Exclusive pieces
Sail, 9 x 12 with Griffin (6618122)
- Sail, 9 x 12 with 4 Holes in White with Red Griffin print (6618122)
It measures 67mm x 95mm and is emblazoned with an impressive red griffin. The head has a nice sense of "LEGO DNA" to its design. The plastic has a pleasant, fabric-like texture.
Minifigures
- 2x Shield Triangular with Spiked Top in Flat Silver with Griffin print in Red, Dark Blue and Gold (6627638)
- 2x Torso in Flat Silver with Armor and Belt print and Dark Blue Arms and Pearl Gold Hands (6627742)
The cute griffin on the sail becomes magnificent on the shield! Printed in 3 bold colours, the design shines literally and figuratively.
The pair use the Griffin Knights torso from 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine, but with different colour arms from the original dark red. While it is a shame that these don't fully qualify as exclusive, its great to see the torso re-used and I prefer this dark blue variant, especially with the classic helmet.
There's even printing at the rear!
The build
Hinges are used to created the bowed walls of the captain's quarters, and the walls are topped with two layers of angled plates to correctly position the structure while still allowing the walls to swing open for access.
Note the trapdoor to the treasure is now in place: I'll keep its contents a secret! You can also see above the chest of gold in the captain's quarters.
The iconic castellations are achieved with series of brackets rather than SNOT bricks, providing a few more positions for your minifigures.
Lastly, the fine sail is hoisted on a LEGO Technic pole with four antenna sticks threaded through the holes.
Conclusion
I have no doubt it is going to be very popular, on nostalgia alone. I was in my Dark Age by the time the original was released 34 years ago, so I have no particular nostalgia for the original design, but nevertheless, this still twangs a few LEGO Castle strings from my era.
The exclusive and stunning shield will be highly sought after, and deservedly so – it is a rich and beautiful design. and even though it is plainer, I think I love the sail more.
There's plenty of fun to be had on board, most obviously with the cannon ready to blast away any Black Falcons on shore. If the wind fails you, you can resort to oar power. There's also a keg and a goblet for any on-board celebrations.
You can even fit a minifigure sideways into the captain's quarters!
There are plenty of ways to reach the threshold, with recent set releases and retiring sets galore but also new Pick a Brick pieces from March sets and retiring PaB parts that are now discounted (and largely sold out in North America).
Then there are all the offers for LEGO Insiders Days that vary from country to country, visible from midnight Tuesday 7 July until 12 July/while stocks last.
