LEGO® Ideas review: 21339 BTS Dynamite

Posted by tobymac

Today we’re taking a look at LEGO® Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite, a set that uniquely has been based on a music video. More specifically, the music video for Dynamite by BTS. For the uninitiated, BTS is a mega popular Korean K-Pop band with a massive worldwide following.

21339 Dynamite gathered the required 10,000 supporters to enter the LEGO Ideas review process before being approved in February 2022 to become an actual LEGO set.

Right off the bat I'll say I don’t know much about BTS other than that their music is not something I would normally listen to. But of course there's no problem with you enjoying their music! Therefore, this review will mainly focus on the elements and build, and I’ll leave it up to you to decide if the set is a true depiction of the music video. For those who don’t know the song, here it is:

New elements

The set brings us 1 new mold in 2 different colors which will be discussed in the minifigures section. First, there are 2 recolors:

  • Windscreen 4 x 4 x 1 2/3 Canopy Half Sphere with Handle in Bright Pink (6424856 | 18990)
  • Wedge Plate 2 x 2 Cut Corner in Medium Lavender (6424858 | 26601)

Aside from the minifigures, there are no new printed parts. Instead the set comes with 4(!) sticker sheets.

Minifigures

All band members are represented in the set which means we get 7 minifigures. I was unable to distinguish the different heads in the back of the instructions, as it’s printed pretty small, so I don’t know which Element ID goes with which head.

RM comes with a recolor for Hair Swept Left Tousled in Medium Azure (6436401 | 23186), a new Light Nougat dual sided printed head, and a new print for Torso in Black (6436424). His legs are rare in Nougat (6353940), only appearing in a HP set and a book prior.

Jungkook has a new mold for in Hair, Parted, Mid-Length in Black (6420572 | 3277), a new Light Nougat dual sided printed head and a new print for Torso in Dark Tan (6436245).

Jimin comes with a rare hair piece: Hair Swept Back with Slight Widow's Peak and Short Side Burns in Dark Tan (6436300 | 25972) which has only appeared in 75213 Star Wars Advent Calendar 2018. The Light Nougat dual sided printed head is new, as is the Torso in Green (6436307).

J-Hope is the only figure without mentionable hair, but they do have a new Light Nougat dual sided printed head, and a new print for Torso in Red (6436358).

Jin has a recolor for Hair Tousled, Short in Dark Orange (6424855 | 36762), which also appeared in Speed Champions 76915 Pagani Utopia. The Light Nougat dual sided printed head and Torso in Dark Red (6436400) are also new.

V is the other figure with rare Dark Tan hair: Hair Short Wavy with Center Part in Dark Tan (6424854 | 26139) has appeared one time in 2018 in Gift With Purchase set 40300 Han Solo Mudtrooper. The Light Nougat dual sided printed head is new, as is the Torso in Dark Green (6436295).

Suga has the same new molded Hair, Parted, Mid-Length as Jungkook, but here in Dark Brown (6436364 | 3277). And like all other figures, the Light Nougat dual sided printed head and Torso in Dark Bluish Grey (6436391) are new.

Rare elements

Aside from the new elements, there are some others that are worth mentioning.

  • Window Frame 1 x 3 x 3 in Black (6424625 | 51239) was introduced in January in Friends set 41732.
  • Door 1 x 4 x 6 Smooth with Chamfered Handle Plinth in Sand Green (6346547 | 35291) has only been seen in 10292 Friends - The Apartments from 2021.
  • Cupboard 2 x 3 x 5 in White (6424600 | 2656) and Door 3 x 5 in Transparent/ Trans-Clear (6424601 | 2657) were introduced in January 2023, and this is the first appearance outside the Friends theme.
  • Tile Special, Splat with Rounded Sides in Light Purple/ Bright Pink (6424476 | 80677) is also from January 2023, and has appeared in 3 sets.
  • Plate Round 1 x 2 Half Circle with Stud (Jumper) in Medium Stone Grey/ Light Bluish Gray
  • (6420741 | 1745) came first in 2023 as well.

And even though there are no new prints outside the minifigures, we do find some rare prints in the record store.

  • Forget about Tile 2 x 2 with Groove and Music Sheet Print in White (6288537 | 66586), that one turned out to be not so rare and can be found in 8 other sets. I mixed this one up with another music sheet print.
  • Tile 2 x 2 with Groove and Pixelated Blue and Orange Squares Print in White (6290444 | 66845) has appeared in 2 sets since 2020.
  • Tile 2 x 2 with Large Round Radar Display print in White (6428487 | 102324) has only been seen in 2022 in 10497 Galaxy Explorer.
  • Tile 2 x 2 with Groove and Elephants Silhouette, Sunset print in Brick Yellow/ Tan (6331411 | 75504) was seen twice before.
  • Tile Round 2 x 2 with Vinyl Record, Bright Light Orange Center, Magenta Music Note print in  Black (6431014 | 102488) has appeared in 2 sets from 2023.
  • Tile 2 x 2 with Pixelated Honeycomb print in Cool Yellow/ Bright Light Yellow (6335367 | 76969) has appeared in 3 other sets.

The build

The build starts off with an ice cream truck. I don’t mind it being a bit small, though a sprinkles print here would have been fun. Another side build is the sign, including the black screen (or solar panel?) attached to it.

I didn’t expect to find Technic in a K-Pop set, but underneath the stage we find a cluster of gears. The minifigs can stand on the stud on the end of the axles. In the sides of the stage is an opening where you can access the gears, allowing the minifigures to spin.

On to the main stage. On the right side, we construct a small record store and I do like all of the album covers. On the side of the store is the basketball hoop.

To the left is a donut store with a large donut on the roof. The donut store itself has some nice detail, although, please pay no attention to the door which I placed on the wrong side.

At the center of the build is a mostly empty space aside from a fire hydrant and a bulky parking meter, and going through the Sand Green door brings us to the stage.

Conclusion

With my limited knowledge of the band, I think the set is a decent representation of the music video. The spaces have been considerably downsized, although that's in line with the original fan design.

I do feel the look of the set is a bit bland, with few exciting colors jumping out, but again this is very similar to the music video it's based on. There are also enough small details scattered throughout the build to give the right look.

Focusing on just the parts; with just 2 recolors for regular parts there is nothing particularly special that this set can offer your MOC. The minifig parts bring some new options for figures to inhabit your display, but that’s it.

In general, I think the set will mostly appeal to BTS fans. I know the BTS army is large, and I guess the hope is for this set to guide some of them into the world of LEGO, and new recruits are always welcome in the AFOL community.

  1. Hmm, I guess that since these heads and torsos are licensed, they won't end up on the Pick-A-Brick site anytime soon. It's a shame.

    1. And why the "they" in the description of J-Hope? J-Hope doesn't seem to be a trans person(?)...

    2. That's how they speak in the US nowadays. It's considered extremely un-PC to address someone by he or she, so they call anybody they.
