Review: GwP 40774 Classic Animation Scenes from LEGO® Disney

Posted by Tim Johnson

What's on the box, luv? Looks like there's a Disney movie on every channel! The current LEGO® Gift with Purchase (GwP) is a treat for Disney animation fans, with a choice of 3 different vignettes to slide into a retro TV casing.

Lego Disney 40774 Classic Animation Scenes

Elements

There are no exclusive bricks here, however Simba (6503438) is rare having only appeared before in LEGO® Ideas set 21352 Magic of Disney.

The sticker sheet is, of course, exclusive and features the Disney logo, titles of the Toy Story and The Lion King movies, and the iconic round Pixar yellow ball.

The model

The TV is a fun build, starting with a rectangular box to which 4 large curved panels are applied sideways.

The antenna, frame, dials and legs are added to complete this 1950s tech. I adore the stubby little inverted-cone legs, and the use of grille tiles on the sides is perfect.

Next come the vignettes.

First up is the Disney emblem shown before all Disney movies and shows, featuring the familiar castle, fairy arc and wordmark. The bold, two-colour design looks great and I find the curved gaps between the "bowtie" tiles (3396) and quarter tiles actually add to the grandeur of the castle.

Pixar's Toy Story comes next, featuring a minifigure Woody, a toy soldier, and Lenny the wind-up binoculars. They stand in front of the Pixar ball and the iconic bedroom wall with its clouds perfectly represented by a D-shaped and a heart-shaped tile.

The straight-on perspective, and Woody forced to stand straight on, make this vignette look rather flat. It would help if you swap out one of the bricks under Woody's feet so there are fewer studs, and he can stand on one stud and be angled slightly, as Lenny can be.

Finally comes The Lion King, with a cutesy Simba standing majestically on the rocks. This is my favourite of the vignettes – a beautiful scene, with a surprising sense of depth. I think the two 3-leaf plants of different sizes really help sell the illusion.

Above, you see all three without their stickers. I'm happier without the titles as the scenes are easy to guess, but Toy Story suffers without the Pixar ball being applied to the 3x3 round yellow tile. The lack of a Disney logo would also be amiss, since it forms part of the logo.

Conclusion

This is my favourite GwP of the year so far! Although nothing complicated, I enjoyed both the TV construction and the vignettes. It makes a great desk ornament, especially since you can change it out every once in a while. Furthermore, it will surely inspire many people to get creative and design vignettes of their own favourite media.

The threshold is high at US$130/ £115/ 130€/ AU$210, but it's not hard to spend that much on a LEGO set nowadays! The promotion runs until 11 November, so hopefully stocks are sufficient to last most if not all that time.

From midnight Saturday 1 November, 21363 The Goonies is available (early access for LEGO Insiders; general availability from 4 November) and you can read Elspeth's reviews of both the LEGO Goonies set and its associated Gift with Purchase, The Walshes' Attic.

  1. This is a fun set, I'm glad it's available with any purchases and not just Disney!

The modular scenes that you can switch out feel like a great opportunity for MOCs as well, especially if your favorite movie is a different one than one of these.
