conclusion

With a price of US$89.99/ £79.99/ 89.99€/ AU$149.99 for 793 pieces including one (relatively uninteresting) minifgure, the sets are a bit on the expensive side – especially if compared with other LEGO Editions sets, which tend to have excellent value despite being licensed. However, I think these helmets pack plenty of punch as parts packs. Obtaining a copy of the set might work out best depending on how many of the parts you want – while elements from the set have recently been added to Pick a Brick, sadly most have not, including those printed pieces.

Vibrant colours and crazy prints are not everyone's cup of tea, but if that kind of MOCs inspire you, I can recommend these sets. The vibrant yellow Lando Norris helmet is the better of the two, but this is simply a matter of taste.

  1. Funny, today I've spent an hour removing the prints (Tamiya polishing compound) from a few 4x8 orange slopes, after losing hopes that LEGO would release them unprinted, leaving only 4 on Bricklink in the EU now.
They'll be the new hair for my Dexter ('s laboratory), in lieu of the thinner 42918's which LEGO ALSO never released in orange and had to come from a Mould King boat.

Nice MOCs btw, the patterns work nice as dresses.

  2. Eero, you are phenomenal! The Sweet Sulphur character is my favourite! Amazing!
