So, today I’m doing something a bit different. I first built 76199 Carnage for a review on Rebrickable.com, but when I found out how many interesting elements there are to be found here, I decided to write this additional piece for New Elementary.

Minifig shown for scale!

Carnage is a symbiote originating from the Marvel Comics, and is one of the most murderous villains Spider-Man encounters. He is from the same species as Venom, but while Venom ultimately turned good(ish), Carnage is hosted by a serial killer.  Carnage is making his first movie appearance in the upcoming sequel to the Venom movie, set to be released in September 2021.

The parts

As to be expected, there are a lot of red and black elements to be found, however I was surprised by the quantity of pink bricks, which make up the inside of the mouth.

There are no new moulds, but this set is a treasure-trove in terms of recolours! We start with Light Purple/ Bright Pink:

  • 6x Brick Special 1 x 4 with 4 Studs on One Side (6351893 | 30414)
  • 1x Wedge Plate 3 x 6 Cut Corners (6353259 | 2419)
  • 2x Slope Curved 4 x 1 Inverted (6351891 | 13547)
  • 4x Wedge Plate 2 x 2 Cut Corner (6351894 | 26601)

New in Bright Purple/ Dark Pink are:

  • 4x Plate Special 1 x 2 [Top Clip] (6334476 | 92280). I was surprised to see that the older mould was used for this part. The 44861 version with Open O clip was introduced in 2020, but the old version stills pops up in sets.
  • 1x Tile Special 2 x 2 with only 2 studs (6293401 | 33909)

Also new is the Tile 45° Cut 2 x 2 in Bright Red/ Red (6351892 | 35787). We get 4 of these in this set. And the final recolour is the Flag 5 x 6 Hexagonal with U Clips in Black (6334515 | 17979), of which there is only 1.

Unfortunately, all black decorations on the head are stickers.

The only printed part in the set is the little sign on the stand: Tile Special 4 x 6 with Studs on Edges and LEGO MARVEL CARNAGE Print in Black (6336896).

There are some rare parts worth a mention.

Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Right in Red (6351897 | 41749) and  Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 Open Left in Red (6351898 | 41750) make a comeback after last being seen in 2009. Unfortunately, there are only 1 of each in this set.

Wedge 2 x 2 Facet in Bright Pink (6204509 | 87620) has been in 3 sets before. Slope Curved 2 x 1 Inverted in Bright Pink (6296041 | 24201) has only been found in the 2020 Monkie Kid set 80009 Pigsy’s Food Truck before.

The build

I’m keeping the build section of this review short. For a full build analysis, I can direct you to my full 76199 Carnage review on Rebrickable.

The stand is a simple build, with the yellow Technic beams giving extra strength.

The head consists mostly of a large cube with SNOT bricks sticking out. All of the detailing will be attached to the SNOT bricks.

The top and back of the head are built in separate sections and attached to the main build. You do have to be careful attaching the back section. Applying pressure on the wrong area will make it cave in.

Next up are the eyes and upper jaw.

The forehead is attached using minifig shields before the sides are finished off.

Lastly, the lower jaw is added. It’s made out of 2 sections that attach in the middle once placed on the head. This calls for some force, while also being gentle.

Conclusion

I’m a bit torn on this one. There are some interesting building techniques to be found, like the attachment of the lower jaw and forehead, but the majority is just standard brick-on-brick building. There are some tricky steps requiring a gentle touch, so for the first time while building an 18+ set, I can say it might not be suited for inexperienced children.

In terms of design, all I can say: it looks nice. Not being a particular fan of the comics, this will not be a set I would buy myself. But I suppose that a fan of Carnage, Venom or Spider-Man in general will like to have this model on display.

From a parts perspective, this set has a lot to offer. There are many recolours, and overall there is a nice selection of elements, especially in the red section.

  1. Ooh some stuff in here I've been waiting a while for. The triange tile and the return of Wedge Curved 8 x 3 x 2 in red especially.

  2. Oh wow, those are definitely some interesting parts! The pink parts especially intrigue me since I've noticed that things like wedge plates tend to be fairly rare in pink colors (probably in part because angular parts like those are not often used for the more rounded, bubbly aesthetic of the Friends theme). And of course, the 2x2 triangle tile in a basic color like red could be hugely useful!

I wonder how many of these parts are shared with the very similar build of the Venom bust, and whether that one has any other interesting recolors hidden away.

  3. Man that minifig shield has gotten a workout this year!

  4. When I first saw this set, I was keen. But as I'm starting to see reviews of it I'm less excited. It looked so cool in the early shots but the reality shots are just not delivering. Not helped by you saying it only looks "nice". Lol
