LEGO® Disney review: Storybook Adventures - the recolours and printed pieces

Posted by Admin
We're excited to have our friend TobyMac, from the fantastic website Rebrickable.com(which shows you what other models you can make with your existing parts) reviewing the new LEGO® Disney Storybook Adventure sets for you across two posts this week. A Technic fan as a child, Tobias came back to LEGO around 10 years ago when he discovered Peeron.com. When that great resource sadly stopped updating he stumbled upon Rebrickable and, soon becoming utterly LEGO-obsessed, he became an admin there in 2016.

This week I’ll be looking at four sets at once:
43174 Mulan’s Storybook Adventures, 43175 Anna and Elsa’s Storybook Adventures, 43176 Ariel’s Storybook Adventures, and 43177 Belle’s Storybook Adventures. This series of sets consists of a LEGO-build book with a small diorama on the inside and figures, to play out your own stories.

These sets caught my eye because of the new style of figures introduced, which BrickLink call Micro Doll. Then I also noticed the large book pieces. Unneeded, single-use parts? Or could a creative mind do more with them? I’ll describe them for you, and let you be the judge.

For this review, I’ve put the parts of all four sets into one pile while figuring out which parts are new, in a recolor or rare version, or of course newly printed.

Recolors in LEGO Disney Storybook Adventures sets

The Brick Special Arch 1 x 2 Jumper comes in a new color in these sets: Dark Stone Grey/ Dark Bluish Gray (Window Arch – 6292417|38583). It also appears in White (6278396) which has only appeared in three sets so far, all from 2019.

Technic Pin Long with Friction Ridges Lengthwise and Stop Bush comes in two unusual recolors: Warm Gold/ Pearl Gold (6285441|32054) and Silver Metallic/ Flat Silver (6294233|32054). The Flat Silver version comes in 43175 Anna and Elsa's Storybook Adventures while the Pearl Gold comes in the three other sets. This element used to appear in 13 colours but from 2006 onwards was reduced to only three: Black, Medium Stone Grey/ Light Bluish Gray, and Bright Red/ Red. In 2017, Bright Orange/ Orange was reintroduced and now, for the first time ever, we get a Technic pin moulded in pearl colours.

Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Horizontal Swirl / Twist (a.k.a. the turd) appears for the first time in White (6292800 | 53119), used here as shells, or maybe barnacles.

This is the first time this element has appeared in a color other than its original Reddish Brown, and other than 43176 Ariel's Storybook Adventures it currently also appears in three other 2020 sets.

There are three new parts in Vibrant Coral/ Coral:

  • Clam / Scallop Shell with 4 Studs (6287639|18970)
  • Plate Special 2 x 2 with Groove and Center Stud (6287638|23893)
  • Sea Weed (6292823|49577).

The Sea Shell also appears in set 41250, new in 2020.

The new effect Transparent Blue Opalescent/ Satin Trans-Light Blue has been discussed before and in set 43176 the color is used for the part Windscreen 6 x 2 x 2 with Handle (6290574|35375).

Here are the rest of the recolors:

  • Window 1 x 2 x 2 Castle in Aqua/ Light Aqua (6287502|90195)

  • Slope 45 deg 2 x 4 in Light Royal Blue/ Bright Light Blue (6136395|3037)

  • Tile 2 x 3 in Bright Reddish Violet/ Magenta (6292373|26603), which appears also in set 41254, new in 2020
  • Equipment Candle Stick in Warm Gold/ Pearl Gold (6290401|37762)

Printed pieces in LEGO Disney Storybook Adventures sets

There are a load of new prints in these sets. Firstly, here are the new ones found in 73177 Belle’s Storybook Adventure.

  • Brick 1 x 1 with Cogsworth Face print in Reddish Brown (6274759|61074). Besides a DUPLO version, this is the first time Cogsworth does not appear as a sticker.
  •
Madame de la Grande Bouche as Brick 1 x 2 x 2 with Inside Stud Holder with Face and Two Doors with Elaborate Handles Print in White (6288333|66493) is also a first in a printed version.

  • Brick 1 x 1 with Red Rose Print in Transparent/ Trans-Clear (6274758|61067).

  • And, much to the delight of my wife, there is a printed version of Chip as well: Equipment Cup / Teacup with Face and Crack Print in White (6288534|66583).

Above right, Cri-Kee makes a first appearance in print as Brick Round 1 x 1 Open Stud with Cricket Print in White (6288327|966489). Olaf gets a new body, seen above left: Minifig Head Olaf, with Snowman Body Print in White (6274760|61075).

Olaf has had a few versions over the years. Above on the left is the first I could find (missing a Black round 1x1 plate). In the middle is the most recent version from the Frozen II sets, and on the right is the version in 43175 Anna and Elsa’s Storybook Adventures. Note that the head, besides one updated print, has not changed over the years. There is also a Duplo version, but I don’t have that one in my collection.

Next up is a new piano print. This is the first version produced on a 1 x 2 tile. Last year the Tile 1 x 4 with Piano Keyboard Print was introduced in White (6284099|65679). It also appears in LEGO Friends 41400 Andrea’s Play Cube, which we reviewed a while back.

As far as I can find, Tile 2 x 2 with Groove and Music Sheet Print is the third 2 x 2 tile with a sheet music print. It comes in set 43176 in White (6288537|66586).

And the very first print on a 2 x 2 jumper plate (87580) comes in all four Storybooks, printed with golden decorations, and also in set 30554 in White (6288364|66509), new in 2020.

The 2 x 3 tile with 2 clips (30350) comes with two new prints, both used as a lock on the storybooks. Both are printed on a recolor of the part, namely Silver Metallic (6288536|66585) and Warm Gold (62883585/66500).

There is a new print for the Friends foal (11241) with dark turquoise eyes and white blaze on a Black part (6288356|66501).

Both a new print and a rare color is the Tile Special 2 x 3 Pentagonal with Triangle Window, Gold Decorations on Light Royal Blue/ Bright Light Blue (6293666|67048). This Nexo Knights shield part (22385) has been seen unprinted in Light Royal Blue only one time before in 75958 Beauxbatons' Carriage: Arrival at Hogwarts, released in 2019 and reviewed here.

The Cylinder Half 2 x 4 x 2 with 1 x 2 Cutout (24593) comes with a Window, Pink Flowers and Green Leaves print on White (6289292|66672).

There is also a new print for Mini Doll Mask Beast (26292). This is the second print for this part, coming again in Reddish Brown (6288513|59108). Besides the larger eyes and small changes to the eye-and-nose-brows, I don’t see any other differences to the first print (shown on the left).

Rare parts in LEGO Disney Storybook Adventures sets

There are also two rare prints that I wanted to mention. The Equipment Teapot with Eyes Print (Mrs Potts) is the only print produced for this part, previously appearing in two sets: 2018’s 10762 Belle's Story Time and 2016’s 41067 Belle's Enchanted Castle. It comes in White (6152341|26715).

The Tile 2 x 4 with Carpet Decoration print in Flame Yellowish Orange/ Bright Light Orange (6282189|65493) previously only appeared in 2019 41166 Elsa's Wagon Adventure.

Lastly before we go into the new parts, there are a few rare/ interesting colors to mention.

  • Arch 1 x 4 x 2 in Aqua (6182|6288512) has been in one other set: 41152 from 2018.

  • Brick 1 x 4 in Light Royal Blue (6287903|3010) is the second appearance since 2019.

  • Weapon Spear Tip with Fins appears for the second time in Warm Gold (6282861|24482) since 2019.

  • Headwear Accessory Plume / Feather Triple Point in Transparent Light Blue/ Trans-Light Blue (6145862|64647) has been in one set before, 71025 from 2019.

  • Brick 1 x 1 in Bright Bluish Green/ Dark Turquoise (6213776|3005) appeared twice in 2018 under a different Element ID (6236772), and re-appears four times in 2020.

  • Brick 1 x 2 x 1 Curved No Studs in Vibrant Coral (6261293|37352) appeared twice before in 2019.
  • Minifig Hair Swept Back with Short Ponytail appeared once before in Dark Orange (6290250|95226), once again as the hair for the human form of the Beast.
  • Mini Doll Hair Long with Parted Bangs, Curls, Bun, and Hole on Top in Reddish Brown (6147255|23955) is also unique to a character, appearing twice before on a Belle Mini Doll.
So, for sets of this small size, that was a pretty long list of new and rare elements. And I haven’t talked about the completely new parts yet!

  1. An interesting fact about that 2 x 2 music note tile is that the notes on it are the first noes of When you Wish Upon a Star (aka the Disney theme)

    1. Even more interesting is that the piano key tile appears to contain a complete octave, meaning you can daisy-chain them to make a realistic grand piano keyboard. You know, except for the fact that the black keys aren't taller than the white ones. And none of them move. On second thought, maybe they need to go back to the drawing board on that one...

  3. Besides the black 1x1 round plate for the lump of coal, he should be parked on a 2x2 round brick like R2-D2's head. They also updated that version the second time around with a much better 1x1 round white tile that has two tiny black dots for the coal. Not only is it more in scale with the character, but it's more obvious what it represents.

Coral comes in coral? Interesting. I may have to use that for Aquaman Vs 3 or 4, even though I hate the color (my retinas are still healing from the first time I laid eyes on it in the brick, and _NOBODY_ has a skintone that is flattered by that shade of lipstick no matter how much hype it gets).
