72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots

Set 72423 LEGO Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots

This 1400+ piece character model is poseable LEGO versions of the beloved central characters, Shrek and Donkey, standing over the teal-coloured swamp that Shrek calls home.

Flitting about them is Puss in Boots, in minifigure form, and he looks a bit undersized to me. Having looked at images of the original, he's a bit smaller than he should be but not as bad as I thought. Perhaps it is simply the fact he is a minifigure that feels odd.

The LEGO Puss in Boots minifigure looks fantastic with its newly created head, and his cavalier hat which also looks to be new, being more rounded than the Hat Musketeer (93554) used from 2011 to 2014. I love how the fur pattern on his torso is in the same LEGO design style as animal minifigure costumes.

Donkey's pose is a perfect capturing of all the silliness of this character. Those little hoofs! My favourite parts usage here are the white ruffles of fur on his chest using Plate Special 2 x 3 with Rocks (27261).

You should be able to get quite a few emotions out of Donkey as his neck turns, his jaw opens and his ears can be angled. It seems he and his rock can be removed from the main model for separate display, but I don't think he can be removed from his rock as there are no pictures of this available.

The press pack images showed no pictures from the rear but I could grab this from the 360° spin video just to show you how adorably shaped Shrek's rear is! The gathering on the tunic, and the belt being set at an angle to accommodate Shrek's bum and belly are wonderfully executed – it must have been quite a design challenge.

The press pack has no images of Shrek removed from the swamp, so perhaps he is built into his base too.

He does have some funny references inside his tummy!

We haven't had time to explore the recolours, but surely some of those rounded pieces are new to lime green? What can you see?

Lego 72423 Buildable Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots - PR reveal

40923 Shrek, Donkey & Gingy from LEGO® BrickHeadz™

It's quite fun to see Shrek and Donkey provided in two sizes with this reveal! We even get the 'Beware Ogre' sign again.

No Puss in Boots here: instead we get a LEGO Gingy, the gingerbread man, who looks rather clownish and frightening to me!

Shrek is of the standard 4x4 LEGO BrickHeadz body size, while the other characters are 3x3.

  1. It looks like 5264 (Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Clip on Bottom) in Lime are used for Shreks finger joints and I count a nice 8 minimum and also 6908 (Brick, Round 1 x 1 x 2/3 Dome Top) used for his fingertips is a Lime recolor as well. Those will be really useful and appreciated for Botanical mocs. I can't quite figure out what is used to recreate Shrek's ears -- it almost looks like the minifigure, utensil telescope (64644), which would also be a Lime recolor. Slope, Curved 3 x 2 Left/Right (6822/6823) in Lime for the back of his head are recolors as well, it seems. I can see that there are more but I'm still learning how to identify elements by category and names/numbers quickly. Also, the plume feather (64647) used for the tip of Donkey's tail in Dark Bluish Gray is also a recolor, it appears.

    1. Oops, thanks to your screenshot of the back of Shrek's head, I was able to see that his ears are NOT built with the utensil telescope (64644) after all. I would have liked to see that piece in Lime though. A mistake of wishful thinking, perhaps, lol.

  2. Are the ears built with 20482 (Lime Tile, Round 1 x 1 with Bar and Small Pin Hole) and 23443 (Lime Bar Holder with Handle)?

    1. I def think you are right on both counts. In which case, neither of those two would be new recolors.
