About the model

child playing with Lego set 80118 Fortune Firecracker

It is a tradition to set off firecrackers during Chinese New Year Eve. Ser 80118 Fire Cracker is a mixture of wall art with a couple of play features.

It features ornate firecrackers, with LEGO bricks inside – to make a ‘crackling’ noise when moved!

Press the button to reveal a scene: choose from either a firework display or a people welcoming the God of Fortune.

The scenes are removable, so that as one of the celebration scenes is displayed inside the firecracker model, the other can be played with separately.

Minifigures

6 lego minifigs: family of child, mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, and a god of fortune minifig

The set features 6 minifigures, including the family shown in these sets every year and a God of Fortune.

Recoloured pieces

We noticed two recolours in the set:

the model with 2 pieces highlighted
  • Round Plate 4x4 (60474) in Dark Turquoise
  • Wedge Plate 3x3 (2450) in Pearl Gold
Can you see any more?  I should say that we all think the gold elements are pearl gold in colour rather than metallic gold, even though the renders can be deceiving sometimes.

About the set

the model 80119 Galloping Horse Canvas

The main components of this model are a "canvas" printed with a brush painting of 4 galloping horses, and four brick-built horses that actually gallop. The horses symbolise a traditional blessing of "success upon arrival" in the New Year. Horses are a symbol of strength and the total number of 8 depicted in set symbolises good fortune.

There is also a small scene with two minifigures that we'll come to in a moment.

view of the plastic sheet representing the canvas

The plastic sheet representing the canvas is obviously a new element for this set, and it measures 29cm (11.5 in) in length and 19cm (7.5 in) in width.

closeups showing the horses gallop when you turn a crank handle

The legs of the 4 brick-built horse are poseable, and there's a play function when turning the handle makes the horses move as if galloping out of the painting. Sadly no videos of this kinetic moption were provided in our press pack, so stay tuned for our pre-release review!

Minifigures

minifig in a horse outfit, and a girl holding Chinese calligraphy and a brush

The model is accompanied by a small scene with a minifigure in a Year of the Horse costume and another painting a horse onto a scroll along with calligraphy of the Chinese character 馬 (), which – you guessed it – means "horse". Is that brush made of horsehair I wonder?

There's a small scene of a calligraphy table with scroll included to place the minifigures on.

As is tradition with the LEGO® Spring Festival sets, the horse headgear is a new mould. We have previously only had a Unicorn Costume headgear element.

  1. I guess we don't know whether the dark turquoise 4x4 round plates are the ones with a 2x2 hole in the center or not? Either would be new but without pics of it parted out it's impossible to tell.

  2. I think the triple-leaf plates used for the black and brown horses' manes are a new recolor too! they've previously come in Transparent Black and Titanium Metallic, but not in regular black.
