10260 Downtown Diner: New parts and colours

Posted by Admin
After our Tealicious appetiser looking at all the Teal parts in LEGO® Creator Expert 10260 Downtown Diner, your main course of new parts is now on the menu. So slip into a comfortable position in that little red diner stool because your waitress Elspeth De Montes is scooting towards your table to serve up new LEGO elements.

Now before we start, I know we don’t normally focus much on minifigures here at New Elementary but in the case of Downtown Diner I must make an exception. There’s no easy way to say this so I’m just going to get it off my chest - the boxer in this set has the most ridiculously bouffant hairstyle I have ever seen in a boxing ring. Can you pick out the boxer’s hairstyle? Hint: I can only assume that Jamie Berard must have won a bet for using this hairstyle on a bloke!

New LEGO plant pieces in 10260 Downtown Diner

There is a new plant stem introduced in 2018, namely the Green Plant Flower Stem with Bottom Pin (Element ID 6135278 | Design ID 24855), shown on the right in the image below. This element is similar in appearance to the classic Green Plant Flower Stem (Design ID 3741) on the left, but in fact it is a completely new mould.

The new plant stem has a 3.18mm shaft that opens into the three stalks, one slightly longer than the others. In addition, the top of the stem has a has a hole that will accommodate any 3.18mm bar/shaft that makes stacking these stems much more secure than the older plant stem.

Like the Plant Flower Stem with Bar (Design ID 99249) from the CMFs, the bar makes it easier for your minifigures to hold the plant stem as it can be held directly in their hand rather than using the top of the hand as a loose stud connection as you would with the classic plant stem…well, unless you are wearing boxing gloves of course.

(Yes, the answer to our hairstyle quiz really is number 6.)

There are three different colours of the new flower element, Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Flower Edge (5 Petals) (Design ID 24866) supplied with this set: Light Royal Blue [TLG]/ Bright Light Blue [BL] (Element ID 6209683), Flame Yellowish Orange [TLG]/ Bright Light Orange [BL] (Element ID 6209681) and Bright Orange [TLG]/ Orange [BL] (Element ID 6214234). It’s nice to receive a selection of colours of a new part all in one set.

There are also two of the Bright Green Plant Plate, Round 1 x 1 with 3 Leaves (Element ID 6182261 | Design ID 32607) supplied. Chris McVeigh looked at these elements already so I won’t go into detail here.

Red pieces in 10260 Downtown Diner

In the Bright Red [TLG]/ Red [BL] corner, we have three new elements.

There is one new Tile 2 x 2 with 'Rock & Roll' Pattern (Element ID 6216088) that is used as a decoration on the wall of the musician’s recording studio on the second floor of the building. There is also one Tile 6 x 6 with Bottom Tubes (Element ID 6192007 | Design ID 10202) and three Tile, Round 1 x 1 with Bar and Pin Holder a.k.a the ’nipple’ (Element ID 6215539 | Design ID 20482).

The Tile 6x6 is used as the main floor area within the boxing ring located within the first floor gym however the ring’s red floor becomes 7x7 in size with the addition of a few more tiles.

The Red ‘nipple’ parts are used in two rather contrasting ways. The first is to connect the top of the gumball machine to its base.  Using this part allows the headlight brick to be placed with its front facing downwards, with the pin inserted into its hole - a simple solution, and all in red.

The other two ‘nipples’ are used in a clever but entirely hidden way and so any colour could have been used for this purpose. In the kitchen, they are used to attach the two Medium Stone Grey [TLG] / Light Bluish Gray [BL] Truck Body 5X4,5X1 1/3 (Element ID 4520296 | Design ID 2512) upside down to create the hood of the stove. The two Black jumper plates provide the necessary holes for the connection.

The curved surface of the top of the hood is then completed using another element new to Light Bluish Gray: Slope, Curved 2 x 2 Inverted (Element ID 6185676 | Design ID 32803) which previously appeared in 70922 Joker Manor.

Pink pieces in 10260 Downtown Diner

There are five new Light Purple [TLG] / Bright Pink [BL] elements in this set, three of which belong to the snazzy pink Cadillac.

The first is the Plate, Modified 1 x 3 with 2 Studs (Element ID 6217796 | Design ID 34103), and two are supplied. This element actually made its mould debut back in 2017 in 70620 Ninjago City but this is a first appearance in Bright Pink. The part is used in this set to ensure that the tan head rests for the driver and passenger seats sit centrally within the Cadillac.

There are eight Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Pin Hole on Top (Element ID 6213791 | Design ID 11458) used to create the curves on the hood that lead down to the headlights on either side.

The last new Cadillac element is one Wedge 4 x 4 x 2/3 Triple Curved (Element ID 6214084 | Design ID 45677) positioned as the central portion of the hood.

Two of Tile, Round Corner 4 x 4 Macaroni Wide (Element ID 6213874 | Design ID 27507) are used to give a hint of pink behind the Bright Bluish Green [TLG]/ Dark Turquoise [BL] decorative feature at the front of the diner.

Finally for this colour, Round Corner 4 x 4  (Element ID 6213793 | Design ID 30565) is also used to add the pink highlight into the structure but this time at the curved edge of the diner’s ground floor roof.

Now to Bright Purple [TLG] / Dark Pink [BL]. The use of this darker shade of pink is a perfect contrast with Dark Turquoise and there are four elements appearing for the first time, all of which form part of the awesome ‘Diner’ lettering.

  • One of Arch 1 x 6 x 2 Curved Top (Element ID 6221720 | Design ID 6183
  • One of Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Stud on 1 Side (Element ID 6217793 | Design ID 87087
  • Seven of Plate 1 x 1 (Element ID 6217797 | Design ID 3024
  • One of Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove and Bottom Stud Holder (Jumper) (Element ID  6217794 | Design ID 15573
These new parts can all be spotted somewhere within the letters but to make it easier, breaking the D helps.  The first three all form part of the D at least although the 1x1 plates are in D, I, N and E, while the 1x2 jumper plate used only in the ‘E’. This is some fun lettering and suits the 1950s Diner feel with a bit of Art Deco flair.

Tan pieces in 10260 Downtown Diner

The facade of the diner uses a Brick Yellow [TLG] / Tan [BL] recolour of a part that has mainly been used within the Brickheadz theme: Brick, Modified 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 with Studs on 1 Side (Element ID 6214334  | Design ID 22885). We have already had this brick in Light Bluish Gray, Red and Bright Purple [TLG] / Dark Pink [BL].

These elements form the structure of the facade of the first and second floors of the diner, which house the gym and recording studio respectively.  Plates with a pattern of 1x1 and 1x2 Tan tiles are then placed onto the studded walls to give the appearance of stone brickwork.

Phew. That was an epic main course, but do come back for dessert when we look at interesting techniques.

    1. Ahhhh thanks. You are correct and that’s my error for missing that detail. Thanks for pointing it out! At least it’s the FIRST time it’s been used as the floor of a boxing ring!!

  3. The boxer actually reminds me of two actors. One, I can't place at the moment, but the other is whoever plays Detective Riggs on the Lethal Weapon TV series currently running on Fox.

  4. Well I've just been told that it was not Jamie Berard's boxer but actually Mike Psaki's build and idea. Mike's hair can be bouffant at times so maybe it's a sig fig!

  6. No, it’s Naveen Andrews from sense8

  7. Another couple of minor nitpicks, the nipple piece debuted in red in 75529 Elite Praetorian Guard last year, and the double jumper plate made its mould debut in 76087 Flying Fox which came out one month before Ninjago City.

    2. Thanks for the extra details Jens. I always like to leave a few inconsistencies in my writing!

  9. What's the brown piece used at the bottom of the Diner lettering?

    1. It's the "Brick, Modified 1 x 1 x 1 2/3 with Studs on 1 Side". Essentially a 5 plates tall brick with a 1x1 base and 2 studs on one side. It's the half wide equivalent part of the BrickHeads SNOT bricks they use for the head.
