Parts & minifigures review: 21360 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory from LEGO® Ideas

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

The latest set to be announced from LEGO® Ideas is 21360 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The set is based on the 1971 movie of the same name, via the original LEGO Ideas submission from 2PPL.

There are some fun new minifigures, recolours and printed elements to drool over so let's go where nobody ever goes in... and nobody ever comes out.

Lego Ideas 21360 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Background

The original submission to LEGO Ideas by fan designers Roberto Ceruti and Jody Padulano (known as 2PPL) was a tribute to the 1964 Roald Dahl children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or rather, later media that was based upon it.

It included a mix of minifigures based upon those in the West End musical, a chocolate bridge seen in the updated 2005 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and of course the famous chocolate waterfall as seen in the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

The final set is based on the original 1971 movie. We had the chance to speak to the LEGO designers and the fan designers, to ask more.

It's a balance between the bricks that we have available, the original fan submission, our internal design team as well as Warner Brothers who is owns the the property.... We asked, does this feel like the 1971 version? That's where we were able to bridge between the fan design and then this version.

Laura Perron, Senior Product Designer

More on that when we build the model, but first let's see the new elements.

New mould

There is one new mould in the set. Willy Wonka's top hat with hair in the new LEGO Ochre Yellow colour is a new mould depicting Gene Wilder's characteristic mop of blonde hair.

  • 1x Dark Orange top hat with wavy hair in Ochre Yellow (6546837 | 113605)

Recolours

There are 10 new recoloured elements.

  • 1x Panel 6 x 5 x 3 1/3 Curved Top in Reddish Brown (6568558 | 5065)
  • 2x Wedge Plate 6 x 12 Left in Reddish Brown (6564875 | 30355)
  • 2x Wedge Plate 6 x 12 Right in Reddish Brown (6564874 | 30356)

  • 2x Hair Short Wavy with Side Part in Green (6569020 | 11256)
  • 5x +1 spare Teacup in Yellow (6564871 | 38014)
  • 2x Helmet Round Sphere with Small Hole in Trans-Dark Pink (6577236 | 51283)
  • 2x +1 spare Dome 1 x 1 x 2/3 in Trans-Red (6564868 | 6908)
  • 1x Skirt Short, Angular in Red (6572279 | 65753)
Red Alert! The trans-red 1x1 dome is welcome, as all sorts of computers, machines, robots and gadgetry need a red light.

The yellow teacups are a particularly notable recolour, required to recreate the famous scene when Wonka takes a bite out of the 'buttercup' as he leads the children on a tour of his factory.

  • 8x Brick Arch 1 x 12 x 3 Raised Arch with 5 Cross Supports in Medium Nougat (6564870 | 18838)
  • 2x Brick Arch 1 x 3 x 1 2/3 Curved Top in Blue (6564872 | 5843)

New print

There are 5 new prints in total.

  • 2x Dish 3 x 3 with White Mushroom Spots print in Red (6560535)

  • 2x Dish 4 x 4 with Swirl print in Trans-Clear (6560534)

  • 2x Plate Round 2 x 2 with Rounded Bottom with Fruit Segments print in Trans-Clear (6564655)
Instead of doing different lollipops with multiple decorations, we can just do two. If they're transparent, then you can just change the background element, and then you get a completely different colour. It was a really clever way that Crisy [Dyment] designed them that gives a lot of variety on how you can use them.
Laura Perron, Senior Product Designer

  • 1x Dish 8 x 8 with Umbrella Pattern of 11 Blue Shapes print in White (6560536)
This new print used for the canopy of the boat S. S. Wonkatania that sails along the chocolate river. The regularity of this design would make it interesting to use in a sci-fi model, and trying to continue the 11-sided shape would be an interesting challenge.
  • 5x Tile 1 x 2 with Wonka's Golden Ticket print in Pearl Gold (6600499).
The 5 tickets mean that each child in the set can hold their own golden ticket. Sadly the tile is pearl gold rather than metallic. Because printing on metallic gold is more prone to wear, and the ticket is designed to be held by a minifigure's hand, this would not have met LEGO standards.

Minifigures

The set has 9 minifigures. Willy Wonka and the 5 lucky children with their golden tickets were essential inclusions, of course.

The factory is a little short-staffed with only two Oompa Loompas, to stay within budget restraints. A bonus extra is Grandpa Joe, as none of the other parents or guardians feature. LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan David Scott explained his inclusion:
I think Grandpa Joe is so integral to Charlie's story. He's the one that encourages him to spend the money and get the chocolate bar, which gives him the ticket. At the very end, all the other parents go off with their kids; Grandpa Joe stays there.
Jordan David Scott, LEGO Ideas Design Manager

In terms of new parts, the new or rarer elements that are included for each minifigure are detailed below.

Willy Wonka

  • Dark Orange top hat with wavy hair in Ochre Yellow (6546837 | 113605) is a new mould
  • Minifig Head with print in Light Nougat (6546034)
  • Torso with print in Dark Purple (6572499)
  • Legs with print in Tan (6560532)

Willy Wonka has some lovely printing on his torso: the waistcoat is a nice pink metallic print. His purple velvet frock coat continues only on the front of his legs, while the sides and back have no coat print.

Crisy Dyment was the graphic designer involved in this set and she pointed out the source of Wonka's face print:
When we work on minifigures we can sometimes decide what expression to use. I'm sure you guys have seen that 'Tell me more' meme? That is what his second face is based on... I literally had that meme on my backdrop as I was working on this.

Crisy Dyment, LEGO Graphic Designer

Charlie Bucket

As the protagonist, Charlie has no new elements and his clothing is unprinted, but he is a poor boy from a poor family.  His hair uses the bushy and wavy hair in Tan (6414946 | 3061) which we have seen before for  three other minifigures including  Professor Mad-Eye Moody. Charlie's head (6472405) was also used for Anakin and Ernie Macmillan minifigures.

Grandpa Joe

  • Minifig Head with moustache in Light Nougat (6546037)
  • Torso, Light Bluish Grey Striped Suit, Jacket, Dark Blue Tie, White Shirt print, Black Arms, Light Nougat Hands in Black (6490487) has appeared twice before.

Violet Beauregarde

Veruca Salt

  • Minifig Head Dark Brown Eyebrows, Mean Smile/Angry in Light Nougat (6486012) also used once before for Pansy Parkinson in 76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class
  • Torso with print in Red (5672277)
  • Skirt Short, Angular in Red (6572279 | 65753, 78134) is a recolour

Mike Teevee

  • Wide Brim Hat  in White (6564867 | 13565) last seen in 2013 in LEGO® The Lone Ranger sets
  • Torso with print in Bright Light Yellow (6572266)

Mike also has a neck bracket so he can wear his cowboy hat slung over the back of his neck, just like in the movie.

Augustus Gloop

  • Minifig Head with chocolate face print in Light Nougat (6560530)
  • Torso with print in Dark Bluish Gray (6571681)
  • Legs with print in Dark Bluish Gray (6546036 )
Augustus Gloop's chocolate covered face is highly entertaining.  It would also work for Bruce Bogtrotter from another of Roald Dahl's books – Bruce is a child who has to eat an entire chocolate cake, if you are not familiar with Matilda.

Oompa Loompa Male & Female

  • Hair Short Wavy with Side Part in Green (6569020 | 11256) is a recolour
  • Minifig Head with print in Orange (6546040)
  • Minifig Head with print in Orange (6546041)
  • Torso with print in Dark Orange (6572273)
There are only two Oompa Loompas, but they do have different heads.
We included two... a male and female kind...  one that has eye eyelashes and one that doesn't because in researching the film, there were both male and female actors. We wanted to make sure we were authentic to that.

Crisy Dyment, LEGO Graphic Designer

There's no stripey socks or funky shoes, but Crisy mentioned striking a balance with details and not having prints that are too distracting.

Rare elements

Element in one other set

  • 4x  Whip  in Bright Green (6498803 | 75216, 88704)
  • 1x Brick Round 1 x 1 diameter Tube with 90 Degree Elbow in Reddish Orange (6529503 | 25214)
  • 2x Minifig Head [Vented Stud ] in Trans-Orange  (6513998 | 28621)
  • 1x Plate 1 x 1 x 2/3 with Open Stud in Lime (6561722 | 86996)
  • 11x  Flower 1 x 1 with 5 Petals in Dark Blue (6495167 | 24866)
  • 8x Brick Curved 1 x 2 x 1 with Curved Top in Dark Red (6560653 | 5841)
  • 3x Brick Special 1 x 2 Palisade in Dark Red (6506542 | 30136)
  • 1x Hair, Parted Bangs, Ringlets in Reddish Brown (6540710 | 5352)
  • 1x Slope 18° 4 x 2 in Medium Nougat (6535835 | 30363)
  • 1x Slope Inverted 33° 3 x 2  in Medium Nougat (6535832 | 3747)

Sticker sheet

The sticker sheet includes some decorations for the S. S. Wonkatania (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12). Sticker 8 is the transmission of Mike Teevee when he decides to test Wonkavision. Sticker 6 is Charlie Bucket's contract that he signs. Sticker 7 is the half picture that hangs in Wonka's whimsical office where everything is in half.  Finally, sticker 10 is the lickable wallpaper that tastes yummy.

There is an Easter egg in the contract at the bottom that the designers mentioned:
If you look at the contract in Wonka's office, you'll see a certain series of  initials, and those relate back to the two fan designers and people that are important to them in their lives.
