New mould

Plant, Leaf 6 x 8 x 1 2/3 (7571)

  • 96x Plant, Leaf 6 x 8 x 1 2/3 in Earth Green/ Dark Green (6560449 | 7571)

With nearly 100 in the set, there's plenty of this new mould supplied, albeit only in dark green at present.

The leaf is 6 modules wide at its widest point and 8 modules in length.  When the two antistuds are connected to a base plate, the stem portion sits 5 plates high, while the tip is 4 plates high.

There are four hollow stud attachment points: two on the stem of the leaf that has a rounded end, and then a single hollow stud with anti-stud on the underside of the leaf on each side of the central lobe.

The two anti-studs on the underside are 5 modules apart.

The curve of the leaf is 5 modules in length, you can see how the curve flattens towards the stem of the leaf.  This makes is a bit tricky to try and find matching curves.

It seems similar to the profile of the 3 x 1 curved slope family (e.g. 50950) but the closest matches we found were actually the two other leaves:
  • Leaf 2 x 6 x 1 with 2 Studs in Sand Green (3565)
  • Leaf/Petal 4 x 6 x 1 1 / 3 in Magenta (7096)

The leaf family has certainly been growing with many more shapely leaves added to the LEGO greenhouse. In part this is thanks to the success of the LEGO® Botanicals theme of course.

A selection of some of the leaf element family are shown above in decreasing size order from left to right:
  • Plant, Leaf 6 x 8 x 1 2/3 in Dark Green ( 7571)
  • Plant, Leaves 6 x 5 in Dark Green (2417)
  • Plant, Palm Leaf Small in Dark Green (6148)
  • Plant, Leaf/Petal 4 x 6 x 1 1 / 3 in Magenta (7096)
  • Plant, Leaf 2 x 6 x 1 with 2 Studs in Sand Green ((3565)
  • Plant, Fern 3 x 4 x 2 in Satin Trans-Blue (5151)
  • Plant, Leaves Stacked 4 x 5 x 1 2/3 in Dark Green  (5058)
  • Plant, Leaves 4 x 3 in Sand Green (2423)
  • Plant, Fern 2 x 3 x 2 in Green (2682)
  • Plant, Round 3 x 3 - 3 Leaves in Bright Green (7264)
  • Plant, Plate 1 x 1 Round with 3 Leaves in Lime (32607)

Does it stack?

Why yes, it does. In the upper image above, the studs all connect, making a very sturdy stack. They also stack at 180°.

The curved nature of the leaves means that they also stack evenly when placed at 90° angles to each other.

Mrs Claus is enjoying decorating a gingerbread house using her particularly cute icing piping bag! It's just a shame the lovely little printed 1x1 plate (6337618) from Holiday Elf in LEGO® Minifigures Series 23 couldn't be utilised in this set. Mrs Claus can only dream!

Build

There are 24 bags of parts in the set, the perfect number to use the set as an Advent Calendar resulting in a complete LEGO Christmas tree at the end of the Advent period. Alternatively, you can build it as an individual or with a group using the instruction booklets concurrently.

The final booklet shows how to attach each section to complete the build and then dismantle it once more for storage in the sturdy box, ready to go back on display the next year. There's also a smaller box inside for the minifigures, reindeer and the sleigh to keep them all safely together.

Building the tree

The base

The first section to be built is the base, which uses a whole host of colours and brackets and the beating heart of the LEGO® Technic play feature inside: a rotation function.

There's a nice technique using clips and bars to attach each of the four corners. The axles at either side can be used to turn the main central gear via smaller gears and a worm gear. The underside uses rubber tyres to increase the stability of the final build on smooth or shiny surfaces.

Middle section

The main structure of the tree are the two floors of rooms within the tree trunk. The sides are colour-coded bright green or orange; very helpful when assembling the model. The central rotating axle in the base continues up the model to rotate both the hands of the clock and the mini-Christmas tree.

The kitchen and cafeteria areas are shown above with 14 of the new leaf elements used in a semi-circular distribution.  Each of the rooms are built in the same manner although the contents of each room are obviously different.

The control centre of the Santa operations is detailed, mainly with stickers and of course the new Panel 1 x 6 x 5 with Green/Yellow Tracking Monitor (6542150). The empty Mixels cup joints on each side are used to attach the 'door' branches that open out to reveal the interior in the completed model.

Each of the four rooms are built separately and then slotted into place connected securely with clips and bars. With the branches opened, the two floors can be seen with the operations area above the kitchen/cafeteria area.

At the other side, there is a toy workshop area with a sewing machine, painting area and some giftwrapped presents. The upper floor seems to be a gaming room for the playful elves with some arcade games.

Top section

The bare-bones skeleton of the top of the tree shows the various bar connections used to connect the leaves. The 2 x 2 plate with round bar frame (7068) is no longer rare, but have only been in five other sets in black, so may not be in everyone's collections yet. There are six spiked mace in opal trans-clear (5686) in the set, the most in any one set so far, and these are used to give the star some extra sparkles.

The top of the tree is built in three main sections; the central star area and then two side branches that are attached with bars and clips as shown above.  The whole top section is attached to the rest of the tree with a Mixels ball joint.

Once the side branches are in place, the top section looks the part. The star is pretty and, by this stage, is a nice break from building the frame and attaching leaves!

Completed model

The completed model is quite large – and heavy, as it is dense on the inside of the 'trunk' area. With the branches all in their closed position, it is a squat little tree.  On completion,  I realised that you are supposed to organise the leaves in a particular manner, with some more steeply angled while others stick out.  Much like a real Christmas tree, there's a tendency for the leaves and branches to simply do their own thing.

I had a second go at organising the large leaves to try and mimic the set images, but it was quite a frustrating task. Leaves would ping off and some just wouldn't angle correctly despite my attempts to convince them otherwise. I suppose like real Christmas trees, you are going to have to pick up some dropped leaves while this tree is on display.

Side builds

Santa and his sleigh

Santa gets a little red sleigh with space for one or two gifts and his sack. Times are tough and only one reindeer remains employed to pull the sleigh this year.  There's a couple of accessories added to the other minifigures and plushies, Skiing Elf gets some skis, while Multitasking Elf gets some extra arms to help, and there's some headwear for the reindeer and snowman plush.

Cataclaws

Lets not forget Cataclaws, the LEGO marketing cat who first appeared in 2023 for LEGO's Play Is Your Superpower campaign, and then returned for another festive marketing campaign in 2024.
*cat toys not included

It's not entirely clear why a hugely oversized cat appears in this set to be honest.  It feels like maybe it was sitting on someone's desk and randomly included in this Christmas set.  Sadly it's too big to feel part of the set,  so it will sit by itself off to one side wondering why the tree is so small.

I think I'd rather have this posable version of Cataclaws, from one of the adverts, as a separate set.

Boxing day

Keep the boxes for this set folks! When it's time to pack up your tree for another year, the instruction booklet guides you.  I only dismantled the tree once to test it out, and there were definitely a few leaves pinging off in the process but nothing too tragic.

Conclusion

Starting with the good points: this is a large set that actually makes a squat but impressively sized tree, considering it is a LEGO model.  The new coloured decorations are nice and the star at the top is a lovely touch. The ability to build as a family, perhaps even over the 24-day Advent period, is a bonus, as is the ability to partially deconstruct the model back into the sturdy box for the following year.

The cost is £269.99/ $329.99/ €299.99 which gives a price per piece of 8.5p/10.4c/9.5c. While this is not a bargain for a 3171 piece set, there is a good mix of parts, but some high numbers of small parts too, e.g. 102x Plate Special 8-Sided Crystal/Gem 1 x 1 x 2/3 (6287309 | 65092). This is a lot to spend on a Christmas tree of course, especially one that is just 46cm tall.

There's a fair amount going on in the set with the opening branches and the internal rooms, but I'm not sure that they were actually needed. However the rooms and play features definitely improve the building experience, as building a larger tree out of LEGO would be fairly tedious. It's just that this hybrid of squat tree with tough-to-access playset inside doesn't quite hit the mark.
