Three more LEGO® Wednesday sets were announced earlier this year, so let's take a look at one of these October releases: 76785 Thing's Apartment.
The sets are all tie-ins related to the Wednesday Netflix TV series, a spin-off of The Addams Family focusing on the teenage daughter's adventures at school. 76785 Thing's Apartment is based on a scene where Wednesday's roommate Enid Sinclair makes Thing its own home.

In the Tim Burton-directed season 2 opening episode, Wednesday's roommate Enid creates a home for Thing, to help it feel like it has a place to belong at Nevermore Academy. This home has been transformed into LEGO form for 76785 Thing's Apartment, and a new mould has been included.
New mould: Plate 1 x 2 with Handle (7508)

- 5x Plate 1 x 2 with Handle in Tan (6551994 | 7508)
This is the big brother to Plate Special 1 x 1 Rounded with Handle (26047) – amazingly, the one-stud version has been around since 2016. We first used it in The New Black parts festival and I took a look at the geometry of LEGO part 26047 back then. Let's compare them, as well as some other pieces:

Conclusion
For fans of the Netflix series, this is a fun set that represents a heartwarming moment in the thrilling first episode of season 2. Thing is a popular character and offers some fun ways to play, but its poseability is limited by his lack of finger joints..jpeg)
There's some cute little builds and I can imagine younger fans enjoying the play features. The set does rely on the stickers for decoration rather than detailed build techniques.

Nice review! I suspect that besides keeping the scale in check, giving Thing just one hinge per finger also keeps the design a bit more stable for play (since if there were more than one joint it'd be easier for kids to accidentally bend the fingers out of shape when trying to walk him around or balance him on his fingertips). Sort of like how Ninjago mechs aimed at younger kids tend to have fixed knee and elbow joints so kids can stomp 'em around without the knees buckling, and can set them up in balanced poses without too much fiddling about.
ReplyDeleteThe nail polish bottle and nail polish tiles are a super cute play feature! And I'm also amused by some of Thing's other accessories like the fidget spinner! I have not watched the Wednesday TV series at all, but I'm definitely tickled by this sort of humor.
It surprises me a bit that the brick-built version of Thing is a slightly pallid Brick Yellow, but the minidoll-scale version is Light Nougat. Neither is a perfect match for Thing's corpselike appearance in the series from what I've seen — Brick Yellow is a bit too jaundiced, while Light Nougat is a little too warm and healthy-looking — and yet either could work fine as an approximation. Even so, the inconsistency between scales feels a little unusual. I suppose perhaps Brick Yellow simply required fewer recolors for the brick-built version, even though Light Nougat building elements have become quite a bit more plentiful than they used to be.
The chest construction looks great, particularly how elegantly it unfolds into a two-story interior space while still leaving ample room for storage in the lid. I could definitely imagine a similar build being used for a pirate-themed MOC or promotional set, perhaps with gold trim to help it feel more like a treasure chest than an old-fashioned school trunk.
Thanks for the detailed review!
