Review: 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith™ from LEGO® Icons

Posted by Ben Davies

While The LEGO Group has intermittently produced sets based on The Lord of the Rings since 2012, it is only since the theme was revived under the LEGO® Icons banner in 2023 that we have received sets distinctly aimed at adults.

The largest of these is the upcoming June 2026 set 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith, depicting the tiered capital city of the kingdom of Gondor. With an enormous piece count (and price to match), will this set live up to the source material? Let's take a look!

New moulds

Two new moulded elements are introduced in the set to enhance the minifigure selection.

Helmet, Castle / Fantasy with Sculpted Wings (7875)

The first of these new moulds (above right) is a new helmet for Gondorian soldiers, featuring distinctive, sculpted seabird wings. This detail is copied directly from the costumes in the films, as a reference to the Númenorean ancestry of Gondor. Four are included in the set, in Flat Silver (6575787).

I would have preferred to see the introduction of a family mould containing accessories necessary for creating a wider variety of Gondorian soldier ranks, such as Citadel and Fountain Guards.

Hair with Crown (117243)

A second, dual-moulded element has been introduced to facilitate Aragorn / King Elessar wearing the Crown of Gondor. The crown and hair are moulded in separate colours, allowing for a large degree of detail without the need for printing.

The set contains a single copy of the element in Dark Brown / Flat Silver (6602339) and two copies in White (6626581).

The set contains a handful of newly recoloured elements, broken down below row by row:

Minifigures

The set contains ten minifigures, all featuring designs unique to the set.

Aragorn / King Elessar is shown in his coronation armor. He features the new, dual-moulded hair element with an integrated Crown of Gondor. His decorated armor is modeled on the armor worn by Elendil, his ancestor, in the prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring.

Arwen is depicted in her light green coronation gown. She bears the banner of the White Tree, which she brings to Aragorn during the coronation ceremony.

Denethor (II), the embittered Steward of Gondor, is depicted as a physical minifigure for the first time, cloaked in his black and grey, fur-trimmed robes.

Faramir, the second son of Denethor and brother of Boromir, also makes his first physical appearance. He features a brown leather cuirass with the White Tree emblem and a dark green cloak, intentionally pulling from the design language of Rangers.

Pippin wears his Citadel Guard livery, denoted by a black cuirass prominently decorated with the White Tree of Gondor, a recurring symbol of the kingdom.

Gandalf the White appears as well; his first appearance in a set since 2013’s 79007 Battle at the Black Gate. Several updates have been made to the figure, including separate hair and beard pieces, and the addition of printed legs.

Shadowfax, Gandalf's horse, accompanies him.

Four Gondorian soldiers are included, featuring the new moulded helmet with a feathered texture; an evolution of the winged helmets of their Númenorean ancestors. The soldiers’ armor is also decorated with the White Tree emblem.

Building experience

Minas Tirith is assembled from 60 numbered paper-poly bags of elements, from the ground up. Accordingly, the main gate and sections of the outer wall of the city are the first to be assembled.

The exterior of the walls are relatively plain, but visual interest is added using a mix of masonry bricks and meshing slopes to suggest cracks.

To create the buttresses that lie flush with the angled outer walls, slopes are connected along different axes, resulting in a gap just under one module wide. To occupy this space, a plate with a layer of 1x1 flowers is vertically inserted into the gap. The recessed base of the flowers prevents any intersections with the edge of the slopes.

The model blends a microscale exterior with a minifigure-scale interior: a technique used previously in 10333 Barad-dûr. Accordingly, the outer walls can be detached to reveal a shallow courtyard. The left section of the courtyard contains weapon racks and a horse trough, while the right side features a food market, wheelbarrow, and bench.

With the outer walls now complete, focus shifts to the lower tiers of the city and bottom half of the Hall of Kings. The complex geometry of the model quickly becomes apparent during this stage of construction.

To create the semicircular walls of the apse, a (3, 4, 5) Pythagorean triple is constructed using hinge bricks, with the vertices offset a half-module on the horizontal axes. This creates an angled wall with measurements that still conform to the LEGO® System grid.

The focal point of the hall is the long-vacant throne of the King of Gondor. Situated to its right is a seat and table for the Steward of Gondor. The table is set with the chicken and cherry tomatoes that Denethor graphically consumes in The Return of the King.

Alcoves bordering the hall feature statues of the past kings of Gondor, utilizing the dual-moulded hair/crown piece introduced specifically for the set, here appropriately moulded in white to suggest marble.

To simplify the construction process, the upper tiers of Minas Tirith are assembled separately from the bottom tiers. The two sections are subsequently combined, with additional elements added to ensure model stability.

The upper level of the Hall of Kings features an elaborate vaulted ceiling, which incorporates a reflected triangle formed using 3 x 6 wedge plates (54383 and 54384). A combination of 1 x 2 (35480) and 1 x 4 (77845) rounded plates are used to reconnect the reflected geometry via a stud on the "sugar grid".

A much smaller reflected triangle is created to support the interior walls of the model. Instead of relying on angled plates, this instance combines a 1 x 4 hinge plate (1927) with a bar and clip connection to hold the configuration in place.

Two minifigure-scale rooms are placed within the upper levels of the city, accessible only by removing sections of facade. The first of these is the library where Gandalf researches the history of the One Ring, as seen in The Fellowship of the Ring. A classic 1 x 3 car door (3821) is cleverly used to represent an open scroll.

The second room is a loose rendition of the bedroom that appears in The Return of the King, when Gandalf and Pippin discuss the coming siege of Minas Tirith. In addition to the bed seen in the film, a chair and vanity are included.

The removable sections of facade also include hidden details for eagle-eyed fans. Specifically, the left section includes a hidden Palantir, or seeing stone, which displays events across Middle-earth.

The right facade masks a pile of firewood and a torch; a reference to the funeral pyre that Denethor constructs.

To secure the angle of this facade, an additional triangle is created by combining an angled lamp holder (41632) with an angled "espresso piece" (32828) that is mounted into a wall. This achieves a fixed diagonal wall that is not possible in this tight space using just hinges.

The final section of the model to be completed is the Citadel, the upmost level of Minas Tirith. This section consists of the Tower of Ecthelion, the Hall of Kings, and the Court of the Fountain which contains the White Tree of Gondor.

While constructing this section of the model, a 2 x 3 tile with 2 clips (65886) is placed flush against stacked plates. To avoid an intersection between the clips and the rest of the structure, a 3 x 3 plate with round corner (30357) is integrated into the model, allowing just enough space for the clips.

Final thoughts

At over 23.5 in. (59cm) high, 24.5 in. (62 cm) wide, and 14.5 in. (37 cm) deep, Minas Tirith is an impressive and imposing model on display. While display is undoubtedly the main function of the set, it nevertheless manages to balance this with delivering an engaging building experience that provides a masterclass in angling techniques.

While I feel the set does justify the considerable price it retails for, it does pale slightly when compared to prior The Lord of the Rings sets released under the LEGO Icons banner. This is most conspicuous in the minifigure selection, which lacks both the variety and quantity of previous sets, such as 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell.
