Review: Scuderia Ferrari HP helmets 43022 Lewis Hamilton & 43014 Charles Leclerc from LEGO® Editions Formula 1®

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

LEGO® Editions is the new theme aimed at teenage builders, and two upcoming sets in this theme depict the helmets of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.  Formula 1® has been getting the LEGO touch over the past year across a range of themes including collectable mini cars, LEGO® Speed Champions, LEGO® Technic... and now, helmets.

43022 Scuderia Ferrari HP Lewis Hamilton Helmet and 43014 Scuderia Ferrari HP Charles Leclerc Helmet also include minifigures of their respective owners, but we are most excited about the new moulds we spotted back when the F1 helmets were first revealed.

We were given these products by The LEGO Group; the author's opinions are their own.

New moulds

The same 6 new moulds appear in both sets,  so it makes sense to combine the reviews for new moulds.  Quite a few of the new moulds are printed and in different colours, so there are images of each new element but the geometry is the same of course.

Slope Curved 4 x 3 x  No Studs (8235)

  • 2x Slope Curved 4 x 3 x ⅔ No Studs in Black (6608383 | 8235) in both 43022 and 43014
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 3 x ⅔ No Studs with Red Lines, Black 'Riva' print in White (6611315 | 8235) in 43014
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 3 x ⅔ No Studs with Red Lines, Black 'Riva' print in White (6606677 | 8235) in 43014
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 3 x ⅔ No Studs with Red Lines print in  Yellow (6611268 | 8235)
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 3 x ⅔ No Studs with Red Lines print in Yellow (6611270 | 8235)

The new 4 x 3 x ⅔ curved slope is essentially four  3 x 1 x ⅔ (7302) curved slopes in a row together, which is quite a recent mould that first discussed  last year in Tom's review of 43008 Nike Dunk. The advantage of using the new mould rather than four of the 1-module wide version is two-fold; it provides more stability, plus there's a single large print surface.

Windscreen 10 x 2 x 4⅓ U Shape (8009)

  • 1x Windscreen 10 x 2 x 4⅓ U Shape with Red Stripes, Black Triangle print in White (6606678 | 8009) in 43014

  • 1x Windscreen 10 x 2 x 4⅓ U Shape with Red Rectangle, Black Triangle print in  Yellow (6615942 | 8009)

Geometry

The windscreen (it feels odd to call it a windscreen, but this is the official LEGO name) is 10 modules across and stands 4⅓ high with the bar connection positioned centrally at 3⅔ high.

The incomplete ends are an unusual part of the element's design.  In fact, we could only think of a couple of similar elements with the three full sides and then the fourth open. The vintage 1x1x1 window and the Belville swing (6200) are our two suggestions; can you think of any others?

These ends actually have zero clutch; you can see the difference in comparison with the vintage 1x1x1 window with its ridges. Evidently LEGO did not want the element to be connected using the ends.

Attaching two of the windscreen elements gives a 8x8 circular gap at the smaller side, which is rather satisfying to fill.

Toby thought this looked a little like an escape hatch,  resulting in this quick tablescrap using an 8 x 8 round plate with 2 x 2 Center Studs (6177) centrally. Connecting the bars in this plane requires a half-plate offset.

Panel 5 x 5 x 3 Corner, Curved Top  (8010)

  • 1x  Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ Corner, Curved Top with White Stripe print in Red (6611306 | 8010pr) in 43014
  • 1x Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ Corner, Curved Top with White Stripe print in  Red (6611296 | 8010pr) in 43014
  • 1x Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ Corner, Curved Top with Red Stripe print in (6639669 | 8010pr) in 43022
  • 1x Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ Corner, Curved Top with Red Stripe print in Yellow (6639671 | 8010pr) in 43022

Geometry

The 5x5 quarter circle panel has a 4x4 quarter circle cutout area inside thanks to the 1-module wide lip.  The single stud is 3⅓ bricks high, so you can see 3 bricks connect on the antistud.

The new 5x5 curve can connect with Brick Round Corner 5 x 5 Macaroni with  Inner Side (5532) and the new Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout (8008) which is also a new mould in these F1 helmet sets.

It may feel like the 5x5 macaroni plate (80015) should also be a match, but the difference in the curve is clear. The 5x5 macaroni plate is actually a 4x4 curve, but has an extra module of straight plate on each end that are not involved in the curve!

In terms of matching 5x5 quarter curves, there are two other elements that come to mind: Brick, Round Corner 5 x 5 without Studs (24599) and Brick, Round Corner 5 x 5 x 3⅓ Dome Top (76776).

There are two elements that match the vertical curve of the new panel; Panel 6 x 5 x 3⅓ Curved Top (5065 shown above in reddish brown), and Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ (5925, in transparent).

Interestingly, Panel 5 x 5 x 3⅓ (5925) still remains exclusive to  LEGO® Ideas set 21353 The Botanical Garden. You can see how Tom used the element in his article, Tom Loftus' MOCs using May 2025 Pick a Brick parts.

It feels like the Panel 5 x 5 x 3 Corner is the bigger sibling to Panel  3 x 3 x 1⅔ Corner (8135), a new mould that Toby examined in his review of the LEGO Editions Nike Air Max 95 last month. It also has an intangible kinship with the Dome 6 x 3 x 3 Half (7202), shown in red in the image above; this direct comparison makes it clear that multiples of the new panels do not form a dome.

Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1⅔ No Studs (8236)

  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1⅔ No Studs with Red Shapes, Black IBM Logo print in White (6611314 | 8236) in 43014
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1⅔ No Studs with Red Shapes, Black IBM Logo print in White (6611316 | 8236) in 43014

  • 1x  Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1⅔ No Studs with Red Lines, Black 'ambipar' print in Yellow (6611269 | 8236) in 43022
  • 1x Slope Curved 4 x 8 x 1⅔ No Studs with Red Lines, Black 'ambipar' print in Yellow (6611271 | 8235) in 43022

Much like the new 4 x 3 x ⅔ curved slope I discussed above, this other new large curved slope can also be made from multiple, 1-module wide elements of the same curve. In this case, lining up four 1 x 8 x 1 curved slopes (7217) in a row will create the new 4 x 8 x 1⅔ curved slope.

Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout (8008)

  • 4x Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout in Red (6612357 | 8008) in 43014

  • 4x Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout in Yellow (6588216 | 8008) in 43022

This new 5 x 5 round corner plate has a 2x2 cut out and was clearly designed to fit with the new 5 x 5 x 3⅓ panel. Placing four of the quarters in position gives a 10x10 circular plate, becoming the largest perfectly circular plate that can be made.

Visor (8023)

The visor in each set comes in its own protective bag to prevent scratches.

  • 1x Visor in Trans-Black (6612577 | 8023) in 43014

  • 1x Visor in Trans-Red (6612575 | 8023) in 43022

Geometry

The visor is not symmetrical as one side of the lower edge is a smooth curve, while the other (in the background of the photo above) has a protrusion. In the real-world helmets, the protrusion on the left side is used to raise the visor, but as we will see later, the visor cannot be raised in the LEGO model.

The visor is 12 modules in width with an annoying distance of 9½ modules between the two pin connector holes. The nature of this element means it can be flexed, but the measurements given are when the visor is in its 'happy place' at rest. I was able to widen the gap between the pin holes to 10 modules, but it definitely felt like I was stressing the element.

The visor is 9 modules deep with the pin holes situated 1 module in from the end. With the visor resting on its lowest point (namely the protrusion discussed above), the pin holes are 1⅔ bricks high. The visor's front is raised two plates higher than the lowest point and then the top of the visor is 3⅔ bricks high.

The front of the visor is angled at 65°, as demonstrated by this upside-down 2 x 1 x 2 slope (60481).

I'm definitely feeling the 'specialised element' vibe here, but I'm sure it will end up as a spaceship windscreen in a MOC at some point.

Hair Braided, Coiled with Bun (8071)

Wait...did we say six new moulds?  Well, we actually meant seven as, for completeness, there is one other new mould that only comes in 43022; a new hair mould that depicts Sir Lewis Hamilton's distinctive hairstyle.

Recolours

  • 1x Windscreen, Curved 6 x 2 x 2 with Ferrari Logo print in Red (6615959 | 7304) in 43014

  • 1x Windscreen, Curved 6 x 2 x 2 with Ferrari Logo, Red Stripes print in Yellow (6611193 | 7304) in 40322

We have seen this windscreen element once before, when it came in transparent with pink printing in LEGO Speed Champions set 77241 2 Fast 2 Furious Honda S2000. Tom analysed this element in his review of Suki's LEGO Honda, if you want more details.

  • 1 x Hair Tousled and Sticking Out on Both Sides in Reddish Brown (6626441 | 5957) in 43014
LeClerc's hair piece is best known as Jay from LEGO® NINJAGO® when black, and Cooper from LEGO® DREAMZzz™ when bright light yellow. In addition to these well-known characters, LeClerc's hair has been used in a few other minifigures in other colours over the years, but this is its first appearance in reddish brown.

New prints

There are stickers in the sets, but there's also a ton of printed elements for all the sponsorship details, in true Formula 1 fashion. I imagine LEGO felt that the teens and young adults, which the LEGO Editions sets are aimed at, may not appreciate multiple pages of stickers to be applied on tricky curved slopes and wedges.

Rare pieces

Elements in only one set that also appear in set 43014

  • 2x Technic Beam 1 x 5 Thin with Axle Holes on Ends in Bright Green (6587298 | 44864, 11478)
  • 1 x Technic Axle and Pin Connector Perpendicular 3L with Centre Pin in Dark Turquoise (6584241 | 42142)
  • 1 x Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Right, Smooth Inner Walls in  Red (6501131 | 5711)
  • 1x Tile 2 x 2 with LEGO Logo Type 2 Print in Yellow (6579957)

A slight aside

Look closely at these two wedges. Aside from being a right and a left version, can you spot another difference between the moulds?

It's interesting to see the Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Right, Smooth Inner Walls in Red (6501131 | 5711) appear again. Its only other use has been in 76285 Spider-Man Mask

Parts 5711 and 5830 are the pair of right and left 6x2 wedges with smooth inner walls, but the Leclerc helmet uses 5711 with part 41748, the older 6x2 wedge mould with ridges

The same strange combination of 5711 and 41748 was also in the Spiderman mask, so both sets have avoided introducing the matching left mould. I wonder why 5830 is not being made in red?

Elements in only two sets that also appear in set 43014

  • 2x Plate Round Corner 2 x 2 in White (6596745 | 7904)
  • 2x Slope Curved 4 x 1 Inverted in Bright Light Blue (6591529 | 13547)

Elements in only one set that appear in 43022

  • 2x Technic Beam 1 x 5 Thin with Axle Holes on Ends in Bright Green (6587298 | 44864)
  • 1x Technic Axle and Pin Connector Perpendicular 3L with Centre Pin Hole in Dark Turquoise (6584241 | 42142, 32184)
  • 2x Plate Special 1 x 3 Rounded with 3 Open Studs in  Yellow (6596975 | 77850)
  • 2x Plate Round Corner 2 x 2 in Yellow (6600240 | 7904)
  • 1x Tile 2 x 2 with LEGO Logo Type 2 Print in Yellow (6579957 | 115202)
  • 1x Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Right, Smooth Inner Walls in Yellow 6501120 | 5711)

Elements in only two sets that appear in 43022

  • 2x Brick Round Corner 4 x 4 x 1 in Yellow (6481578 | 5651)
  • 2x Slope Curved 4 x 1 Inverted in Bright Light Blue (6591529 | 13547)

Stickers

Each set has two sticker sheets, both for the visor. The smaller of the two appears to be the same for both sets and yet they have different identification numbers.

The two sheets contain nine stickers in total, but only three are used: spares are provided as there's an increased chance of messing up when sticking stickers onto this large curved element!

The smaller sheet has one spare of the two required stickers. The larger of the sticker sheets provides options: the long thin sticker (no. 3) can be used and there's a spare if you muck it up; alternatively three smaller stickers (no. 4/5/6) offer a simpler application process if you prefer.

The builds

The base may well start off as a simple construction, but it quickly becomes clear that this is an integrated base that will also be involved in the helmet itself. It has little sub-assemblies with bar connection points that will become important later.

Interestingly, bag one in each set is built as a mirror image of the other. Perhaps the designers felt this would be more aesthetically pleasing if both these Scuderia Ferrari sets were on display next to each other.

At the end of bag one, we have a base with a significant amount of complex snot building on top. Note, I just used those printed cheese slopes to keep me on track when building both sets at the same time!

The complex sub-assemblies just keep coming in bag 2. There are a few subtle colour differences between each set, with yellow 1x1 round tiles for Hamilton and white for Leclerc.

The build continues to follow the same steps for each set, and by the end of bag 3 a complex internal structure has formed. The lower half of the helmet is taking shape by this point, with the curved slopes and new U-shaped windscreen hinging into position.

I was having flashbacks to my head and neck anatomy exams at medical school with those complex innards, so mad e a temporary addition of my own. Apparently everything looks better with googly eyes?

The two new black 4 x 3 x ⅔ curved slopes are used just behind the visors to hide any sneaky views of the inside workings once the transparent visors are in position. Did I mention the internal snotwork was complex? Just look at that sub-assembly that is hinged into position!

When the new visor is attached, the pin holes hold it in place, as it is not designed to be raised. This makes sense as it would be a bit odd to raise the visor to view plain black slopes, but perhaps having the attachment via pin holes angled this way also limits its use in MOCs where tilting would be useful.

Bag 5 completes most of the front of the helmet, with just the back remaining. There's quite a few one-stud and bar-clip connections across the top of the visor and to either side of the Ferarri printed windscreens. These are a little fiddly, and require care to complete.

Most of the new moulds are involved in the outer shell of the helmets. The crown area uses both the Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 2 x 2 Cutout (8008) and Panel 5 x 5 x 3 Corner, Curved Top (8010) as seen in the top image above, while the other large slopes are used on the sides.

Despite the number of different slopes and angles involved, the helmets are amazingly clean and smooth.

Differences

Other than the obvious differences in terms of minifigure, helmet colour and print designs, there are only two differences between the Hamilton and Leclerc versions.

The first I have already mentioned: the initial base section is a mirror image, resulting in the minifigures standing on opposite sides when viewed from the front.  The second is a very small difference in one section of the build that results in a variation in piece count.

Leclerc has 886 elements, while Hamilton has 884 elements. The source of this difference can be found in a sub-assembly at the rear of the model. While Hamilton uses a single 1x4 tile on each side, the red and white colours of Leclrec's helmet require two 1x2 tiles, hence the two extra elements.

Final views

I didn't use the visor stickers; personally I thought the helmets looked better without them. No doubt HP and Richard Mille will be contacting their lawyers over this breach to their sponsorship contract.

The final helmet really looks impressive at this scale. The internal structure is mind-bogglingly complex, but the instructions are clear. Each sub-assembly clicks into place in a most satisfying manner. Yes, there are few gaps – around the forehead area in particular – but honestly, the shaping is so good that only the most pernickety will criticise.

The helmet and stand are integrated and some may wish that the helmet could be removed, but these are display pieces and not for placing on top of the Tuxedo Cat for comedy content.

Here are some official pictures with the visor stickers applied.

Conclusion

The F1 helmet is one of the the most complex and intriguing builds I have ever undertaken when reviewing for New Elementary.

The internals are highly impressive, with intricate sub-assemblies galore. I built the two helmets simultaneously for the purpose of reviewing, but I can't see that building multiples in all the colour variations would be fun unless you are a F1 fan. I see that there's definitely a large market for F1 merchandise, and scaled display helmets are often produced for that market.

Whether you love or hate F1, building one of these sets is an experience, and I am certain that you'll find a technique or parts usage that will be new to your stockpile of techniques for your own creations.

Price wise, at £79.99/ $89.99/ €89.99 for 884 or 886 parts gives a price per piece of 9.0p/ 10.2c/ 10.2c.  Given there are a host of printed parts and 6 new moulds (seven if you count Sir Lewis Hamilton's hair in 43022) then the price does not seem too bad.

On the other hand, the helmets are smaller than you might imagine at 18 x 11 x 13 cm, but heavy thanks to that dense interior.

In June 5925 won't be exclusive to Trans-Clear anymore, it's coming in both Magenta and Blue Violet in set 42704 Heartlake City Grand Hotel.

  2. Really appreciate the review, Elspeth! I have little to no interest in the IP, but I thoroughly enjoyed being able to see some of the elegant and complex techniques the design team used to sculpt these models. Thanks for your work on this one!

  3. Nice review! The introduction of new parts with a 5x5 curve is very neat. The panel is a nice alternative to the 5x5 quarter dome brick (and would work great in transparent colors as a window or windscreen), and the plate's usefulness speaks for itself! I would love to see more 5x5 and 6x6 curved parts in the future (both rarer curves but ones that are used elsewhere in the Lego system).

  4. Not pictured: One of these helmets hilariously (if misguidedly) affixed to the Tuxedo Cat.

    1. Not our style I’m afraid, I’m sure someone else might do that hilarious trick
