LEGO® Speed Champions review: 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 & 76912 Fast and Furious Dodge Charger

In a surprising move, LEGO® Speed Champions have expanded their remit to include vehicles with a second license. The first two in this potential range of iconic movie & TV vehicles (if indeed this turns out to be a continuing feature) depict vehicles that LEGO has tackled in other themes before at larger scales.

76911 007 Aston Martin DB5

The release of the 10262 Creator Expert James Bond Aston Martin was just as surprising in 2018 as this smaller iteration is now. A subject that no-one expected to return, but is all the more welcome for that fact – especially at a more affordable price point.

Stickers

I chose not to apply the stickers to see how good the model looked without the additional decoration. So here is the box, instructions and sticker sheet for reference. Note the many numberplate variations provided.

With the exception of the two stickers that would add the distinctive vents found on either side of most Aston Martins, I think the model itself is a good approximation of the real DB5.

Like most of the "8 wide" Speed Champions vehicles, minifigures can fit side-by-side!

Geometry of the new parts in LEGO set 76911

Windscreen 6408444 | 1874 looks to be the largest screen currently in production for Speed Champions vehicles. The rounded end matches the 6 wide round plate family. I'm hoping we see this part used again and in other colours.

The domed quarter is right at the other end of the size scale from the windscreen. It doesn't appear to have a Design ID number stamped on it.

It is part of the 1-module wide, 4-plate high curved slope family following the curvature established by parts 6191, 6192, 6215, 6091, 6081, 37352 and most recently the other corner part 67810 as pictured above top right.

The inverted slope was designed to solve a particular problem with supporting the domed quarter headlight brick - you can read more about that in our upcoming interview with LEGO Speed Champions Design Manager Christopher Stamp. As you can see it follows the geometry well established by 45° slopes and inverted slopes.

Finally, the new hubcaps are just about a millimetre smaller than a 2x2 round brick. They're slightly deeper than a plate; the central "wheel spinner" protrudes a fraction further and prevents anything sitting flat directly above it. I think these will make great air intakes on jet engines!

76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T

The Fast and Furious films have become Universal Studios' biggest grossing franchise. With over $6 billion taken at the box office following F9, I can see why LEGO have retained the license and made a new set based on Dom's Charger.

New Parts in 76912

  • 2x Plate 1 x 3 with Black wedge print in Medium Stone Gray / Light Bluish Gray (6414137 | 3623)

Recolours

  • 2x Plate 1x1x2/3 with Hole in Stud in Medium Stone Gray / Light Bluish Gray (6401023 | 86996) also in DB5
  • 12x Bracket 1x1-1x1 down in Dark Stone Grey / Dark Bluish Grey (6413106 | 36841)
  • 1x Windscreen 3 x 4 x 1 1/3 Large Glass Surface in Trans-Clear (6413108 | 57783)
  • 1x Hinge 1 x 3 Triangle with Two Pins, 1 Locking Finger in Medium Stone Gray / Light Bluish Gray (6413107 | 57359) This looks identical to the existing 47973 but as that part was only available in light bluish gray in three sets in 2004, it’s a welcome re-release.

Rare Parts

  • 1x Plate Round 1 x 1 with Open Stud and Bar on Underside - Long Space in Light Bluish Gray / Medium Stone Gray (6378136 | 79194) You also get a spare one
  • 2x Bar Holder with Clip - Medium Stone Gray / Light Bluish Gray (6355025 | 11090)

  • 1x Torso in Black, Warm Tan Arms and Hands (6431710 | 973)
  • 1x Minifig Head in Warm Tan (6414149 | 78662)
It is great to see the new skin tone again, 371 Warm Tan, having only previously been seen used in one minifigure and two minidolls.

Again I've chosen not applied the stickers. The box, instructions and sticker sheet are shown here for reference. All in all, I think the Dodge Charger has been very well realised. Some particularly impressive sub assemblies help create the blocky but deceptively easy looking shape!

Conclusion

At time of writing I have no official retail prices. I've seen it suggested that these two will be 24.99€ so I did a quick currency conversion and I think you could maybe expect to pay £21.99 and US$29.99 come August 1st. At those prices, they represent a reasonable saving over their larger counterparts. The price hike will undoubtedly be down to the double license, however I think they're worth it if you are fans of the vehicles and the franchises.

They're both very fun and engaging builds, and are excellent representations of the vehicles. They should look great on display along side your collection of other Speed Champions cars.

  1. If "nothing can tear apart family", then what good are Brick Separators? I guess that's why none are included with the F&F car...

  2. There's more new parts in that Aston Martin than I thought! That new inverted slope will be very useful I bet. A good counterpart to the 1x2 slope with cutout and no stud (28192)

By the way, you describe the new 1x2 round tile as appearing in Super Mario sets but actually so far it has only appeared in Minecraft sets.

    1. No idea why I wrote Mario! I meant Minecraft. Thank you, I will correct the post.

  3. I used to hate Speed Champions for being way too based on stickers, and when they start to do prints.. it's to cover great new parts that are just not available unprinted :(

    1. I know! Definitely need those quarter domes unprinted!

    2. I happen to own half-domes in LBG btw (from some Chinese Metal Slug set full of other great parts), and they're proper 1 brick tall, not 1+1/3

  4. 1x Plate 1x4 in Metallic Silver (6409129 | 2431) 1x Plate 1x8 in Metallic Silver (6409907 | 4162)
=> should be tiles rather than plates ;)

  5. That inverted slope will be great for filling in what often is a little open gap near the fender brick! On Speed Champions they usually do a good job of covering that area, but on regular city sets the gap seems more frequently present.

And the big (rear) windscreen on the DB5 is a welcome part. The previous 6-wide SC cars use a similar 4-wide windscreen part (often on modern super cars like the Ferrari 458 or McLaren Senna), so it's cool to see a 6-wide screen that might be used on these newer 8-wide SC cars in the future.

PS thanks for this parts review and not spoiling the build experience! I love the SC lineup for quick fun engaging builds and like to keep the experience fresh by not reading build reviews until I can get the set in hand.
