40891 Stranger Things: WSQK Radio Station

WSQK Radio Station is a setting within Season 5 of Stranger Things.

The LEGO description reads, "Recreate the iconic WSQK radio station interior, featuring a retro DJ booth with a mixer board, tape machine, record player and microphone, plus a laid-back lounge space with a couch and television. Includes Joyce Byers and Sheriff Hopper minifigures, plus a tile printed with an image of the WSQK rubber chicken."

Recolours

There are two recolours in the set.
  • 1x Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 4 x 4 Round Cutout in Sand Green (6584303 | 80015)
  • 1x (plus 1x spare) Minifig Neckwear Beard and Moustache, Short in Dark Tan (6598145 | 93223)

Minifigures

The GwP includes Joyce Byers and Sheriff Hopper minifigures; two minifigures that are not included in the The Creel House set.

Was it was appropriate for these key characters to not be included in the main set? Perhaps with so many characters included there, something had to be left out; but given these two actors get top billing in the show credits you would expect them to be in the main set. There are other characters that you could say are more closely associated with WSQK Radio Station, but it perhaps did not make sense to remove them from the young lineup offered in Creel House (see my review of the LEGO Creel House set).

It's a bonus to get the two other significant characters from the series, but the only exclusive element is Hopper's hefty beard, so they are not too hard to build from other sets and hopefully the beard will be available on Pick a Brick (PaB) in four months' time or so.

We have described the elements used in these figures below, in case you want to build your own for without having the GwP.

Sheriff Hopper

  • Cap in Dark blue (6056241 | 11303) common and available on Pick a Brick (PaB).
  • Minifigure, Head Black Angled Eyebrows, Medium Nougat Cheek Lines and Chin Dimple (4662141) is very common; used in over 40 sets.
  • Torso Aviator Bomber Jacket with Pockets (6554334) has appeared before in 60470 Explorer Train from earlier this year and is available on PaB.
  • Minifigure legs in Dark Tan (4524098 | 73200); common and available on PaB

Joyce Byers

  • Hair Mid-Length, Wavy, Bangs in Reddish Brown (6234159 | 37697), in many previous sets.
  • Minifig Head, Brown Eyebrows, Peach Lips, Beauty Mark, Neutral / Angry Print in Light Nougat (6163442) has been used for nine other characters, including Black Widow and Jyn Erso.
  • Torso, Dark Blue/Red Plaid Jacket, Sand Blue Shirt print, Dark Red Arms in Dark Red (6480152) was also worn by Harry Potter in 76424 Flying Ford Anglia.
  • Minifigure legs in Dark Blue (73200) are common and available on PaB

Decorations

There is one new print; a comedy rubber chicken print in the set. It seems the rubber chicken is the mascot of the radio station – squawk, geddit?

  • 1x Tile 1 x 2 with rubber chicken print in Trans-Clear (6585192)

There is also a small sticker sheet with six stickers; it is a transparent sticker sheet so sticker no. 4, the WSQK logo, is hard to see until placed on the element, and even then it's tricky, as it is placed on a transparent panel!

What could no. 6 mean? No spoilers here!

Build

The little recording studio area is built first. I liked the minibuilds depicting the record player, mic with stand, anglepoise light and sound effects machine.

With the various items in position, the recording studio looks quite fun, with space for one DJ.

Tiled flooring is a nice touch in a GwP. Quite a few of the 2x2 triangle tiles (35787) and the 1x2 stud notch tiles (5092 and 5091) are needed to complete the floor.

Once completed, there's a front area with couch, telephone, radio and retro television.

Conclusion

Although the booth is by nature a dull shape, this is a beautiful GwP with unexpected level of detail and finesse.

Sheriff Hopper and Joyce are wonderful minifigures to add to the GwP but the reused faces and torsos make them appear a bit more like generic minifigures. On the other hand, the likenesses are great and had they used exclusive prints, many who are unable to the GwP would have been disappointed.

This GwP is a fun little build and will go especially well with the WSQK van included in 11370 Stranger Things: The Creel House. The radio station is not essential to the other set, but can sit comfortably alongside, thanks to the van.
