LEGO® Super Mario 2020: Recolours Galore

Posted by Admin
With the imminent release of the new theme LEGO® Super Mario on 1 August, Ben Davies thought this was the perfect time to tell you about all the LEGO parts that come in new colors across the range. Namely; 40414 Monty Mole & Super Mushroom, 71360 Adventures with Mario, 71362 Guarded Fortress, 71363 Desert Pokey, 71364 Whomp’s Lava Trouble, 71365 Piranha Plant Power Slide, 71366 Boomer Bill Barrage, 71367 Mario’s House & Yoshi, 71368 Toad’s Treasure Hunt, 71369 Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle, 71370 Fire Mario Power-Up Pack, 71371 Propeller Mario Power-Up Pack, 71372 Cat Mario Power-Up Pack, 71373 Builder Mario Power-Up Pack, 71376 Thwomp Drop and 71377 King Boo and the Haunted Yard. These products were provided to us for free by LEGO; the author's opinions were not biased by this.

When we spoke to LEGO® Super Mario lead designer Jonathan Bennink in May, he teased that nearly 200 new elements had been introduced for the brand new theme. In the second part of our comprehensive examination of the LEGO Super Mario range, we’ll be taking a closer look at the new and rare colours of parts introduced in the upcoming sets.

New LEGO parts in Dark Orange

To begin us off, a whopping nine Dark Orange recolours appear across the LEGO Super Mario line, the majority appearing in 71362 Guarded Fortress. While builders will no doubt find uses for all these elements, the most useful are likely to be the inverted slopes.

The full list of new Dark Orange elements features:

New LEGO parts in Cool Yellow/ Bright Light Yellow

Following on the (w)heels of the Fiat 500 earlier this year, three more bricks have been introduced in Cool Yellow. The most notable is the 2x2 plate, which surprisingly hasn’t previously appeared in this colour.

Three elements appear for the first time in Cool Yellow:

New LEGO parts in Bright Yellowish Green/ Lime

All exclusive to 71367 Mario’s House & Yoshi, three new Bright Yellowish Green elements are being introduced, including the 1x2/1x2 downward bracket.

New LEGO parts in Medium Nougat

Two new Medium Nougat elements can be found in 71363 Desert Pokey and 40414 Monty Mole & Super Mushroom. While both elements are interesting, the 2x2x2/3 Plate W. Bow in Medium Nougat is particularly exciting, as the smaller 1x2x2/3 Plate with Bow has been available in Medium Nougat since 2017.

The list of new Medium Nougat elements consists of:

  • Plate W. Bow 2X2X2/3 (6312473 | 15068) (2x in 71363, 2x in 40414)

Three new elements come in Medium Lavender, all in 71368 Toad’s Treasure Hunt. This includes two new arch bricks, much to the delight of builders.

These Medium Lavender elements include:

  • Arch Brick 6X6X2 (6325878 | 87559) (2x in 71368)

New LEGO parts in Bright Red/ Red

Though they could hardly be more different in size, two new Bright Red elements have been introduced including, at long last, the 2x14 plate.

In Bright Red, we’re getting:

  • Plate 2X14 (6308885 | 91988) (6x in 71369)
  • 3.2 Shaft W/ 5.9 Ball (6323083 | 22484) (1x in 71377)

New LEGO parts in Bright Purple/ Dark Pink

Two new Bright Purple/ Dark Pink recolours come in 71368 Toad’s Treasure Hunt, including a 2x2 Round Plate.

These two recolours are:

  • Voodoo Ball Ø10,2 (6228091 | 32474) (2x in 71368)

New LEGO parts in Bright Yellow/ Yellow

Two Bright Yellow recolors are also appearing in the upcoming Super Mario sets. In the wake of the recently introduced Bright Yellow 3x3x2 Arch Brick, the 6x6x2 Arch Brick is a most welcome development.

Debuting in Bright Yellow are:

  • Brick 1X2, Outside Half Bow (6297284 | 37352) (1x in 71365)
  • Arch Brick 6X6X2 (6325715 | 87559) (2x in 71368)

New LEGO parts in Dark Stone Grey/ Dark Bluish Gray

Two new Dark Stone Grey elements will also feature in forthcoming sets.

  • Ridged Tile 2X4/25º (6189120 | 3299) (2x in 71363)
  • Brick 1X2, Outside Half Bow (6302690 | 37352) (2x in 71369)

Other new colours of LEGO parts in Super Mario

Just in case the 54 recolours above aren’t enough, five more miscellaneous elements will be coming in as many colours. Most notable among these are the 1x1x2/3 Pyramid in White, the 2x16 Plate in Sand Yellow/ Dark Tan, and the 3x3 Rounded Plate with 2x2 Cutout in Black, a new color for a part design only recently introduced in 75551 Brick-built Minions and their Lair (which we will review soon).

Those five other recolours created for LEGO Super Mario are:

  • Flat Tile 2X2 Round W. Hole Ø4.85 in Dark Red (6315199 | 15535) (1x in 71360)
  • Plate 2X16 in Sand Yellow/ Dark Tan (6316277 | 4282) (2x in 71365)

  1. 29119 and 29120 in tan are incredibly exciting. They'll be invaluable for character builds.

  2. Are you sure that headlight brick and Plate 1X2 W. 1 Knob never appeared in bright green/green color?

    1. Yup! We double and triple check and neither part has appeared in Bright Green previously.

    2. I have a bunch I think I got at PAB wall. Bright green is the "regular" green, right?

    3. Oops, mine is green, not bright green.

  3. FINALLY! Pyramid Ridged Tile 1x1x2/3 in WHTIE!

  4. 3.2 Shaft W/ 5.9 Ball makes a second Red recolour of a Mixels ball joint element, after 6628 Ball With Friction Snap, introduced last year. I wonder if this means some other joints will be coming in not-grey shades?

    1. I'm a little skeptical that it portends anything particular. That type of ball joint/towball component has a long history of appearing in other colors—it's the Mixel joints with high-friction ball cups that have not appeared in any colors besides dark grey and light grey.

  5. Another rare, very costy part that makes a comeback: 15571 in tan (in one of the Mario blind bags)

  6. I find that red 2x14 plate particularly interesting, because the part is so ordinary, so I checked what Bricklink knows about it. I was surprised to find that it exists only in few colours and most of the "traditional" primary colours are missing, for example there's no blue, yellow or white version of it and red appears only now. On the other hand, it's new-ish, only released first in 2012 so I guess wide colour palette is not to be expected yet.

    1. I think that's sometimes liable to happen with "ordinary" parts, especially with larger ones. Like, in a lot of scenarios where a part like this could be useful, you could probably achieve a similar result with a combination of smaller plates, or a plate in a different color, or even by changing the size of the model to use a different size of plate. It's only when a situation shows up where none of those alternatives will really work suitably that these sorts of gaps in the lineup of parts get filled.

  7. Little/Widely known fact: The Bushes in SMB 1 are just recolored cloud sprites.

  8. Gold good job
