New moulds
Two new elements are included in the set; both fall into the 'useful but not game changing' category:
4 x 8 Tile (8165)
- 1x Tile 4 x 8 in Black with Jurassic Park Jeep plaque print (6605797 | 8165)
- 1x Tile 4 x 8 in Light Bluish Gray (6606856 | 8165)
8 x 8 Round Plate with 6 x 6 Round Opening (8083)
- 1x Plate Round 8 x 8 with 6 x 6 Round Opening in White (6608409 | 8083)
- 1x Plate Round 8 x 8 with 6 x 6 Round Opening in Black (6594933 | 8083)
A prime use for the new plate will be to secure 4x4 quarter curved elements without impeding interior access or leaving any jagged edges (above, left) - handy for tall round structures such as rockets or castle towers. Comparing it to it's solid-plate counterparts (above, top left) is a little amusing, it's as if someone has taken a disk cutter to the solid 8 x 8 version (74611).
A close relative is missing from the family photo (above, bottom right): the recently introduced Plate Round Half 5 x 8 with 4 x 6 Round Cut-out (7961) found in the LEGO® Star Wars™ SMART Play™ sets.
Canvas (6616718)
The mahoosive canvas that adorns the Jeep comes partially pre-folded in its own paper pouch. Yay, another bit of LEGO® DUPLO®-compatible packaging! It's a rather lovely 'element' with its dark tan and black dual-sided colouring. It surely has potential for re-use as a spacious minifigure tent or a garment for a large figure build.

Verdict
At US$199.99/ £179.99/ 199.99€/ AU$299.99, the reliance on stickers may feel inappropriate to many, but considering how many printed pieces would have been required to complete all four versions, I can see why this route was chosen.
The build techniques and parts selection are appropriate for the model, but don't feel exceptional unless you need to bump up your stock of light bluish grey or if you enjoy a more traditional LEGO building experience. In other words, it's a set for Jurassic Park fans (with deep pockets!), not us parts monkeys, and that's okay.

Interesting that Lego seems to have paid the extra money for the Barbasol license.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, the yellow hood would turn up in other places...
I had those new cropped 5848 in my last B&P order. I'm used to missing parts in LEGO orders when I receive them, but this time they warned that they were out of stock and removed from my order. Is that a new thing? We're now not guaranteed to be sent a full B&P order anymore?
ReplyDeleteWell, if you haven't been charged for them, it doesn't strike me as too controversial.
DeleteMy personal history with PAB has been a bit shaky, lately. My last order was several months delayed, and when it finally arrived, about 50% or something was something else but somewhat similar to what I had ordered. I managed to get the most expensive and desirable missing parts sent as replacements separately, though, and now it kind of feels that the parts are comparable and the statute of limitations has set in.
I have so many parts, now, so I mostly wait until there are 2x Points, parts on sale or deal-sealer parts available before placing new orders nowadays. As I guess many persons are thinking alike, it might mean the situation is more likely to occur again, however...
Hopefully, Lego has hired some more staff members and set up better systems so it won't happen again, though.
How is it not controversial? If LEGO accepted my order, I expect it to be delivered.
DeleteOtherwise it can cost a lot of time & money on new orders when you've planned everything correctly. You rarely need to buy from just B&P (which never has everything you need)
Yeah that's super annoying, especially if it's a new or rare part that you centered the order on. You should have the option to deny the entire order, or maybe get free shipping on whatever next order includes the parts.
DeleteAs for the Barbasol can, it looks identical to the one in 76958 Dilophosaurus Ambush from 2023.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing all those studded technic beams in the chassis! The slop in the steering is annoying looking, glad it doesn't affect function too much.
