Released in 2021 as part of the LEGO® Marvel theme, 76156 Rise of the Domo retails for £89.99 / $89.99 / 99.99€. It contains 1040 pieces, giving a price-to-part value of 8.7p / 8.7c / 9.6c.

I confess I am not familiar with any of the Eternals source material, but when I first saw pictures of the set I was immediately interested in it as the main ship had such an unusual shape and some distinctive decorative pieces. Let’s take a closer look at the elements which will be of particular interest to our readers.

The following are the most uncommon elements in each of the female Eternals minifigures, all of whom have alternate face prints:

Thena

The Build

The two articulated brick-built Deviant creatures were straightforward enough to build, employing ball joints for movement, and then decorated with various bricks, plates and claw elements to make them into formidable foes. There is also a very small side build of some sort of flying craft for the Eternals to use but to be honest it did feel rather like an afterthought.

As I said in the opening section, I was most interested in the “pizza ship” and its unusual angles. The ship isn’t actually very stable until a few of the wall partitions are added - the bottom plate arrangement felt a bit flimsy before it was anchored together by these additional pieces. The two sharpest corners at the rear are achieved by using left and right door elements while the “front” angle is a bit more blunt thanks to the ladder holder. These pieces are unique in the set and newly-recoloured in Dark Bluish Gray, so it is a welcome addition to their colour options.

Once fully built, the ship is quite swooshable - although if you grab it by the rear hinging door in the wrong way, the door tends to open up (as seen in the picture above), which could be a bit of a disaster if you are mid-swoosh.

Original Builds Inspired by 76156 Rise of the Domo

I knew I wanted to keep the basic structure of the ship for my customisation project, so I will present you with side–by-side comparison images between the original and my own take on the “pizza ship”.

Pizza Slice Treasure Box

I dug deep into my DOTS and curved tiles collection to find some Bright Pink, Lavender, Medium Lavender and additional silver ink pieces, as well as a handful of extra 1x4 tiles in the lovely Satin Trans-Black colour. I wasn’t keen on having any studs showing on the lid, hence adding so many extra flourishes to the top.

In the original, there was a 2x2 round plate in Medium Nougat under the opalescent domes, but I didn’t feel they fitted very well with my new colour scheme, so I swapped them out for Dark Bluish Gray, as well as adding some quarter-round tiles to smooth off those exposed studs (and hide the hole in the middle).

I also made some significant structural changes to the interior. Having removed all of the small side builds and miscellaneous tools which were scattered about, I made sure that each of the four compartments was properly walled off from its neighnours. Luckily I had enough parts in dark green to carry on with this colour scheme inside.

I reused some of the stickered 3x3 round tiles which I had removed when I was completing the walls to each compartment, plus added some 1x1 rounds in suitable colours to fully tile the floor. My idea was to keep some quite large objects in the Treasure Box, but I didn’t want anything getting stuck on those studs on the floor or smaller things being hard to get out because of them.

As you can see from this image, the largest compartment can store four DOTS bracelets quite comfortably, while the triangular compartments at each corner will either house another couple of the bracelets or a DOTS Bag Tag cube. So the Treasure Box is perfect for keeping some DOTS-inspired jewellery in order!

Reef Life

I have a large collection of underwater plants and animals for my undersea diorama - most of which have been sitting in a box waiting for me to do something with them after the scene was packed away some months ago. While this isn’t nearly as large as the potential reef could be when I finally rebuild it, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity in this little detailed scene to use those Plant / Animal Body Part, Tree / Branch / Tail / Appendage / Tentacle (delete as appropriate!) in Satin Trans-Black as some jets coming from underwater smoke vents deep in the ocean. An unfortunate pirate calls the reef his watery grave, while various fish and a Ray swim around among the coral.

These smokey pieces look so good when you catch the light on them in just the right direction.

Conclusion

76156 Rise of the Domo will offer plenty of opportunities to the target audience of 8+ LEGO fans, as they role play the Eternals heroes fighting their Deviant enemies. It feels a bit expensive for what you get, but no doubt part of that high price will be the obligatory Disney Tax for using the Marvel IP.

It offers AFOLs some interesting elements to use for their own MOCs, some of which can only be found in this set to date, as well as a couple of unique minifigures. 1. Great review as always!
I've passed by this one on store shelves several times while running errands, and haven't gotten it since, as you note, the price is rather steep. On the other hand, the exclusive bits have a lot of appeal -- even the printed ones seem very versatile, with the 8x8 round plates bearing an aesthetic that reminds me a lot of some of the console pieces from set 21304 -- and of course those Transparent Brown w/ Opalescence parts are beautiful! The underwater scene MOC is a great showcase.

Ultimately I think I will settle for set 76155 which I already bought for the Transparent Brown w/ Opalescence parts. Hopefully the Dark Stone Grey ladder holder and Bright Red droid torso will show up again (in quantity perhaps? please, LEGO?) elsewhere.

  2. I'm waiting for Doctor Who MOC's to show up using the 8x8 dish things with circle printing as it seems to scream "Time Lord language". Maybe a huge TARDIS console with walls?

Great work on the Reef, BTW!
