71813 Wolf Mask Shadow Dojo is one of the larger sets in the March 2024 LEGO® NINJAGO® wave; part of Dragons Rising Season 2. The striking structure has some appealing colours, plenty of play features and 8 minifigures. Let's take a closer look at all the details.

New moulds - almost!

The inventory in the building instructions indicates that the three wedge slopes pictured above should be the newer mould variants, 5830 & 5711 - with thicker side walls and no internal ribs. But my set came with a full compliment of the older mould, 41748 & 41747. You can see a comparison picture on Rebrickable. Functionally there is no difference, but if you do take into consideration the new moulds, then the following stats are appropriate:

  • 1x Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Left, Smooth Inner Walls (6528007 | 5830) and 1x Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Right, Smooth Inner Walls (6501125 | 5711) in Dark Stone Grey/Dark Bluish Gray - both also appear in 75377 Invisible Hand
  • 1x Wedge Curved 6 x 2 Right, Smooth Inner Walls in Black (6501118 | 5711) - unique to this set

Elements of interest

A handful of recolours appear in the set, all currently unique:

  • 2x Glass for Window 1 x 4 x 6 in Sand Blue (6478107 | 35295)
  • 6x Windscreen 5 x 2 x 1 2/3 in Bright Reddish Violet/Magenta (6478105 | 35271)
  • 2x Hinge Brick 1 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Horizontal End in Magenta (6478106 | 53028)
The other elements are recolours which have only been in a limited number of other sets to date:

Printed pieces

Two nice printed parts are included (the remaining decorated elements are all stickers):

  • 1x Dish 6x6 Inverted (Radar) with Eye, Red Iris with Craters, Black Pupil print in Black (6473843 | 44375) - unique here
  • 1x Minifig Shield Round Bowed with Gold Dragon, Red Eyes, Fans print in Warm Gold/Pearl Gold (6464346 | 105523) - also in 71804 Arin's Battle Mech and 71809 Egalt the Master Dragon

The Build

The first part of the set to be built is the tournament square which sits on its own separate patch of landscape. The two fighting positions are at the end of transparent bars which gives the effect of the minifigures fighting in mid air, providing plenty of opportunities for the Ninjas to vanquish the baddies.

The two rockwork supports are the next portions to be constructed, before the dojo building sits on the platform which joins the pillars. The techniques are mostly straightforward, although there is a bit of SNOT work required to clad the pillars with the rock elements. Long Technic bricks give the platform structure some strength. The foliage sprinkled around gives the set a mor organic feel and hides some of the straight lines while providing some more visual interest.  The wolf head requires a bit more SNOT building and comes together nicely when each element is added.

The open back allows for plenty of access to the play features - including rock steps for the Ninjas to climb on their way up to the Dojo platform. But beware! If you step on the wrong part of the floor in the middle, a trapdoor will plunge you back to the ground below. Ouch.

There are two zip lines running from the platform down to the ground which perhaps are a better option than the trapdoor. The Ninjas each have special sickle weapons which act as hooks so that they can slide down the zip lines with ease. There is also a hidden cave in one of the supports, which itself hides a secret which I won't spoil for you.

Original build - Lupine Temple

I liked the architectural design elements from the set, but was less keen on the rock-work. So I challenged myself to make a smaller facade with just the parts included in the set.

I constructed this Lupine Temple. Two guardians flank the alcoves and a looming moon above a huge medallion offsets the downsized magenta highlights. At just 6 modules deep it will easily sit on a shelf for display.

Conclusion

The model was a fairly straightforward build with a good selection of well-printed minifigures and attractive design, along with plenty of play features to keep younger fans occupied. There are some interesting elements which may appeal to MOC builders, but I feel that the price is a little high for the size of the finished model.
