Review: 11503 Flower Wall from LEGO® Botanicals

Posted by Eero

At New Elementary, we like LEGO® Botanicals, as they frequently offer us sweet recolours to feature. 11503 Flower Wall has a whopping 25 recolours, totalling about 300 pieces of the 879 in the set. That's a lot! The set also makes a compelling arrangement, and features two new LEGO colours.

Customers seem to like the theme too, as it pumps out goodies all the time. Didn't we only just enjoy Tom's analysis of the new parts in the LEGO Botanicals January line-up? The flowering never ends.

Recolours

This set features two new colours, 430 Warm Pink and 431 Blue Violet. They've appeared already in some January sets, and Elspeth analysed them against her impressive collection of unusual LEGO colours in an earlier article on 430 Warm Pink and 431 Blue Violet

Here, there are only two moulds in both colours, but they are relatively eye-catching and form a major focus of the built set.

  • 16x Bar Holder with Hole and Bar Handle in Warm Pink (6594886 | 23443)
  • 8x Dish 6 x 6 Inverted (Radar) with Solid Studs in Warm Pink (6594853 | 44375)

  • 2x Dish 3 x 3 Inverted [Radar] in Blue Violet (6591737 | 43898)
  • 12x Plant, Leaf/Petal 4 x 6 x 1 1 / 3 in Blue Violet (6594872 | 7096)

This petal was introduced last year and blue violet is the sixth colour of it.

  • 22x Plant, Flower, Peony Rose with 2 Layers in Yellow (6594861 | 5904)
  • 27x Insect, Butterfly in White (6594904 | 80674)

Surprising but welcome recolours.

  • 21x Crown / Flower / Egg Shell Half in Bright Light Blue (6591743 | 39262)
  • 24x Weapon Axe Head, Clip-on (Viking) [Thick Clip] in Dark Pink (6591733 | 53454, 79805)

The eggshell crown has been popular in LEGO Botanicals. It's a cool part and I'm happy to see another colour for it.

  • 3x Dish 6 x 6 Inverted (Radar) with Solid Studs in Magenta (6591735 |  44375)
  • 54x Weapon Axe Head, Clip-on (Viking) [Thick Clip] in Magenta (6591749 | 53454, 79805)

Ah, the beautiful magenta. I look forward to using these pieces in MOCs.

  • 2x Plant, Leaves, Round 2 x 2 x 2/3 with + Axle Hole and 4 Leaf Extensions in Dark Red (6594906 | 15469)
  • 8x Plant, Plate 1 x 1 Round with 3 Leaves in Dark Red (6584875 | 32607)
  • 16x Plant, Fern 2 x 3 x 2 in Dark Red (6594885 | 2682)

Dark red is one of my favourite LEGO colours, so these botanical parts are especially welcome.

  • 24x Technic Brick 1 x 4 [3 Pin Holes] in Medium Nougat (6594903 | 3701)
  • 24x Technic Brick 1 x 8 [7 Pin Holes] in Medium Nougat (6594902 | 3702)

Medium nougat LEGO® Technic bricks make up the "wooden" frame of the flower arrangement. These quantities are useful for modular bases, for example. Medium nougat is a great colour for architectural builds, too.

  • 6x Bar Curved with Axle End and 1 x 1 Round Plate in Bright Green (6527027 | 4042)
  • 4x Technic Axle and Pin Connector Angled #3 - 157.5° in Bright Green (6573945 | 32016, 42128)
  • 2x Technic Axle and Pin Connector Angled #4 - 135° in Sand Green (6545174 | 32192, 42156)

These are more typical LEGO Botanicals recolours, and again very welcome.

  • 20x Dish 4 x 4 Inverted with Open Stud [Radar] in Bright Pink (6560574 | 35394)

This is impressive quantity of bright pink dishes. This version with hollow stud has been around since 2019, but has remained rare in opaque colours. The set doesn't really need the hollow stud, so this is an interesting decision. It makes me wonder if they're beginning to phase out the closed stud version: both moulds being active simultaneously is unusual except during a transition between the two. The closed stud version premiered in orange last year, but hasn't appeared in bright pink before.

  • 3x +1 extra Plate Round 1 x 1 with Open Stud in Bright Light Blue (6596684 | 85861)
  • 8x +1 extra Weapon Bladed Claw Spread in Bright Light Yellow (6594899 | 10187)
  • 5x +2 extra Headwear Accessory Crown Long with Bar in White (6594848 | 25516)
  • 3x Plate Special 2 x 2 with Bar Frame Octagonal, Reinforced, Completely Round Studs in Magenta (6594850 | 75937) – the old "cut studs" version was last seen in magenta in 2005
  • 2x Plate Special, 1 x 1 Stud with 3 x 3 Ring Around in Light Nougat (6594897 | 7610)

Finally, the odds and ends. I like the pointed crown, which could make nice beards in white. Not having a connection inside the crown is a missed opportunity, though. The light nougat ring is an exciting new 2026 piece and you can read more an earlier article by Tom, New moulds in 11509 Flowering Cactus - 3x3 Ring (7610).

Rare parts

There are some more pieces you'll be happy to add to your collection.

The arrangement

The set encourages customisation, but here's the default composition, based on the instructions. The model is very sturdy and pleasantly arranged.

Medium nougat is a great choice for the "wooden" grid. The plants are connected with Technic Beam 1 x 2 with Axle on Side (7244), introduced last year. One friction pin per connector keeps the flowers in place, while an additional axle-pin prevents them from turning without providing unnecessary friction.

I was able to turn the model upside down for the photo above without any pieces falling off. Great job, designers!

From the perspective of a seasoned fan, the new colours dominate the composition – despite consisting only of four different moulds. Yellow and bright light blue add a touch of contrast, but there are no striking colour fireworks to be seen. The whole is relatively harmonic.

I'm not a particularly big fan of the blue violet colour, but this is a strictly personal opinion and doesn't make the set objectively worse.

As builds, the flowers lack a certain wow factor apparent in the best LEGO Botanicals sets. The violet clematises look spotless, but are rather prosaic combinations of six petal-designated pieces as petals. The pink camellias look somewhat mechanical with the clip and bar connections inside, failing to capture the soft elegance of the real flower.

The blue cornflowers, white hydrangea and magenta ranunculuses are brilliant, but these designs are recycled from 10342 Pretty Pink Flower Bouquet (review by me) and 10345 Flower Arrangement (review by Thomas).

Thus, the smallish dark red roses are my favourite: the design is new, elegant and sturdy – and consists mostly of recolours! The small yellow mimosas and pink waxflowers are very simple, but I like them – the yellow especially looks great in the composition.

Double the bloom

An important part of this set's concept is modularity. Two or more can be combined to make larger arrangements, and the instructions encourage to also use flowers from other LEGO Botanicals sets in the mix. To demonstrate this, I was sent two copies of this set.

First, I made a long assembly positioning two sets next to each other. I wanted the model to look more natural, so I switched the places of some flowers to break the symmetry. I first tried this assembly on the driftwood windowsill of my living room.

The set's name is Flower Wall, and the example photos in the instructions show it hanging on a wall. I didn't have many fitting hooks or nails inside the house (my walls are mostly full concrete) but there was a suspicious lone screw anchor in my balcony wall. It looks quite nice there!

Finally, I wanted to get creative as the instructions suggested, so I picked up the Neito Niemen Nenässä model I originally built for New Elementary's Flowerfest in 2023. She became the centerpiece of a square configuration of two sets.

Again, I altered the positions of some blossoms to have a more natural composition. However, I left the large camellias in the corners, as they're very dominant elements.

Conclusion

11503 Flower Wall is a successful flower arrangement and decent introduction to two new colours. There is an excellent selection of recolours, most of which come in ample quantities. The colours are pretty.

The flower designs themselves are not revolutionary, and there have been more convincing blossoms in some of the past sets. As such this is not quite as hot a hit as 10342 Pretty Pink Flower Bouquet or 10314 Dried Flower Centrepiece, for example. I must admit that the standards are high in this theme, and competition is tense.

The price of US$89.99/ £79.99/ 89.99€/ AU$149.99 for 879 pieces is relatively expensive given that there are no minifigures or expensive special parts. Set 10328 Bouquet of Roses, for example, has 57 fewer parts for 59.99€.

You could always build your own trellis, or extend the one supplied. Until they are widely available, you would need to use a different colour to medium nougat. The pieces used are:

  • 8x Plate 2 x 2 (3022)
  • 4x Plate 2 x 4 (3020)
  • 14x Plate 2 x 8 (3034)
  • 24x Technic Brick 1 x 4 [3 Pin Holes] (3701)
  • 24x Technic Brick 1 x 8 [7 Pin Holes] (3702)
  • 12x Tile 2 x 2 with Groove (3068)
  • 18x Tile 2 x 4 with Groove (87079)
  • 8x Tile 2 x 6 (69729)
The pieces needed to connect each flower are:
  • Technic Beam 1 x 2 with Axle on Side (7244)
  • Technic Pin with Friction Ridges Lengthwise with No Center Slots (61332)
  • Technic Axle Pin with Friction Ridges Lengthwise (43093)

In conclusion, 11503 Flower Wall is decent display piece, but not the best this theme has to offer. As a parts pack it's intense, if you're willing to pay for it.
