NEXOGON: Hangar & launch tube

Posted by Admin
Duncan Lindbo returns today with this third set of creations in our parts festival using the LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS™ piece Rotor w/ 4.85 hole, a.k.a. the Nexogon.

This build was inspired by a shape Tim built in his original post on the Nexogon's geometry. My original thought was that that would serve as a good base for a micro-scale train yard turntable, but trains aren't really my jam, so instead I built a spaceship hangar with a launch tube, inspired by the likes of Battlestar Galactica and EVE: Valkyrie.

The hangar holds up to six ships, which each sit in their own maintenance bay. When it comes time to launch, the central turntable's crane arm loads the ship onto the launch rails, the turntable aligns itself with the launch tube, and the ship accelerates down the rails into space.

I used a Nexogon for the floors of each maintenance bay, and another Nexogon for the launch tube hatch.

I was pretty pleased with the way the hexagonal geometry of the under-frame worked out. I'm not sure if it's 100% legal, but it's so close I'm betting it is.

I included a gear mechanism to turn the central turntable, but there's a fair amount of friction along it's sides so it's sort of stiff. This could probably be remedied by using plates instead of the 4x8 half-circle bricks I used.

  1. That is a fantastic build! Great work!

Are the 1x1 pyramid parts on the Ice Planet ship genuine LEGO? I don't recognize them.

    1. They're originally from Nexo Knights but have since spread to Super Hero Girls, amongst others. The design ID is 22388.

    2. Cool. Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely need to grab some of those.

  2. This is superb, I always loved the launched tubes in Battlestar Galactica, both incarnations! What I really love about this though is those fantastic little micro scale ships!
